Gotha

by globetrott

Dont miss Gotha, it is close to Weimar and Eisenach and it is also a lovely town with a large palace and many interesting buildings. I had a short stop-over there and was impressed by the lovely townhall, that you may see on my 2nd picture. About 800 meters from the townhall you may see the impressive castle / palace of Gotha, it is built on a narrow hill overlooking the town and you may walk freely and without restrictions through its courts and parks. The tourist-information is in the lovely building that you may see on my last picture, it is opposite of the townhall !

Saurian field Bromacker, Tambach-Dietharz

by elgin99

Saurian skeleton findings excited sensation again recently, prehistorical events in and around Tambach-Dietharz are famous. The discovery of the most significant saurian habitat beyond the USA, in the Bromacker field in Tambach-Dietharz, succeeded in 1974 to the Gothaer paleontologist Dr. Thomas Martens. Together with vertebrate paleontologists from the USA and other specialists extensive excavation work and the scientific evaluation of the Thuringian findings occur since then. By the discovery of the forms of saurian in the Bromacker field could be proved that Europe with North America and the other today's continents formed a gigantic land mass which is called supercontinent Pangäa. One of the most spectacular findings was the entire skeleton of one saurian, named Diadectes absitus, which lived before approx. 290 Mil. years.

August HORCH - museum in Zwickau

by globetrott

Horch-Museum is an interesting car-museum in Zwickau / Thueringen and most people dont known that Horch used to be one of the most noble and expensive car-manufacturers of Germany. August Horch had left the company "Horch" in order to build his own cars and because he was not allowed to build them under the well-known name of Horch he used that same expression (in german horch means Listen !) in latin : and the wellknown name of AUDI was born. The Museum is open daily except Mondays:from 09.30 am till 05.00pm____________________ TRABBI is another wellknown car built in Zwickau and there is a great offer that I found for all trabbi-fans :2 nights in the Schlosshotel Schweinsburgincluding breakfastbuffet and a candle-light-dinnerfree Sauna and whirlpooldrive by TRABBI to the Horch-museum in Zwickau149,- p.p. in the double 170,- in the singleroom39,- p.p. for additional nights---vom...

Hahnstein : Klausenhof

by globetrott

It is not only the interesting castle-ruins that take you back to medieval times in Hanstein. There is also a scenic country-inn that combines medieval architecture and excellent food of today ! The building of Klausenhof in Hanstein is a special sight by itself : an old restaurant and inn, beautifully decorated and partly rebuilt in the old style you really have the feeling to be back in the 17th century or even before that time. The restaurant has also a few rooms to rent and under the roof you may rent the so-called "Kreuzfahrerlager" , that is a large room with a wonderful doublebed and various small rooms next to it, where the ordinary people may sleep in one bed next to the other. That is rented for parties of people, who will also order a feast or banquet in the restaurant, see my pics for the great interior and fine details.

Asbach - remains of the iron curtain

by globetrott

In Asbach you will find one of the few areas along the former borderline of the "Iron Curtain" that still looks like in the times of the "Cold War". It is a great museum and at one side you will see the left overs of several hundred meters of the "Wall" and even that strip of plain earth without any grass that would show all traces of feet having crossed there is still maintained there today. There is also a nice collection of cars , helicopters and other accesories used by the border-controls of both sides.DDR-Museum Asbach Schifflersgrund is openNov-Feb: Closed on Monday !Tue-Fri : 10.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.Sat-Sun : 11.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.March - October : Daily 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.

Automobile Welt Eisenach

by globetrott

Automobile Welt Eisenach is an interesting car-museum that you will find in the outskirts of Eisenach. This lovely museum was built inside the former Wartburg-production-halls. The production of cars in Eisenach has a long tradition : The first car was built there in 1899, the famous Wartburg-Motorenwagen with 5 HP. More pupolar cars that were built in Eisenach : BMW Dixi, the BMW Roadstar 328. After WW II BMW Eisenach had to change its name into EMW and finally Wartburg became the 2nd most popular car in DDR after the more popular Trabbi.I enjoyed that car-museum very much, one of my favorites was a so called camping-edition of a Wartburg, that was even exported to Great Britain ( my last picture)The museum is open for visitors Tue-Sun : 11.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.entrance-fee is 3 Euros99817 Eisenach - Friedrich-Naumann-Straße 10

Lovely Romantic Walk

by elgin99

You should not miss that walk. It has another nature as you would see if you walk across Thuringian Forest. That area is lovely and romantic.I mean the tour from village Mühlberg upt to the Mühlburg (Castle), up to the tower, next across the hills to the Veste Wachsenburg (Castle Wachsenburg). There you should have an cup of coffee or a good meal and enjoy the fascinating view to the three castles and wonderful landscape.Back way you should take across meadows in the valley to the village Mühlberg. I promise, so you will get another surprisingly views, and be satisfied because of such a beautiful walk if you reach your starting point after that.It is one of my favourite walks in my home region, esp. in Spring or autumn.

Vanished town new home for endangered species

by weed6886

When travelling around the Heldburg area, an interesting detour is the site of the village of Billmuthausen. The village was considered too close to the border of West Germany by the East German government. Over the years, families that were considered "untrustworthy" by the government were moved out. In 1978 it was ordered that the town be completly destroyed and the villagers moved out. All traces of the buildings were removed except the foundations. In 1994, a local group began cleaning up the site and building a memorial. The town well has been rebuilt, and pictures of the buildings mark the sites they once occupied. The nearby guard tower has been converted into a bat house, and is now home to several endangered species of bats and birds. Looking through the open door, the holding cells for prisoners are now filled with birdhouses.

Rocks in Marderschlucht, Tambach

by elgin99

Really impressive to see the rocks during a walk across that gorge. It´s no long valley, but cool in hot summer and so lovely, because you always walk along the little beck Marderbach. Its a romantic narrow gorge with high mighty rocks.Take the road to Tambach-Dietharz, then left into the street to water reservoir Schmalwasser and to Falkenstein (see that tip), until the parking place (with snack). From there way starts to the left, its a sign.
