    Doner Kebobs anyone?

  • This was the closest place to the hostel where we were staying, Mitte Backpackers, all of about 20 steps away. One of the hotel clerks recommended it and rightfully so. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't remember the name of the place, but it was a Turkish deli. Being the most recent immigrant group to reach Germany, Turkish food is still pretty cheap. Very clean and with a friendly and patient staff. It was so great we continuously went there during our stay in Berlin!

The doner kebobs (forgive any misspellings please) were the main highlight as the were essentially a complete meal on their own: similar to a gyro, including meat and all sorts of fresh and crispy veggies, with a light sauce, and served on a flatbread...Big, toasty, satisfying and very inexpensive -- drippy goodness. Side items were of the vegetable kind and also just as fresh and delicious. One standout was a tomato and goatcheese (possibly feta) salad drizzled with herbs and olive oil.

    Belluno: Italian restaurant at Prenzlauerberg

  • Good atmosphere, friendly people, good menu. Located in trendy Prenzlauer Berg.

I had carpaccio to start with, which was, I'm afraid, covered with too much rucola.
The "Kartoffel Kosschen" (Gnocchi) was delicious.
Not a cheap restaurant btw (The "rotwein" Merlot was 4,50 euro) but guests and hosts go dressed informally.

    Kartoffel Kosschen (Gnocchi): 7,50 euro
    0,2 l Merlot "rotwein": 4,50 euro

  • This small and cosy restaurant is located at one of the borders of former West-Berlin at FriedrichstraBe, with a view of Checkpoing Charlie (it is said that during the presence of the Berlin wall, spies used this restaurant to do their work).

The menu is a bit limited; I went for "lunch" with Irish Coffee and "Beeren mit Zahne Torte" and paid 7,70 euro.

The restaurant has a show-window with "Kuche", that all looked delicious.

  • Atop a hill in Prenzlauer Berg lies this excellent pizza joint. Quite large and hip, with indie rock posters and scribbled writing covering the walls, I felt right at home. My expectations for the pizza were not so high being that I live in NYC, I love pizza and I have had some horrid pizza experiences in European cities outside of Italy, but I thought it was wonderful. The staff was quite friendly (on my first visit at least) and I made friends with 2 hipster chicks from San Francisco at the community style table. Our waiter even gave us free shots at the end of our meal.

    Pizza.

Konditorei & Cafe GAESE: Eating Kuche at Gaese's

  • Wonderfull show-window with typical German "Kuche". List of coffees to go with it.

Nice little place at the corner of FasanenstraBe and Hohenzollerndamm, overlooking the streetcorner.
Probably less expensive than "konditoreien" in the centre of the city.

Lutter & Wegner: Chique restaurant in Charlottenburg

  • My travelguide recommended this restaurant because of the Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad, and indeed, it was not bad, but not worth the 24,60 euro (including "rotwein" Merlot for 4 euro).
I was never a big fan of Schnitzels anyway, but I thought I'd try.

This is a restaurant where you're asked which kind of water you'd like; guests and hosts are dressed formally (no jeans and sneakers!).

  • In the corner of Pariser Platz, closes to the Brandenburger Tor.

Has a library and a diner. The menu shows pictures of both (ex-) presidents of the United States, Bill Clinton and George Bush jr, with the German chancellors at the time, resp, Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schroder.

Again, I had "lunch" with Torte (Topfenstrudel mit Zahne) and Irish Coffee. I paid 10,50 euro in total; the Strudel was quite expensive with 5,50 euro.

  • We were in a hurry and walked into this restaurant because it was near our hotel and it seemed to be busy with customers. The decoration was a bit sad. The waiter asked where we were from and spoke to us in French. I ordered medallion filled with mozzarella and ruccula (sp?) and my hubby had pizza mixta. My dish was really good, but my hubby thought his pizza was okay.
