It is possible to drive yourself or be driven around by a chauffeur in a vintage-car in Eisenach. When you click on my link below you get to a hotel in Eisenach, that had such an offer of a vintage-Wartburg or the E 340, that you see on my main photograph.
Maybe they own these cars, maybe they rent them somewhere, in any case it might be the best to get in contact with them, when you are interested in such a ride !
In Eisenach BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) were producing their cars before WW II and the car-production was continued after the war under the name EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke) - they were forced to change the name and also the Logo and the typical 2 BMW-kidneys
You could choose between 2 cars :
1)EMW 340-2 , 1953 - 21000 cars of that type were built between 1949 and 1955 in Eisenach, it has 6 cylindres, 57 HP and a max. speed of 120km/h
2)Wartburg 311, 1963 - 259.000 of this car were built between 1955 and 1965, it had 45 HP and a max.speed of 120km/h. On my picture : diff. versions of a Wartburg 311, BUT NOT the one that you may rent !
Haven't been in Eisenach by train. Been to train station nevertheless (to get newspaper), and was very surprised by this station's cleaness, such a neat station! Very lightful! Very friendly! No scary atmosphere, no dirt at all, no bad smell at all, and also it's a non-smoking station! Very impressive! And station has a Subway dining place! Anyway, can't recommend certain connections by train, but thought the link below might be pretty helpful. Unfortunately not in English translated.
Reconstructed in 1904 in a massive Wilhelminian Gruenderzeit style, Eisenach's main station has remarkable stained glass windows. At the street side the window depicts the history of the watch-making industries in the vicinity of Eisenach and on the rail side the automobile manufacturing traditions of Eisenach.
Given one is some where around Frankfurt/Hesse, take A648 (direction of Wiesbaden//Kassel),
switch onto A5 direction of Dortmund, then some time later onto A7 then at exit Kirchheimer Dreieck, switch into direction Berlin/Dresden/Erfurt/Bad Hersfeld, then later on take exit Eisenach-West.
Drive up to Wartburg in your own car or take Bus #10 , in any case you have to walk a bit at the end of this bus-line, that will drop you at the large car-park below the castle. This walk is rather easy, BUT with lots of steps, partly asphalted, partly with gravel...
While I was there in summer 2006 there were some street-musicans along the way to the Wartburg, playing on the flute, that was nice !
For handicapped and elderly people there is also a shuttle-bus from the car-parking to the castle.
Parking-fees are for a full day :
Cars & Motorhomes are 4 euros
motorbikes are 1 euro and buses are 6,-
Nur ein Esel geht zu Fuss is a german proverb often used for the donkeys, that were responsible for the transport of goods and fresh water up to the Wartburg since the year 1480 ! And still today children may get to the Wartburg riding on a donkey.
This service is offered mainly during the summerseason and in good weather of course and it is absolutely necessary to reserve that ride some time in advance. The owner of the donkeys, Mr. Hoelzer takes reservations under tel. +49 (0) 36912104
The ride takes about 20 minutes and will end at the large car-park beneath the castle. The maximum weight that the donkeys may carry is 65 kg, so this offer is ment mainly for children !
Rides are possible in April : sa+su 10.00a.m.-04.00p.m.
in May : tue-sun 10.00a.m.-04.00p.m
June - October daily from 10.00-04.00p.m.
