    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Now this is not going to go down well in the local patriots camp, but here goes anyway: The other special thing about Uetersen is the outrageous stupidity of many of its inhabitants -- a curious mixture of stubborn farmers, arrogant bourgeous burghers and underprivileged, undereducated social housing dwellers. The rich Hamburg commuters are improving the situation, but they haven't been able to influence decisionmaking in the city council yet.

Whereas most communities around Hamburg are thriving due to rich people moving into the suburbs, Uetersen is sliding down. If the current developments continue, it will probably be swallowed by Tornesch, its dynamic neighbour community.

Whatever sensible economic development and/or financial consolidation suggestions are put on the table, they are turned down by the municipal administration, backed by a majority of people. The A 20 motorway extension? We don't want loud cars in our backyards. Merging with the neighbour town Tornesch? We want to stay on our own. Our neighborhood has dioxine contaiminated soils? Let's all keep quiet about it so our property values won't collapse and we can sell them to uninformed buyers.

If you still consider moving here and buying a house, be especially careful about high levels of ground water. Most of the land used to be moors, so the water levels are high. And the many nurseries want to keep it that way. Lots of houses have wet cellars as a result. Don't count on honest information from anybody, though.

How my parents got here -- my dad was given a job as a teacher at the military academy in Hamburg, and he looked for a cheap house to buy without knowing himself around at all. *** happens.
