Wörlitz Things to Do

  • The Golden Urn

The golden urn by the canal is indeed a grave. The baby daughter of Leopold Friedrich Franz and Louise died during birth before she could be baptized. Thus she could not be buried in a Christian cemetery. Her mortal remains rest in the golden urn in the park.

  • Gotisches Haus - the Gothic House

English neo-gothic architecture found an early continental successor in Wörlitz. The Gothic House was begun in 1773 and completed in 1813 after plans by the court architects Georg Christoph Hesekiel and Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff. Its model was Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill but the main front towards the canal includes a copy of a...

  • Bridges

All bridges, and there are many of them in the park, are different. They are supposed to be a collection of architectural styles and techniques throughout the history of bridge construction. There is a Chinese bridge, a one-tree bridge, bridges built from stone or wood or steel. Keep your eyes open for them. The most famous of them all is the...

  • The Synagogue

A true representant of the Age of Enlightenment, Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz's aim was tolerance and freedom of faith. Not far from church and palace, he had a synagogue built for the Jews of Wörlitz and Oranienbaum. The round temple on the shore of the lake was designed by court architect Erdmannsdorf after an antique model, the temple of...

  • The Church of St Peter

The spire of the church, the highest building around the park, is a landmark and visible from many places. The church's roots date back to around 1200. Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz had it redesigned and redecorated in 1804 - 1809. Again he followed English models and selected the neo-gothic style. This is a very early example of a neo-gothic...

  • The "Stone": Miniature Gulf of Naples

The ensemble at the end of the lake, named Stein (stone), sums up the Prince's experiences on a journey to Italy. The small island was turned into a miniature Gulf of Naples. Huge rocks were used to build the substructions and grottos. These carry a little volcano that recalls Vesuvius. Volcanic "eruptions" were performed with fireworks (photo...

  • Schloss - the Palace

Wörlitz palace (I refuse to call this a "castle") was the first palace in neoclassical style outside England. It was erected in 1769 - 1773 for the newly-married Prince and Princess of Anhalt-Dessau by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, the Prince's friend and court architect. It substituted an older, baroque hunting lodge. Prince Leopold...

  • Gondola Ride

The easiest and most romantic way to get a general impression of the park is a gondola ride. The gondola station is located on the bank of the lake halfway between the palace and the (currently closed) Eichenkranz inn. Groups can prebook, individual guests can just show up and wait until a handful of people has assembled. All technical details on...

    by mauro_pd Updated Nov 10, 2003

Placed at the entrance of the village, this restaurant is simply wonderful for potatoes ... leave your imagination ride the wind and if a potato is there then you can get it here !!!!!

Favorite Dish: I forgot what I got ... but for sure it was oooooo cheap compared to average price in other cities.

    A glass against the sun

    by mauro_pd Updated Oct 11, 2003

It's more than a beer in this land, it's a real local custom: Koestritzer, the black beer you can drink almost everywher in East Germany.
Taste is alittle bit bitter, it's not too much gazy and it does not making you completely drunken :-)))

    It's water, believe me

    by mauro_pd Updated Oct 16, 2003

Favorite thing: Since the lake is a self-made one, summer 2003 was definitely the wrong season to visit the park ... a lot of plants suffered due to water leakage; also the water lake was not so impressive :-( ... it was actually almost mud in some areas.
