The streets of Oberhof are lined by nice old villas. As the first tourists, who came to enjoy the fresh air and the hiking trails of Oberhof were wealthy city-people and noblemen, the villas an dhotels were build to serve their needs. It is very nice to see this old buildings. Some of them have been torn down during GDR-times, some other survived at hostels for children and workpeople. Today the villas are Guesthouses and hotels again.

As most of the famous winter sport heroes have visited Oberhof and made it a center of winter sports, the is a "Walk o fFame" in the city center. I am not very interested in wintersports, so I do not know the names. But for sure, there is also Sven Weissflog mentionend.

    Christus Church

    Church

The Christus Church was build in 1953. This was very unusual in communist GDR. It was the first church to be build in GDR. It is located on top of central hill and has been the highest located church in Thuringia for many years. This was very annoying for the local politicians of GDR. They tried to cover the church by building ugly highrise buildings around it. Most of this buildings have now been torn down and the church tower ist again the highest point in the city-center.

In the center of Oberhof near the bus-terminal is a very interesting monument: the Duke-Ernst-Monument. The monument commemorates Ernst II, the duke of Sachsen-Gotha, who like to hunt in the area of Oberhof.

In 1949 the monument had to be taken away and should have been destroyed. But the people of Oberhof hid the sculpture. After the reunification the sculpture returned to its old place.

    Rennsteig

The traditional route on the ridge of the mountains has been a messenger path between Southern Thueringia and Bavaria and Swabia.

Famous and anonymous contemporary witnesses have set foot on this mostly stony, sometimes springy, occasionally muddy and wet and partially difficult and radicular path throughout the last centuries. Thanks to the "Rennsteigverein" (Club), founded in 1896, a large number of people use the annual holidays around Whitsun to walk along the whole 168.3-kilometer long path from Hörschel to Blankenstein in 6 days. Once a year, the path unites tens of thousands of runners and walkers for one day. The GutsMuths - Rennsteiglauf is one of the largest events of this kind of sport in Europe.

The Rennsteig is very famous and I used my spare time in Oberhof to hike just for two hours along the Rennsteig. Very nice! The Rennsteig is signed by the way you see on pic 4, so you won't get lost.

In the center of Oberhof is also a nice Exotarium with many big spiders, thousands of fish and other exotic animals. It is very interesting and quite big.
