... and it was "my school".

Christian Gotthilf Salzmann, priest's son from Sömmerda came in 1784 to Schnepfenthal to found an own reformatory. He brought the ideas of the Philantropismus.

From many countries of Germany, partly also of the foreign country the pupils came to Schnepfenthal. The significant pedagogues whose names are known over the borders of Thuringia, were teachers in Schnepfenthal, thus among others C.F.GutsMuths (founded school sport), J.M.Bechstein (founder of the first forest school), Carl Ritter (founder of the modern geography), Franz Schober (author of many Schubert's songs).
Almost all significant names of 18th and beginning 19th century are to be found in the visitors' book of the institution. The Salzmannschule is the oldest and only Philantropin which has outlasted the centuries!
Who knows that Daimler (Daimler/Benz cars), Siemens (yes, that man) Meyer (dictionaries), Springer (famous publisher and journalist), Brockhaus, other publishers, Götz of Berlichingen, many children nearly of all the big houses of princes, painters, authors, musicians, inventors, famous researchers, scientists and academics, famous generals, numerous ministers, other famous politicians, famous actors, world champions and Olympic winners, of whole Europe here have gone to school?
The school was renovated now, got some new parts, and today it is a special high school for foreign languages.
Everyone of us is very proud to have gone to school here. That was always the most important thing: we were always educated for the preservation of the individualism. Also during the time of the GDR - one exception.
The school has an interesting architecture (inside an own organ), lies on the mountain about the village Schnepfenthal and has a worth seeing museum and the first place for school sport in Germany.

The name for the castle ensemble means " Three of same " should have originated after the tradition because in a May night of 1231 a ball lightning has lit all three castles all at once and they were to be seen like blazing torches far out in the land.
Probably, however, one of three castles, Burg Gleichen, gave to the area his name.

The castle Burg Gleichen in the old connecting road between Franc and Thuringia presumably originated at the beginning of the 11th century among the counts of Weimar Orlamünde. From the platform of the tower you will have an unique view over the Thuringian scenery. Benches in the castle court and in the entrance to the castle invite to have a rest. In the tower room there is a small exhibit which mediates of interesting piece of information about the Gleichen area.

All three castles lie in visibility to each other. In the middle through them is the highway A4.

The castle Mühlberg is the oldest castle arrangement of the Gleichen area and was mentioned 309 for the first time.

The best-receiving Veste Wachsenburg was built in the 10th century, is formerly seat of the infamous predatory knight Apel of Vitzthum. It belongs to the country of Thuringia, owns a museum and is already since long time a feudal hotel.

    The Wartburg, World Heritage
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unesco Heritage!

Who doesn´t it know, that famous castle, because of Martin Luther or the legendary Minnesingers' Contest or "Singers' War". It´s the "German Castle", indeed, with such a long history, that I please you to read the whole history at website (in English, too) or at first my General tips about some details.

The Wartburg was founded in 1067 by Ludwig der Springer . But it is also very interesting to see the history of St. Elizabeth which was canonized by Pope Gregor IX only four years after her early death in 1231.

Martin Luthert translated there the New Testament from the original Greek texts into German.
Also Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed at the Wartburg Castle in 1777.

High above te town Eisenach on the mountain, fascinating castle with wonderful views over the Thuringian Forest.
Take the guided tours through the castle museum. You will be impressed of the halls and rooms, also the art treasures, like by Riemenschneider or Lucas Cranach d.Ä.

All declarations of things therein are written in some languages, but I missed tours in another language or with so called translators. Maybe later...

The Palace Friedenstein in Gotha is the biggest palace construction in Thuringia after the 30-year-old war. The Magdeburger Andreas Rudolphi explained the construction 1643-54. Duke Ernst I. of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg was a principal for the palace construction. It was the residence of duke Ernst I. (1601 - 1675), later administrative seat of the dukedom Saxony Gotha (1640 - 1894).

There are in the museum significant art treasures and the unique Ekhoftheater. Here you find also the research library and State library Gotha and the Thuringian State archive Gotha. Very important also the collection of famous paintings inside museum.
At time are the Italian weeks, with special art of Italy, very nice! Have also a look for the expositions about Napoleon´s traces in Gotha.

