Directly at border to Bavaria, 6 km far from Gefell, you find the little town Hirschberg with a beatiful nature park named Hag. Belong the river Saale, partly a border river, you walk through wonderful nature. Nice walk tours, a bridge above the water, with one of the longest benches (wooden) of the world, some nice viewpoints and high above the Palace of Hirschberg. But therein is no museum, very pity.
Walking through our region means relaxing. At the end of a tour most people like to have a beautiful view above landscape.
One of these is from the place Heinrichstein (start picture of Gefell page) and another that view from Marienstein.
Marienstein is a refuge on a little cliff, high above the water and village Saaldorf.
So tour starts in Saaldorf (village at main road Lobenstein - A9).
The Blue gold of the region is slate. Many houses have slate roofs or complete walls with slate.
The slate mining has tradition since centuries. In Lehesten one can visit such a mine or one of few roofer's schools of Germany. The pupils of this roofer school have created a whole miniature village which is to be visited on the terrain of the school.
The biggest slate for little pupils of the world you can see in Lehesten mine museum.
Steamboat trips over the Thuringian Sea are possible from April up to the late autumn. In town Saalburg there are the tickets You can buy directly there or with advance order. The whole year offers the society also some highlights. Night journeys, with Dixieland or jazz band and more.
Water sport in every form. Canoe driving, windsurfing, sailing, water-ski, to oar? The Thuringian Sea has to offer everything what means great fun on the water, except from high waves.
Several oar competitions and regattas take place during the year. Naturally one must not own everything itself, one can rent it. All around the reservoir there are many lending stations. Also motorboats lie before anchor and waits for guests.
These are typical houses of our region. The so called Blue Gold is the front material and nearly all houses roofing by slate. Warm, long-living and from home mines.
