Even if the Bad Salzungen station may look a bit bleak, it's still a good place to start the visit to this area. Various connections towards Bad Hersfeld, Eisenach or Meiningen can be made from here, even if it's not on a main line.

Bad Salzungen is close to the Thüringer Wald, Eisenach and the Rhön, with great hiking opportunities throughout.

Close to Bad Salzungen, you will find some recent scars of (Kali, potassium) mining activity, most prominent being the high white mounds of this "salt"... The museum, as the spa's itself can be worth a visit, the "white hills"may be interesting to some, and an eyesore to others.

Starting with a walk around the main "Teich" (pond) in the Kurpark, the area is great for hiking, and cycling, which is a "must" anyway when you are working on your fitness in a spa....
But further around, the region is renowned for it's hiking trails. The famous "Rennweg" forest-trail starts close to Bad Salzungen and nearby Eisenach, and covers a large stretch of the Thüringer Wald to the east.
To the south, the Rhön hills stretch through this border area of 3 federal states - Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria, offering great hiking through open countryside.
