Ratags Kunsthandwerkerhaus: always Christmas (and Easter)

by vtveen

Once you have reached these 'art and handicraft' shops, you step into another world. Doesn't matter what period of the year, you always have the impression Christmas is coming. It is almost unbelievable so many Christmas decorations are in these shops. You name it and you will find it. it seems they are famous for their so called 'Schwib-Arches'. In another building you can watch employees manufactering these decorations and artistic painting too. There is also an Easter shop, but for us far less impressive. 900.000 items !!!!! from 1 euro till ......................

Christmas: go inside
Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen: porcelain: buy it in Meissen

by vtveen

When visiting Meissen in Saxony, it is almost a must to take a look in the famous Meissen porcelain factory.About 300 years ago the first European porcelain factory was founded at Albrechtburg Castle in Meissen. And till nowadays they are making masterpieces in 'white gold'. Meissen Porcelain from a thimble, through regular stuff like cups and plates till artistic pieces of porcelain. Depends of what you want to buy, but it is better to bring your credit card.

beautiful, but .........
Dresden - 'Pfund's dairy'

by vtveen

They call themselves "the most beautiful dairy in the world". Although I didn't see all the dairies of these world, I think this shop is hard to beat.Never seen a shop interior with such fantastic tile paintings. And tiles you will find everywhere: on the wall, ceiling, floor and shop counter !!!The shop was founded by two Pfund brothers in 1880. milk, butter and cheese

Pfund's: not a common dairy
Euro-Spät-Kauf in Dredsen: Every day Shopping for food

by globetrott

Euro-Spät-Kauf is a supermarket in Postplatz in Dresden and the best about it is the fact that it is open also on sundays and holidays and opens already rather early in the morning !Prices are maybe 5% higher than in other supermarkets, but that is not really bad, when you considder that travellers pay a lot more at the trainstations.mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmmThe shop is open :Monday - Friday : 06.00a.m. - 09.00p.m.Saturday: 08.00a.m. - 08.00p.m.Sunday: 09.00a.m. - 08.00p.m. You may get everything there like in any supermarket AND they also have a small bakery there with fresh cakes and rolls and they serve coffee !In the same building you have a Kebap-stand, a beergarden around the corner and a stand with roasted chicken to take away.THIS is certainly a perfect place for tourists on a budget !! Half a roasted chicken is just 2 €uros to take away, half a litre Buttermilk is about 1...

Weihnachtspyramiden aus dem Erzgebirge

by globetrott

On my picture you may see a typical kind of "Weihnachtspyramide" that will mostly follow a very simple technique :Lots of candles that are lighted around the pyramid will have a lot of hot air streaming up to the wind-wheel on top and this windwheel will turn around the small figures in circles around the axle in the centre of the X-mas-pyramid.b.t.w. the pyramid shown on my picture is with a height of about 7 meters the biggest one I have ever seen and it is shown inside the new townhall of Dresden. It is lighted by electricity and also the figures are moved by electricity... Such pyramids in much smaller size make a perfect souvenir from Saxony and are equally liked by children and elderly people, who might even still remember to have seen such people, working-tools and costumes in their own childhood... The price will depend on size and quality

Cafe Zieger in Meissen: Get a Fummel in Meissen

by globetrott

Only in Meissen you may buy a funny traditional pastry, called FUMMEL and this kind of pastry has an interesting story behind it:August der Starke had a post-rider, who was drinking quite a lot, and in order to control him , he asked the bakeries in Meissen to create a very thin pastry that might easily break, when it is not carried carefully...You may still buy this pastry ONLY in Konditorei Zieger for about 2 Euros, it is big like a loaf of bread, but very light and really thin ( & it survived several days in my car)Have a look on my picture-combination - the one on the left was digitally made smaller and I could not restist to make a hole in order to see how thin it is...It is a funny souvenir, BUT I would NOT recommend it for a great taste , it actually tastes like nothing !In colloquial german a Fummel is a kind of dress for ladies that is expensive and rather thin, and might be...

Knusperflocken

by tini58de

"Knusperflocken" are something very special! They were invented in the GDR and consist of whole milk chocolate with crisp bread cumbs and rusks! You cannot buy this kind of sweets in the western part of the country, so look out for Knusperflocken while in Saxony!

local shops: buy local products

by richiecdisc

The towns of the Erzgebirge all have shops selling local handcrafts. This area is renowned for its wooden Christmas figures. There is a trend towards cheap foreign versions of these products and though the prices are lower, so is the quality. If you have the money, buy the locally produced ones. It helps the local economy and keeps traditions alive too. Nutcacker men and pyramids are two of the more popular items to buy in the Erzgebirge. A small but nice pyramid cost around $50 and the nutcrackers can be as little as $7 for a very small one but expect to pay about $30 for something of fair size and quality.
