Der Knast in Dresden: a strange place for strange people

by globetrott

Der Knast / the prison is a place that I saw, when walking to the Pf...Molkerei in Bautzener Strasse. The outfit of the place sprang into my eyes and so I decided to go there with Andrey and Ingo the other day......BUT Ingo told me, that this place is getting quite rought later in the night, with strange people in leather clothings etc.You may have a look inside the window and see that all the tables are surrounded by iron-fences.On my picture-combination you may also see the entrance-door. They open at 05.00p.m. and close again at 02.00a.m.It might be OK to have a beer there in the early afternoon, at 05.30 I just saw 2 people sitting inside. It might be best to avoid the rough people who get there later !!Prices of a beer are around 2,70 € for a half litre.

Pf... Molkerei: The most beautiful dairy in the world

by globetrott

Pf. Molkerei dates back to the year 1892 and all of the walls are covered by beautiful tiles.Last summer I saw in a brochure this lovely dairy, where you may also sit in this side-room and enjoy some Buttermilk and cheese, and so I booked a tourbus, that would stop there in order to take a picture and taste some of their food and have a buttermilk....I entered the shop and in that very moment the lady at the counter started to scream NO Photographs !!!I simply turned around and gave up my plans to buy anything there and had some coffee somewhere else...I did not disturb anyone BUT had the feeling, that lots of customers in the shop were rather disturbed by that sceaming lady than by my camera. In December 2004 I returned shortly before 06.00p.m. and took my pictures legally from OUTside of the shop. And I also got the legal advice by a VT-friend : as long as you make a picture of a place...

The Cafe in Italian Village in Dresden: Dining in great atmosphere

by globetrott

"The Italian Village" - the riverside next to Semperoper - was once the area ,where the workers from Italy used to have their small huts , while working as sculpturers, masons or painters at one of the many churches and buildings, that tourists of today will admire, when coming to Dresden.Today these huts do not exist anymore, instead there is another great building with various different restaurants inside. I had Handkäse - a stinky cheese, pickeled in spices and herbs and served with salads, bread and butter. As a drink I had a "Duckstein" - beer, a speciality of the Holsten brewery. That beer is almost red and tasted really great.Prices are a bit higher than normally in Dresden, BUT still a lot cheaper than in places like Munich or Köln.

Moritzburg Schlossrestaurant: Dining like August der Starke

by globetrott

Inside the castle Moritzburg there is a nice restaurant as well and some of the rooms of the castle may even be used for festivities like weddings etc.Already in the entrance-hall of the castle you may see the menu and decide for yourself, what to eat or drink. This restaurant has a rather big menu with great local and international cuisine.Prices are maybe a bit higher than outside of the castle, but you also get a very special atmosphere in the vaults of the castle.

The Orangerie in Bad Muskau: Try Fürst Pücklers Icecream

by globetrott

The Orangerie of the castle Bad Muskau was once used to grow topical plants and to protect them against the strong winters in Germany.Today it is a great restauant, with a lovely garden-terrace, and certainly a prefect place to relax after a long hike through the parks of Bad Muskau. When you are in Bad Muskau, you really should try one of the local specialities that was once created for Fürst Pückler :Fuerst Pueckler Ice-cream is an icecream-cake with 3 flavors of ice :1 layer of strawberry-icecream1 layer of chocolat-icecream1 layer of vanilla-icecream

Pirna Brauhaus: went for beer, but food was even better....

by richiecdisc

This is an upscale brewpub, with an uptempo bar area and more cozy and quaint dinning areas. It's quite large and popular with locals and seems a great place for special occasion parties like birthdays. I'll admit I went primarily as it was one of the few brewpubs in Saxony but I was more impressed with the food than the beer. Though both the Pils and Dunkles were nice enough intepretations of their styles, they were not overly tasty and were overshadowed by the food. The krautfeish was only 7.95 Euros and was a massive portion of meat with sauer kraut and the putten steak was a turkey steak smothered in mushrooms over noodles (9.44 Euros). Small beers were 1.50 and they had a specialty beer called Schlaffmusszchen for 1.80. It was an interesting idea for a German beer, being a spiced Christmas brew, but it was too low in alcohol for the style, and a bit thin on flavor.

Doreen's parent's place: can't beat home-made

by richiecdisc

I'm sure that Dippoldiswalde has great places to eat but I must admit I never tried any. We ate at Doreen's Mom's house most of the time and can't imagine any food better. I loved trying all the home-made local specialties and it being a working farm, the meat was often freshly slaughtered. My favorite was when they had just butchered a sheep and it was ground up and mixed with garlic and other spices. This raw spread is called hackepeter and is served with fresh bread and though it sounds strange, it was perhaps my favorite meal on the entire trip.

Pfeffersack: Medieval ambience...

by richiecdisc

This place looked super touristy from the outside and I imagine in season, it might be. But with windchills hovering around zero degrees and in need of some warmth, we ducked in and found a lovely candle-lit place with classical music playing. Goethe even drank here. We just had some soup but Doreen says the lentil soup (4.50 Euros) was great and my garlic one (3.10 Euros) was not bad either. Though I was disappointed that the did not have Freiberger Dunkle on tap, I was pleasantly surprised to find a beer I had never even heard of. It was flavored with fennel, and even garnished with some seeds as well. It was a find at 3.25 Euros a half liter.
