Behrungen and Deutsch-Deutsches Museum

by weed6886

Behrungen is a small village located on the border between Thueringen and Bavaria. Outside of the village is the Duetsch-deutsches museum, an open-air memorial dedicated to the inter-german border. The guard tower, bunkers, and security fences are all standing as they were pre-1989. Behrungen is a village made up almost completely of half-timber houses that have been fully restored. The village is definately worth a look if you're in the area.

House on the Border, Geisa

by weed6886

The House on the Border in Geisa sits on the the former German-German border. It describes the life of the Grenzers, or border guards, on the East German side of the fence. There are also displays of vehicles, weapons, escape attempts, and the measures taken by the Grenzers to stop escapes. Outside, a section of the original fence and a guard tower are on display. There is also a dispay featuring the Rhoen and it's wildlife. Directly across the border(500meters), is Point Alpha, the US Army's observation post on the former border, also a museum. A ticket bought at the House on the Border is also good for Point Alpha.

Heldburg Castle

by weed6886

This castle, built in the 12th century, dominates the landscape for miles around Bad Colberg. Inside is a small museum documenting the history of the castle. The highlight of the castle is the high observation tower. On a clear day, one is able to see the Thuringer Forest, the Frankenwald, and the Rhoen.

Kloster Vessra

by weed6886

Located in southern Thueringen, this open-air museum is located on the grounds of a former monastery. Various historical buildings from the area were moved here and put on display. A walk through the museum grounds gives a good presentation of life in Thueringen from the middle ages until today. This is the place to get a feel for everyday life in Thueringen.

Town Ohrdruf

by elgin99

Founded 724/725. Some years famous komposer Bach did live and work.During former GDR there were based Russian army with a big area around the town. So the nature there got destroyed very much. Now they began to rebuild nature with a great program of Thuringian state. It is interesting to walk through that former area. Nature came back with special flora and fauna. But the German army using still there a part of old trainee area, very sad for people.Recommended the three churches and the palace inside the town.

Jonastal, history and romance

by elgin99

In a small valley between Crawinkel in the west and Arnstadt in the east, the Jonastal, prisoners of the concentration camp had to dig 25 tunnels in the mussel lime of the training area lying on a plateau Ohrdruf, why is not still known. The precise number of the prisoners who became known here to the deployment of labor is not precise constrainedly, because there are only very fragmentary recordings about the real number. This information sways between 24.695 and approx. 40,000 people. Also for the period of the beginning of the works there are contradictory statements. Because these processes of an austere secrecy were defeated, are in archives only few tips to find in addition. That´s the description of the secret of Jonastal. Also today there search for it.But it´s also a very beautiful area, with rocks and romantic nature.often I drive through that valley and stop to have a walk or...

Historical part of Gotha

by elgin99

Gotha is the capital town of district. One of the oldest towns in Germany. Gotha is one of the cultural and historical centres of Thuringia. Its symbol isFriedenstein Castle, which can be seen for miles around. It is the oldest early baroque fortress structure in Germany and houses world-famous collections (see that tip). The main market is the historical part of that town. Strolling through is worth to take some time oneself.

Lake Tambach-Dietharz

by elgin99

No nice town, that Tambach-Dietharz, also not far from Tabarz. But the area around is beautiful. You can walk, make a tour with mountain bike or climbe at the rock named Falkenstein. That rock and the cottage there (5 kms from town) is a very beautiful place. Famous for climbing tours (like Tabarz climbing tours by itsself, too). Belong the water reservoir through a nice nature.

Ebertswiese, mountain bath lake

by elgin99

Its a very nice walking tour. Close to the Ebertswiese (Ebert meadow) to Rennsteig (run-rise) is on 780 meters height a mountain lake enclosed by rocks, which belongs to the most beautiful bath lakes in Thuringia. The emergence of the lake was caused by the mining industry. With the dismantling of porphyr one is discovered water veins, which fill out today a deep mining industry hole. 6-13 ms deep! There is also a hotel (Ebertswiese).
