Candelaber, Altenbergen

by elgin99

It is the place of the oldest church in Thuringia! The original church, the Johanniskirche, stood on the old mountain. The foundations of this church are received till this day and recognizable. The Altenberger woodcutter Nikolaus Brückner donated 20 guilders which were increased by other donations, so that since 1811 on top on the old mountain, today mountain Johannes called, a 9 meter high column rises, the candelabra, also Bonifatiusleuchte called. Also today services on that hill.

Monastery, Georgenthal

by elgin99

The grain house is one of few buildings preserved from the monastery time. His splendid sandstone rosette is impressive. But also in the monastery ruins one can have with some imagination an image of the former minster. The history of the place begins already in the 12-th century with the construction of a Cistercian monastery. Just 3 centuries the convent life continued, until the cloister was looted at the Easter night 1525 by a rebellion farm army and the monks fled. This was the beginning of the decay. Park around is very beautiful.

Buchenwald

by tessy

Buchenwald was a concentraion camp of the nazis. It is situated just between Erfurt and Weimar. It is now a silent place, but it was awful to remember all what happened there. I feel with all the people who had to be there 60 years ago. When visiting I had more than once tears in my eyes.

Monastery and Palace Reinhardsbrunn

by elgin99

Ludwig der Springer (Ludwig the Jumper), the founder of Wartburg in Eisenach donated in 1085 the monastery Reinhardsbrunn. From 1114 up to his death 1123 Ludwig of der Springer was a monk in his monastery. Because of the beauty surroundings and the wild animals of the forests noble people came to the hunting seat and pleasure palace Reinhardsbrunn. During a big hunt in August, 1845 there was among the guests queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the king of Belgium as well as dukes and princes from completely Central Europe. Up to the begin of the WW II Reinhardsbrunn was summer seat, hunting and guest's house of the ducal family Coburg-Gotha. Here in 1938 Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha married the Prince Gustav Adolf of Schweden. In the Third Reich the arrangement was rented to the Chancellery of the Reich. In 1961 it was opened as a hotel...

Weimar

by DanielF

Weimar is a small town in Thüringen that has played an important role in Germany's history, for it was here that the first Republican constitution of Germany was written, giving birth then to the ill-fated Weimarer Republic. Inj spite of its small size, Weimar is one of the cultural centers of Germany, with an important university and several museums. Goethe, Schiller and many other German poets and writers spent a part of their lives here. It was one of th first East German cities to be fully restored after the reunification and, for this reason, Weimar has been considered as the face of the new Bundesländer.

Weimar

The city of Goethe and Schiller, of old politics, and of the Bauhaus movement (school of design) and much more. Along with lovely streets and building, definitely not a 1-day visit.

We went to Eisenach because we wanted to visit the Wartburg. But we found a nice town, which has much more beautiful places than the Wartburg - here a pic from the market sqare and the townhall.
