We've just done a long cheap weekend in Luebeck thanks to Ryanair. I was really impressed by the local bus system, which seems to go just about everywhere, all within about a minute of the time which is scheduled at each stop. The journey into town took less than half an hour. There's a really good bus map which shows all the routes and connections. The buses might be no big deal to most Europeans, but to us Brits it was a revelation.
We bought a Luebeck-Card for 10 Euros, which gave us 3-days use of the public transport system and discounts to some museums and boat trips. Strangely, I couldn't buy the card at the airport, so I had to pay for the bus into town. That may have been because I asked for a "Happy Card", which is how it's advertised in English (I just got blank looks), whereas everyone seems to know it as the Luebeck Card. You can always buy it from the website in advance and have it posted to you.
As the buses are so good, I would suggest staying somewhere outside the centre to save money and using the pass for the short trip into the town centre.

Cheap flights to Luebeck!
I would have never thought of going to Luebeck, if it hadn't been for Ryanair. They have some great offers at times, and I check their website regularly. I am lucky to have two airports to choose from : Stockholm Skavsta and Stockholm Västerås.
One evening I was browsing on their website and found this great offer, Stockholm Skavsta to Luebeck for only 20 euro per person (tax included). Hahaha, that was something I couldn't let go, so I booked right away! I decided to make it only a daytrip, and that is a great possibility for this destionation from Stockholm. The flight leave early morning to Luebeck and return back at 9 in the evening. That gives you plenty of time to walk around the city, see the old town and do some shopping as well :-))
I reallly love Ryanair, it's simple to book, check in, flights are on time, and it's sooo cheap! One thing to keep in mind though is the maximum lugage: 15 kg and 1 suitcase and the hand lugage is max. 7kg. They do check at the gate for the weight of the hand lugage, so be aware of that. Also make sure you are always on time for your flight! If they close the gate (I think mostly 30 minutes before departure), there is no way you will get on the plane.
There is a bus going approx. every 20 minutes from the airport to the centre of Luebeck. The trip takes about 30 minutes and only costs a few euro.
The best way is by plain,...
The best way is by plain, because its the easyest!
I came with a bout, and its not the best side of Lubeck!
Thre are train's going all the time from Hamburg!
The best way is by foot, becase its not a big town, and you can realy see the nice town!
Luebeck has a very big Central station and the city is pretty well connected to all major cities in Germany & also with some cities in Europe outside Germany. there are frequent trains.
I came across this advertisement regarding ferry tours around various nearby places. I guess this might interest travellers.
Round tour through the canals and harbour
Every harbour offers its boat tours, and I think in general it´s worth to do it, because the view from the sea is always special and different to what you can see normally.
