Leuchtenburg Kahla - The well

by elgin99

In the year 1552 four miners from Saalfeld pushed after hard work of some months on water, they had achieved a depth of 80 m. So they maked the second deepest well at that time for Thuringia . The windlass already became taken off 1690 by a big traversing wheel. It should remain almost 200 years into its function. Countless prisoners promoted the water in hard work from the depth of the internal width mountain. A film talks about the hisstory and technology of the fountain during the visit.

Castle Leuchtenburg, Kahla

by elgin99

The little town Kahla has a long tradition of porcelain manufcture. The town lies at 340 kilometer long porcelain street and has only 7 thousand inhabitants. With its green and natural surounding and impressive castle, the Leuchtenburg, in the valley of river Saale the town is recommandably for tourists. Close to town Jena you can reach that place and the castle via Autobahn A4. There are always signs to Kahla and in the town up to Leuchtenburg. The castle itsself has many exhibitions, esp. one unique collection of porcelain, historical rooms, wine cellar, dungeon and museum about porcelain manufacture and the heavy life of porcellain maker families in last century. From the tower you get a fascinating view across the town and wonderful landscape.Double walls, embankment ditch and fortified towers present themselves in a rare originality. There is a Middle Ages spectacle every year at...

Drei Gleichen - three castles

by elgin99

The name for the castle ensemble means " Three of same " should have originated after the tradition because in a May night of 1231 a ball lightning has lit all three castles all at once and they were to be seen like blazing torches far out in the land. Probably, however, one of three castles, Burg Gleichen, gave to the area his name. The castle Burg Gleichen in the old connecting road between Franc and Thuringia presumably originated at the beginning of the 11th century among the counts of Weimar Orlamünde. From the platform of the tower you will have an unique view over the Thuringian scenery. Benches in the castle court and in the entrance to the castle invite to have a rest. In the tower room there is a small exhibit which mediates of interesting piece of information about the Gleichen area. All three castles lie in visibility to each other. In the middle through them is the highway...

... and it was "my school".Christian Gotthilf Salzmann, priest's son from Sömmerda came in 1784 to Schnepfenthal to found an own reformatory. He brought the ideas of the Philantropismus. From many countries of Germany, partly also of the foreign country the pupils came to Schnepfenthal. Almost all significant names of 18th and beginning 19th century are to be found in the visitors' book of the institution. The Salzmannschule is the oldest and only Philantropin which has outlasted the centuries!Who knows that Daimler (Daimler/Benz cars), Siemens (yes, that man) Meyer...

Biggest Baroque Organ in Thuringia

by elgin99

In the church of Waltershausen you see the biggest baroque organ in Thuringia. It was built by Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost till 1730, but was finished by an unknown organ builder. She is about 8 m high and broadly and has more than 2800 whistles which are still the originals to 70%. She is unique also in her sound. From 1995 till May, 1998 the organ was restored by the organ building company of Waltershausen. That concerts therein the church are unique! They mean that on no other organ it is to play and sound Bach better.

Palace Altenstein in Liebenstein-part2, in park

by elgin99

The whole park offers many places of interest. The Torresfelsen: here a predatory knight castle stood since the 7-th century, destroyed in 1733 by fire. Rests of the old castle are still recognizable. Indolino figure: In 1890 this bronze figure was established together with a water basin near the carpet patch in the castle. It is the copy of a boy's statue according to antique model. "God's small picture" (Indolino) Knight's chapel: about 1800, never for Christian service thought, supposed that was used as a meeting place of the Masonic lodge. From there a marvellous panorama.

Cold War victim, the village of Mödlareuth

by weed6886

During the Cold War, Mödlareuth was known as "little Berlin." Before World War II the border between the German states of Thüringen and Bavaria. When East Germany built the fence along the entire border, the fence cut the town in half. Families and friends were separated, living only a few yards apart, but unable to have any contact to one another. When the wall came down in 1989, parts of it were left in place as a memorial to the people who suffered during the Cold War, and now most of the village is a museum. See my Mödlareuth page for more details.
