Pulverturm an der Frauenkirche: Dining with an old cannon

by globetrott

Pulverturm an der Frauenkirche is another garden-restaurant I tried once for lunch, as this garden is a lot more informal than Coselpalais, although they are inside the same building. The restaurant inside looks also great with old vaults, and they have different small rooms - see their webpage below !But on a hot summerday it is great to sit outside under the umbrella and dine with a cannon...There stood once an old powder-tower (Pulverturm) that was taken away in order to be able to build Coselpalais. The cannon shown on my picture is a replica of a cannon used by saxons in 1686 with a calibre of 24 pounds and a pipe-length of 2,46meters.The diameter of the muzzle is 15,1 cmThe Saxon army had 72 of such cannons ! I had a salad with fillet of turkey, I do not remember the price, but it was about average for Dresden and a lot cheaper than Coselpalais in the same building.

Tennera: Great beergarden!

by elbe

After visiting the „Kletterpark“ for example the restaurant with huge beergarden „Brauereiausschank Tennera“ close to the “Stadtpark” is a nice place to rest. Outside you have to get yourself the drinks at the bar. There you can also order food. It’s wonderful to sit outside if the weather is good. Tennera is surrounded by wood so you can go for al walk before or after visiting it. Open every day form 11 a.m. The food is more good plain cooking, very good and you get big portions. I can recommend the turkey salad which is very nice.

Fummel and Saxon Wines

by tini58de

The Fummel is some kind of cake - for a precise description please have a look at my Meissen page! The Saxon Wine is delicious - don't miss to try it!!! Try or buy some – whether Goldriesling, Rulaender or Scheurebe - during an entertaining wine-tasting or just in one of the supermarkets on the way!.

Konditorei Kreutzkamm: Home of the Dresdener Stollen

by globetrott

Konditorei Kreutzkamm dates back to the year 1825 and has also a branch in Munich close to Marienplatz. They are mainly famous for their Weihnachtsstollen (Christmas fruit loaf), Gingerbread and other specialities that are also shipped worldwide. Weihnachtsstollen is a traditional fruit loaf that was kept like a treasure in the families of the old DDR.It needs some time to rest, before you may eat it.In Munich I had sometimes been in Konditorei Kreutzkamm for their famous Baumkuchen - in Dresden you certainly have to try the famous Stollen and maybe a hot chocolate !!

Biergarten: Great food for a cheap price

by globetrott

On Postplatz, just about 200 meters from Zwinger and Taschbergpalais you may find a really cheap, but nice beergarden and I may highly recommend this place for travellers, who have to calculate and travel on a budget. The building on my picture is a combination of a shop & supermarket , beeing open daily 06.00a.m. - 09.00p.m. and Sat&sunday : 09.00a.m.-08.00p.m. Prices are cheap in the shop, they have a bakery and you may drink coffee there as well.Around the building is a cheap beergarden and also a stand selling half a roasted chicken to take away for just 2 €uros. In the area you will find lots of benches, where you may eat... When-ever I travel in great sunshine I do not care a lot for great service and special food in a fancy restaurant, I rather spend my time in a museum or searching for great architecture...Then I buy some buttermilk in the shop and maybe a roll and get me a...

Kempinski - Restaurant Intermezzo: Taschenbergpalais in Dresden

by globetrott

Taschenbergpalais was once built by August the strong for his mistress countess Cosel in the very centre of Dresden, opposite of the Zwinger and next to the Schloss. The architect was Pöppelmann (he also built the famous Zwinger and Schloss Pillnitz)This building was completely destroyed in 1945 and was finally restored and finished in 1995 and is a Kempinski - hotel today. This is not really my kind of place to have coffee and cake in the afternoon, although I prefer having my afternoon-coffee surrounded by great architecture........this is a place for people of the Jet-Set who arrive in a limousine and may throw around tips to everyone they meet...

Coselpalais Grandcafe & Restaurant: Dining in an old Palais

by globetrott

When walking through Dresden you will see plenty of great old Palais and many of them are used today for concerts and restaurants.Palais Cosel dates back to 1744, but it was destroyed and rebuilt again in 1760 by Carl Friedrich August von Cosel ( son of August the strong and countess Cosel, who was held in prison for 49 years in castle Stolpen). The fully restored building of today is mainly used for bureaus, but the Coselpalais Grandcafe&restaurant has a really beautiful garden-restaurant in the innercourt, a lovely foyer and a big hall used for special festivities . I spent several days in Dresden in summer 2004 and so I had some coffee and cake there one day, as for dinner and lunch prices are higher than normally and as a single traveller it is always hard to get a table for my own in a place like this. They have a big menu of fine specialities !Coselpalais Grandcafe & Restaurant is...

Wettiner Keller: Great dining on Brühlsche Terrasse

by globetrott

Brühlsche Terrasse in Dresden is the wide boulevard high above the river Elbe, where deep below all of the steamships are docked. This boulevard starts next to the Schloß and ends at the Academy . It is maybe 12 meters wide and includes trees, benches and garden-cafes and -restaurants.My favorite was Wettiner Keller, maybe simply because of the great building you may see on my picture, but once that you have some icecream on a hot summerday, you might return for more again and again. It was a hot summerday in july 2004 and I had a delicious icecream-cup with fruits and liquor. This garden-restaurant is part of the Dresden-Hilton and a really nice place to relax !NO need to dress up formally !!

Prinzenkeller in Schloss Albrechtsberg: Dining like Prince Albrecht

by globetrott

Schloss Albrechtsberg - the name comes from Prince Albrecht, brother of the prussian Kaiser Wilhelm I.He had this castle built in late classic-style between 1851 and 1854 by Adolph Lohse / a student of Schinkel. The castle park is open to the public and a part of the castle is used as a restaurant, mainly for special events and festivities I had a cake and espresso there in summer 2004 and it was nice to see, that there is a HOGA - Hotelfachschule and the students of this hotelschool served in kitchen and service.Opening times of Prinzenkeller areMonday+Tuesday: 8.30a.m. - 02.30p.m. Wednesday-Friday: 8.30a.m. -midnightSaturday+Sunday: 11.00a.m. - midnight
