Company for Little Green Men
You all know the little green men who live in the traffic lights, telling you when to cross the street? Well, in Erfurt they're no longer alone but have got company. A little green lady has joined them. She seems to be in a hurry, swinging her handbag with lots of energy.
I wonder if she will also come to other cities in Germany. I'm sure the little green men would welcome her.

The four-lane street that was built on the grounds of the former city walls is named after Soviet hero Juri Gagarin in the east and south of the old town. There is also a monument commemorating him at the corner Juri-Gagarin-Ring and Kämpferstraße, right on the stop "Krämpfertor" of tram #2, vis-a-vis from the Radisson Blu hotel.
In case you don't know who Juri Gagarin was (hard to believe!): Born 9 March 1934, he died 27 March 1968 when the MiG-15 training jet he was piloting crashed. He was the first human being to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.
Letterboxes are typically yellow and in uniform, simple design in Germany. It happens that you see a historical letterbox somewhere in different colour and shape, but I was amazed that I happened to see three or four of those more elaborate, blue letterboxes in Erfurt. This picture was taken at the town hall, I saw another one at the main post office at Anger, don't remember where the others were.
The style is Art Nouveau, I think, with little caryatids at the sides of the box.
Bernd das Brot
This odd looking figure (pic 1) next to the town hall is "Bernd das Brot" (Bernd the bread). It is a puppet character, and cult figure of the German children's television channel KI.KA. This channel is based in Erfurt, the logo greets the visitor at the main railway station (pic 2). The short-armed character was created in 2000 and finally gained fame in 2003. He is depressed, grumpy, melancholic, speaks in deep, gloomy voice. In 2004 Bernd das Brot won the Adolf-Grimme-Award (German equivalent of Emmy Award) for "the right to bad mood" - LOL!
In fall 2007 KI.KA channel donated this statue to the city of Erfurt on occasion of the channel's 10th anniversary. On 21 January 2009 the figure was kidnapped by political activists, it was found intact on 1 February, only 11 days later.

I took this photograph in the Domplatz of Erfurt. It shows the differences between police officers in the UK & Germany. Though everyone has to eat, its still unusual to see police officers in the UK eating within public view let alone smoking. Mind you those hot dogs are tasty.
Right next to the Gagarin monument is an air measurement station of the Thuringian State authority for Environment and Geology. Nothing special, as these measurements are obligatory in Germany. However, I found it very "Germanic" that they do the air measurement right on a VERY busy four-lane street in the heart of the city. We Germans are very strict, even exceed on our duties. I can imagine the air measurements in other, say Mediterranean countries maybe, would be taken at a quiet residential area street. No?
the Christmas Market
Weihnachtsmarkt ( the Christmas Market). In Erfurt this is on the Main Square. Every year 4 weeks before the Christmas, in the Advent time you can spend here your time. The citiziens of Erfurt and many tourists too buy here the christmas souvenirs, drink hot wine, eat many sweets and meet friends and family.

Half Timbered Houses.
Erfurt has many half timbered buildings nice to look at. This form of building goes back years.. Because taxes were paid on the ground level area., builders invented the overhang at first floor level so has not to pay tax.
Try the local speciality - Thüringer Rostbratwurst.
It is a more than 800 jears old tradition and you get it in almost every local restaurant and in some local fast-food-snack-shops as well.
The speciality from Thuringen is the sousage. It taste very good. The people in Thuringen they like to grill.

In Erfurt in the old town you can meet in the street a barrel organ player. I find this very romantic.
