Leipzig

by ATLC

Well uh, Leipzig is not in Land Thuringen, but at 180 kms from our accommodation address in Finsterbergen, and our holiday being themed around JS Bach, the city had to be included.Thomaskirche and Nicolaikirche, that's where our composer worked. Also the Nicolaikirche (church) played an important part in 'Die Wende', end of the Iron Curtain era. Finally, shopping and some rather good cake at an old coffee house.

Erfurt

by ATLC

Erfurt boasts a great big church with a huge bell (The Maria Gloriosa, 11.000 kg, cast in The Netherlands), also one of the biggest market squares in Europe, and some lovely (Renaissance) architecture, and the typical charming nooks and crannies of a city stemming from the Medieval era.

Schloss Weimar

by globetrott

Schloss Weimar is another great sight that you certainly should not miss. The part with the round tower in front is the older part, the giant building of my last photograph was added some time later.

Weimar - the townhall

by globetrott

Take a whole day to explore Weimar and all of its sights or take a least a look and a stroll over the main square with the townhall in great renaissance style and plenty of lovely houses. My favorite one is the one with the green decorations, this building is also used by the tourist-information.

The former KZ Buchenwald

by globetrott

Weimar stands for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe at one side and then there is also another side : The former KZ of Buchenwald is just a few kilometers north of Weimar and you may still see lots of remains of this terrible part of German history there. On my 2nd picture you may see the cynic motto of the KZ in Buchenwald : "Jedem das Seine" (everybody gets what he/she deserves) . You may read this motto only from inside the KZ. I came in the evening, when the main gate of the site was locked already, but I was able to walk along the fence and find entrance through a side-gate next to the former crematorium. The museum is open for visitorsapril - October : 10.00a.m.-06.00p.m.november - march : 10.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.last entry always 30 min. before closing-time!closed at dec. 24th+26th+31st and jan. 1st !It is always CLOSED on Mondays !!BUT the gate-house and the Krematorium is open for visitors...

Johann Sebastian Bach -Haus

by globetrott

Johann Sebastian Bach is another person of history, who used to live in Eisenach / Thueringen. Unfortunately the Bach-haus was under restauration, while I was in Eisenach in May 2006 ! At least it was interesting to be able to see the construction of such an old half-timbered building - see also my other pictures of it ! This building is more than 600 years old and it is believed to be the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is about 600 meters from Lutherhaus. The monument for J.S. Bach is just a few meters from Bachhaus ! The museum of Bachhaus is open for visitors :daily between 10.00a.m. and 06.00p.m.entrance-fee is 4 euros

Lutherhaus in Eisenach

by globetrott

In Eisenach you can walk at many places on the traces of Martin Luther. One of these places is the Lutherhaus. First of all Lutherhouse is the oldest and one of the most beautiful half-timered houses of Eisenach. Some ledgends are telling us that Martin Luther spent 3 years of his life as a young child inside this house between 1498 and 1501.In 1898 it became a restaurant, called "Lutherkeller" and after the bombings of WW II a Luthermuseum was installed there and shows the different steps in the life of Martin Luther, read more about it on my Eisenach-page !Lutherhaus in Eisenach, Lutherplatz 8is open daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.

Hanstein castle

by globetrott

Hanstein castle is a medieval castle-ruin that happened to become part of the iron-curtain during the times of the cold war, beeing situated directely at the borderline of DDR, at a sensible place, overlooking a big part of the surrounding area.Nowadays the castle-ruin is a well-known tourist attraction with various festivities going on through-out the year.Closeby Hanstein castle you will see Klausenhof, one of the most interesting hotels and restaurants I have seen in Germany !www.burghanstein.de

Point Alpha - remains of the Cold War at the wall

by globetrott

POINT ALPHA in Geisa used to be a special place, where at one side the US-Forces had a watchtower and a large army-camp directely at the DDR-border and next to the fortified iron-curtain of the East-Bloc. This camp was built at a place, where the US-Army could easyly watch many activities going on in eastern Germany.point Alpha is a museum nowadays and you may see a part of the old iron-wall around the DDR there, you might see some of the cruel details, that many people have forgotten already, when some people in the former DDR are wishing back their "Good old times of easy life in communiste germany"You may see the dogs on a long leash that were fixed at those few places, where cartrafic was able to get through a stone-fence that would at all other places stop any attempt to break through by car. You may touch the iron-curtain, made of extremely strong fences and you may see the road...

Wartburg - a place of german history

by globetrott

Wartburg - close to Eisenach - is one of the most interesting places to visit in Thueringen. Martin Luther spent some times here and nowadays a part of the castle is also a modern luxury hotel (see my 1st picture !). You can walk freely and without any restrictions during the day around the Wartburg, step up the tower in the back of the castle (1 euro entrancefee) , see the different courts and lovely buildings there, go to the hotel and restaurants and you can even take a look through the window into the "Ritterbad", all of that is free of charge...For the interior of the palace you have to attend a guided tour and the 1st problem will be that you will have to queue up next to the Ritterbad and wait for your time to come. These guided tours will start every 10 or 30 minutes and will take only about 30 tourists each, so I had to wait there for my turn about 50 minutes, standing in the...
