Mueggesfelde

by globetrott

Mueggesfelde is another manor-farm close to Bad Segeberg and my mother had to help there at the farm during WW II because all of the male population had to go to war and the young girls were sent to the farms as farm-helpers.Nowadays they mainly have horses and on my main picture you can see my mother paying a visit in 2002, when we were on vacation nearby.

Kollmar

by globetrott

Kollmar is one of the small villages, that you will pass through when driving along the river Elbe from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel. Kollmar looks so peacefully and the river Elbe is wide there like a giant lake, in fact the big ships are passing by the village in a distance of 1 km. A high dike is protecting the village against the floods and at the same time you can also walk on top of that dike in order to enjoy the great view and fresh air.Swimming is forbidden there because of polluted water !!!Maybe because of the atomic powerplant Brokdorf, maybe for other reasons !

a port for antique ships in Kiel

by globetrott

Not far from the place where the giant cruiseships are docking in Kiel you will find a small part of the port, where the old, traditional sailingships are docked, partly like in a museum and partly they are still leaving their docking-places for turns to the Baltic sea.My favorite one was an old ship with a nice restaurant built in - see my restaurant tip !From the city of Kiel you can walk to these ships over a folding-drawbridge, that will be folded, whenever larger ships will pass through.

Brokdorf

by globetrott

The small village of Brokdorf stands mainly for an atomic power plant, that plenty of young people tried to fight against, but did not succed lots of years ago.Brokdorf is a lovely village as well with a nice church and a few interesting tomb-stones around of it. Take a walk through the village and you will see some really interesting farmouses. Brokdorf is one of the villages, that you will pass by when driving along the river Elbe from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel.

Seedorf

by globetrott

Seedorf is a small village close to Bad Segeberg. It consists mainly of the manor-house that you will see on my main picture. My mother had to serve there during the HJ-time, and she had to go there, when she was 17 years old. With her austrian passport there was no escape after the "Anschluss" and it started peacefully with singing, marching, group-activities etc. and it ended with assistance-works, when defending the area during WW II. Seedorf as a romantic place with a lake nearby, the long alleys of trees, the manor-farm and the large woods was one of the stories my mother used to tell us, while we were children and we have been there several times on vacation : The manorhouse offers some appartments for tourists in a side-building and it is a great base for excursions to Bosau and other places.

Sankt Margarethen

by globetrott

Sankt Margarethen is one of the tiny villages that you will pass through, while driving from Hamburg to Brunsbuettel along the river Elbe. Take a stop there and take a walk through the village when you like to see some interesting houses in a peaceful surrounding. Unfortunately the atomic powerplant of Brokdorf is in a distance of just 4 km. Interesting to see the old church with the seperate wooden belltower.

giant bridges over Kielcanal

by globetrott

The county of Schleswig-Holstein is almost totally flat and when-ever the train-track or the roads have to get over the Kielcanal, it is necessary to build giant bridges in order to make them high enough for the big cruiseships to pass under them. That fact leads to strange constructions like in Rendsburg, where the train-station is close to the canal and the train-track is made in a large loop, so the trains could gain hight rather smoothly, finaly built on high iron-stilts.

Hochdonn

by globetrott

Hochdonn is an interesting place to go for "cruiseship-spotting" because it is just a few km from Brunsbuettel and the giant train-bridge makes a perfect place to take pics of the cruiseships. Another quite interesting sight of Hochdonn is the small windmill next to the canal, it is mainly used for weddings and other special festivities. In Hochdonn you can also cross the canal by a car-ferry, free of charge like all other ferries crossing the Kielcanal / Nord-Ostsee-Kanal.

Bosau

Bosau is a tiny village with an interesting church. When you enlarge my photographs you can see the great paintings and wooden decorations of this lovely church, that you can visit freely and without restrictions during the day.

The Elbe Marshes

by RhineRoll

The river Elbe is Germany's second biggest river after the Rhine. Unlike Rhine and Danube, the Elbe, coming from Czechia, doesn't leave German territory: Past Hamburg, the river widens more and more before finally flowing into the North Sea. The Elbe marshes are to be found north of Hamburg on both sides of the river. After a catastrophic storm flood in 1962, large dykes were built and huge flood gates secure the tributaries. This is a beautiful serene landscape with lots of water and wide skies. On the southern shore (belonging to Lower Saxony) the main town would be Stade. The nothern shore belongs to Schleswig-Holstein. One of the nicest places to walk through the marshes and along the Elbe shore is in Kollmar, between the market towns of Elmshorn and Glückstadt (car ferry from Glückstadt to Wischhafen). Foreign tourists tend to overlook completely. You really shouldn't"!!!!
