Here's another of those picturesque villages in the surroundings of Schirgiswalde, located in a lovely green valley, with a population of about 1'700. It's practically unspoilt, dotted with typical Umgebinde houses all over, with beautiful flower gardens, little cobbled alleys.Wehrsdorf has a beautiful Baroque parish church, built 1725 and nicely...more
About 8'000 people live in the 15 fractions of this small town right on the border to the Czech Republic. It's the right next to Schirgiswalde, spread out from the Spree river valley over several smaller, wide and lovely side valleys. The centre (pic 1) is in Sohland proper, with a nice classicistic parish church from 1824 (pic 2), the hut and...more
This hotel is an outstanding spa resort. The history of the place goes back a long time, even in the communist era the hotel and restaurant "Zum Weber" had an excellent reputation. After the iron curtain fell it soon closed for seven years until finally someone with money had mercy and bought it: The Schumann family turned it into a luxury spa...more
About 2 km from Schirgiswalde, in a horseshoe bend of the Spree river, are the relics of the castle Körse. It was built after the year 1200 on the grounds of a previous Sorbian fortified place, but was destroyed the troops of the six-town league (Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau etc.) in the middle of the 14th century. It had massive walls that enclosed a...more
The parish church in neighbouring Kirschau (since 1 January 2011 part of the municipaility Schirgiswalde-Kirschau) has a remarkable architecture: It was built on a circular ground plan, the large dome is a landmark, visible from afar (pic 1). Arthur Bohlig designed the church in the early 1920s. A set of steps with lanterns leads up to the...more
This church - with full name: Catholic parish church ad assumptionem Beatae Mariae Virginis - is the landmark of Schirgiswalde. It is located on a hill above the centre of the small town, a flight of steps leading up, its two steeples visible from all over the valley. The church was built 1739-41 by Zacharias Hoffmann from nearby Hainspach (Northern...more

The old Erbgericht in Wehrsdorf was turned into the four-star Residenz Hotel TRÜGGELMANN in the late 1990s, but the charm remained. Sure, it's a bit upscale, and people wonder how such a nice hotel and restaurant in the small village survives, but since prices are still reasonable for what they offer it does work out. I was there several times,...more
Right in the centre of Schirgiswalde, on the Markt square and by the Spree river, is the bakery and cafe Kloßmühle, which is run by the same family in the fourth generation (with the exception of a few years during the communist era.) The building looks new, and it dates in fact from 1999, but a nice wooden ceiling was transfered from the previous...more
Who would have thought there is a nice mountain hut in the puny Upper Lausitz hills? LOL I discovered this gem when I went cross-country skiiing in Sohland, the small town up the Spree valley from Schirgiswalde, right on the border to the Czech Republic. The hut, with a viewing tower, is located on a nameless "mountain", at an elevation of almost...more
A few km up the valley from Schirgiswalde is a lake in the outskirts of the small town Sohland. It is a very popular place for recreation, with rental boats, playground for kids etc. Right by the lake is this restaurant, another one (a beergarden) is a few metres from the lake.I had meals here a couple of times and always enjoyed them. Whether for...more
On a cycling trip through the Upper Lausitz hills we got hungry. We could not find a decent restaurant near the cycling trail down by the river in Schirgiswalde, but finally came by this restaurant just a few hundred meters in direction Weifa. The restaurant (and hotel) is in a nice old house, the interior is beautiful, very pleasant ambience in...more
This outstanding spa resort has several restaurants, most of them are open in the evening only, though. Their restaurant that is open all day is named "Kirschlaube". I've been there twice, but took pictures only on a family outing for cake and coffee/tea.For lunch we had some of their so called 'health food', the vegetarian option: pasta made of...more
Tired of overpriced meat that's full of chemicals and cheap filling stuff on top of that? Buy at Fleischerei Mildner in Schirgiswalde! Their shop is right on the Markt square, by the pedestrian light. Although they do not qualify for the official 'organic' label - I guess they avoid the high administrative cost - they only use best quality meat, buy from local farmers, butcher themselves. They use no chemical preservative, no flavour enhancer etc. - and very little salt. You will taste the difference.
On pic 2 you see that they also offer lunch meals. Usually three choices daily Mon - Fri, between 3.20 Euro for a vegetarian option and 3.90 Euro for meat. Okay, chicken with potatoes and red cabbage is 4.50 Euro ...
What to buy: All sorts of meat, cold cuts, ham, sausages. My favourites are "Polnische", "Nussschinken", "Rindsknacker", "Hausmacher Leberwurst" ...
What to pay: Example:
100 g Hausmacher Leberwurst 0.88 Euro
100 g Polnische 1.20 Euro
Schirgiswalde must have the most unusual - and beautiful - signposts for significant buildings, places of interest etc. You find them all over the small town. They are woodcarved, painted figures from town, depicting - sort of - either the sponsor of the signpost (in a funny way) or depicting the place of interest it shows directions to.
The sponsor is mentioned on a plaque right below the signpost, sometimes the inscription is not readable anymore - too bad.
The region around Schirgiswalde is probably too hilly to be a cycler's paradise, but with some planning and using public transportation you can do lots of cycling trips. The most popular of the trails is most likely the Spree cycling trail. It runs from the river head(s) of the Spree river (there are three, I recommend the one in Neugersdorf) along...more
The skilift in neighbouring Wehrsdorf is even smaller than in Sohland. It is recommended for beginners or really low intermediates for just an hour or two of fun only. Elevation is 370 - 420 m, length is 300 m. Due to the north-facing slope it is quite snow reliable.Getting there is a bit tricky. You must take one of the tiny alleys in the village...more
There is a skilift in Sohland if you want to do downhill skiing. Don't expect too much, though. Elevation difference is about 80 m I think, the lenght is 350 m. There are two pistes, one for total newbies (blue) and one for intermediates (red). At the foot of the hill by the skilift is a snack bar and sort of apres-ski place. Basic snacks, a...more
