by bonio Once a community of fishermen, Holm is centred around a cemetry. Good to walk around the village until the snow comes! good cafe here though. Leave a Comment

by bonio Our B & B was just a short walk to the harbour and even on a cold March afternoon there was some activity. Interesting to see the fishing boats. I imagine it's a great place to visit on a warmer day. Leave a Comment

The schloss Gottrof, once a royal castle and center of the Schleswig-Holstein region. Today the castle serves as a museum, and a courious reminder of the diversity of independent germans political entities in the 17'th century. Directions: By the Schlei (the bay) almost opposit the skyscraper (the only one in town [july; 2006])

Schleswig is a old city originally founded by Vikings. During the first millenium of the citys history it has more or less been equally influenced by Danish culture and German culture. This mix in influence can be seen in the hanseatic influence on the building style in the inner city. The Danish infuence can still 150 years after the city was last under danish administration be seen on the many shops with signs in danish. Directions: The inner city

The first and last thing you see when arriving in, or leaving Schleswig is its high tower . The tower is not very old and dates from the 19th Century. The real treasures of St. Peter's Cathedral are to be found inside. To find so many mediaeval artistic treasures in this small seaside town, off the main tourist track, was a most unexpected bonus. Frescoes, a polychromed retable, a most unusual and beautiful statue of St Christopher carved in wood by Hans Bruggemann, the creator of the Cathedral's Masterpiece -the Bordesholm altar in the choir and a contemporary of Albrecht Durer. This amazing work is said to have been commissioned originally for the Augustinian Kloster of Bordelsholm near Kiel. It was carved between 1514 and 1521. It is over 12 metres high and its panels contain more than 400 delicately carved figures, set off by individual frames that look as though they are filigree lacework. The panels depicting the Passion scenes are believed to be based on woodcuts by Durer. The intricate beauty of this piece took my breath away. I am sorry that my photos cannot reflect the detail of the work. Not a great deal is known about Bruggemann and myths about his life abound. One says that the monks of Bordesholm were so jealous they wanted to make sure nobody else would ever have an Altar to rival their. So they gave him a potion that made him blind and unable to work again. Leave a Comment
