 | Schleswig Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 17 | | A decisive turning point in the history of Schleswig was when it became the seat of the royal court in the middle of the 16th century. Schloss Gottorf was transformed from a modest moated castle into a magnificent palace, and became an intellectual and cultural centre Today the palace houses the state museums, with the main attractions including the Iron Age bog finds and a collection of expressionist art of international importance in the Kreuzstall. The Cathedral of St Peter in Schleswig rises high above the town and its vicinity. Its 112-metre spire was added to the building in the years 1894-1984 but the church itself is much older and dates back to the 12th century, although it has undergone many alterations since. One of the original fragments of the church is the Romanesque portal of 1180. Some other interesting features include the Gothic Altar of the Magi, a four-metre-high wood carving of Christophorus and the painting of the Blue Madonna by Jurgen Ovens, a pupil of Rembrandt's. But probably the greatest attraction is the famous Bordesholm Altar carved in oak wood by Hans Bruggemann. This monumental and yet exquisitely fine masterpiece took him 7 years to complete - from 1514 to 1521. It is 12.6 metres high and depicts the biblical story of Christ from his arrest to Ascension. If you can spare the time and feel up to it, you could climb the tower to the platform at the height of 65 metres to admire the panorama of the area. The bells above it can be viewed too but only with a guided tour which starts in the cathedral. Leave a Comment

The most impressive medieval building in the city is the St. Peters Cathedral in the old town. Waldemar III was crowned King of Denmark in this cathedral on 24 June 1218. Climb the steps of the Neo-Gothic spire, 112 metres high. From there you will have a marvellous view of Schleswig’s old town. And if You are in the church don't miss to take a look at the Bordesholmer Altar by Hans Brüggemann, a masterpiece of European wood carving. Leave a Comment Directions: It's in the middle of the town, not far from the Holm. It's more than 100m high, so You cannot miss it.Website: www.schleswig.de
