The Rococo Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rococo Castle was once a Late-Gothic manor-house before Duke Ernst August I. reconstructed it to a small castle in Rococo-style between 1736 and 1747.
When I was here the castle was under reconstruction.

    The Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • The gardens impressed me most. They included a vineyard, which was planted in 1735, several flower gardens of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the rose passageway of 1818. This passageway was blossoming when I as there. What a romantic place. Have a look on my travelogue to see that passageway.

    Camburg

  • Camburg is a small town with less then 3000 inhabitants in the Saale Valley, 15km away from Apolda. It is popular for the lime stone formation. The lime stone plates were leveled up due to tectonic movement.

    Dornburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dornburg has less then 1000 inhabitants but has one of the longest and most exciting history of Thuringia. The town can look back to a more then 1000 year long history. The main attractions are the castles but also around the big market square you can discover some architectural gems.

    The Old Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • The basement of the castle dates back to the year 937. Emperor Otto I. visited Dornburg three times, 952, 958 and 965. The castle itself became destroyed in the Saxon Fratricidal War of 1451. On the basement a new castle in Late-Gothic style was re-erected.
When I was here, in 2003, the castle was under reconstruction.

The southwestern castle was erected in 1539 and bought 1824 by Duke Carl - August of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1828 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent here some holidays.

    Camburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Due to the Saale River Camburg has grown to a rich town. In the centre you can still see the wealth of the town. Most of the beautiful brick-stone buildings has been restored in the past years.

    A good website:
