    Market Square

by Leipzig Updated Sep 22, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The market square in front of the town hall is the lively centre of the town. To the left and right are several cafés with seats outside where you can watch the scene on the square and people passing by.
The domestic houses at the square give you an impression of the wealth of the town in the past centuries.

    Town Hall

by Leipzig Updated Sep 22, 2004

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The town hall is perhaps the most beautiful building in the city. It remembers on a little Italian castle, doesn't it? The building was erected between 1840 - 1844 and contains a beautiful hall with rich stained glass windows.

The Market Square is the "heart" of Zittau. It is surrounded by a number of magnificent Patrician houses:

the former inn "Gasthof Zur Sonne" (1710),
the "duke's hotel" in Rokoko style (1767),
Noack's house, one of the most beautiful Baroque houses (1689),
Dornspach's house, from 1553 with a nice arcaded patio

to name just a few. At the east side you find the impressive town hall (see next tip).

    Green well

    by german_eagle Updated Oct 24, 2003

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Zittau has a number of beautiful wells. One of them is the Green Well, originally to find in front of the town hall, now in front of the city museum.

When the town was damaged by an earthquake in 1856 the well dried up. In 1922 it was moved to its new location.

The "Green Well" is a work of smith Michael Fröhlich from 1679.

The Johanneum is the town's gymnasium and was built from 1868-71. It features a 56 m high tower which has a golden baroque angel on top. This angel was originally an ornament of the Weber gate.

On the western side of the Market square you find a lovely fountain. It is called Roland- or Mars- Fountain.

The fountain is an excellent work of art of local sculptor Matthias Zimmermann from 1585.
