    by elgin99 Updated Feb 18, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Winter sports and Oberhof - one name with international reputation. Skiing, luge, bob on Rennsteig and the region around Oberhof, names of skiing villages like Schmiedefeld, Schmuecke, to the highest mountain of Thuringia (Beerberg), a great event.
Fantastic cross-country ski tracks are worth to spent a day... or more. An area that is assured of snow! Learning skiing is not so easy there because the ski schools are mostly fully booked.
You will meet many people there from all over the world.

Best time is in the week. On weekend you find often no free parking places for many kilometers belong roads.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Walking to the rock Falkenstein and climbing. Two recommended tips for nature friends.
from Tabach-Dietharz, only some kms far from Tabarz, belong the water reservoir to the Falkenstein rock.
There is a cottage on its feet, with little meals, from the Alpenverein (mountaineer Alps Association), mountain rescue service.
The falcon's stone is a 96 meter high porphyry rock which near rises of the racing steep path in the sky. His size impresses not only traveller, but also shows for climbing sportsmen a challenge. Thousands of them scale yearly the most popular rock of the Thuringian wood. The climbing ways climbable with professional equipment partially go by fissures and caves up to the summit cross. However, the normal traveller can admire the falcon's stone merely from below. The rock lies in one for car closed area and is accessible exclusively on foot or by bicycle. Footpaths lead from all directions here. A 7 km long distance begins in Tambach-Dietharz and winds in the imposing reservoir of the dam along narrow water reason.