The Ekhoftheater is a special jewel in the row of historical theaters of the baroque. This oldest baroque theater of the world with original preserved stage technique, was installed 1683 under duke Friedrich I. by Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg in the ballroom of the residence.

Every year there is a famous theater festival. repertoire and pictures are there: Ekhof Festival (also in English and Italian language) Whole repertoire, strating in May, also on website of Palace Friedenstein.

Ludwig der Springer (Ludwig the Jumper), the founder of Wartburg in Eisenach donated in 1085 the monastery Reinhardsbrunn. From 1114 up to his death 1123 Ludwig of der Springer was a monk in his monastery.

Because of the beauty surroundings and the wild animals of the forests noble people came to the hunting seat and pleasure palace Reinhardsbrunn. During a big hunt in August, 1845 there was among the guests queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the king of Belgium as well as dukes and princes from completely Central Europe. Up to the begin of the WW II Reinhardsbrunn was summer seat, hunting and guest's house of the ducal family Coburg-Gotha. Here in 1938 Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha married the Prince Gustav Adolf of Schweden.

In the Third Reich the arrangement was rented to the Chancellery of the Reich. In 1961 it was opened as a hotel " For Travel Agencies of the GDR ".
The economic leaders of the Eastern Bloc met here just like scientist and historian from all over the world.
The castle Reinhardsbrunn is a historical architectural monument which is restored presently and become a big hotel . The castle has a marvelous park and was formerly a water residence.

Gotha is the capital town of district. One of the oldest towns in Germany. Gotha is one of the cultural and historical centres of Thuringia. Its symbol is
Friedenstein Castle, which can be seen for miles around. It is the oldest early baroque fortress structure in Germany and houses world-famous collections (see that tip).
The main market is the historical part of that town. Strolling through is worth to take some time oneself.

    Ebertswiese, mountain bath lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its a very nice walking tour.
Close to the Ebertswiese (Ebert meadow) to Rennsteig (run-rise) is on 780 meters height a mountain lake enclosed by rocks, which belongs to the most beautiful bath lakes in Thuringia. The emergence of the lake was caused by the mining industry. With the dismantling of porphyr one is discovered water veins, which fill out today a deep mining industry hole. 6-13 ms deep!
There is also a hotel (Ebertswiese).

The grain house is one of few buildings preserved from the monastery time. His splendid sandstone rosette is impressive. But also in the monastery ruins one can have with some imagination an image of the former minster.
The history of the place begins already in the 12-th century with the construction of a Cistercian monastery. Just 3 centuries the convent life continued, until the cloister was looted at the Easter night 1525 by a rebellion farm army and the monks fled. This was the beginning of the decay.
    Park around is very beautiful.

Dornburger Schlösser, the Three Castles on Rock
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some kilometers on the autobahn A4 to the north from my hometown the palaces high on the rock welcoming us.
Dornburg itsself is a small town built on a steep rock of shelly limestone, 90 ms above the river Saale. The place is well-known for its the castles, the Old Castle, the Rococo Palace and the Renaissance Castle.

The Old Castle is the one most closely connected with history of Dornburg. Frst mentioned in a document By Emperor Otto I, dated 937.

The Rococo Palace, the most recent of the three, was built on behalf of Duke Ernst August of Saxony-Weimar, completed in 1747. Every year on end of June (last weekend) the children of Dornburg and a rose festival commemorating the Duke´s birthday. That Rococo Palace, or the "New Castle" as Goethe called it, is one of the most significant baroque buildings of Central Germany. Offers historical furniture and a remarkable collection of porcelain.

The Renaissance Castle was built in 1540 as a manor. Goethe, a friend of the Duke, spent the last summer of 1828 here.

Whole three castles are very impressive, also the view above the river valley. The walk through the small village with its historical homes, the little market place and the park with castles is mavellous and romantic, espec. during the time of rose blossom.

A little beautiful village two kilometers "behind" the Großer Inselsberg. This vilage has nice timbered houses and many accomodations. Guest season is like Tabarz the whole year. Brotterode is famous because of its Worldcup of ski-jumping.

Only some kilometers far from Tabarz, but people have totally another dialect, a charming dialect.
