One of the rooms in Goethe's house by King_Golo Goethe lived in Weimar for several years. He owned a house at Frauenplan which today is a museum. By the way, this was Goethe's own will - he decreed to have the house kept as a museum in order to make available to the public all his art treasures and more. Nowadays, the public comes in droves to visit his former residence. What is there to see? Probably one of the biggest collection of art ever to be seen in a private building - Goethe collected basically everything, in total roughly 20000 items from all kinds of places and eras. Moreover, he was a mineralogy geek and had a collections of some 16000 minerals. Not to forget his private library... and so on. Many of these things are still on display in the house. So when you go there you walk through more or less the same rooms as back in the early 19th century. This makes the rooms very interesting and you might even feel a little like the great author himself. What I found particularly interesting are the following: *his study room - really nice furnished but interestingly simple *his many commodes with dozens of little drawers - I sure could need one of those in order to be a little more organized! *the structure of the house around a small patio - you actually walk around the patio from room to room Check out my second tip for details on his garden! Leave a Comment Address: FrauenplanDirections: Frauenplan is a square in central Weimar, not far from the market square. Goethe's house is rather plain from the outside and may even be overlooked.

A visit of Goethe's house wouldn't be complete without a relaxing break in his beautiful garden just behind it. The garden is quite large, probably around 50x20m. Several blossoming flower beds make the garden look wonderful in summer. At some places there are benches which may be used for sitting down and perhaps reading a poem of his... I enjoyed the garden as much as the house itself. Leave a Comment Address: FrauenplanDirections: backyard of Goethe's house

The crematory of Buchenwald by King_Golo The cruelest part of Germany's history is no doubt the Nazi era between 1933 and 1945. During that time, numerous concentration camps (KZs) were opened on German territory. Near Weimar, one of the most infamous is found: Buchenwald. Buchenwald was opened in July 1937. In the beginning, it was only a camp for Jews, Homosexuals and others who were regarded asocial by the Nazi regime. Later, most of its inmates were foreigners, e.g. from Eastern European countries. Despite the camp was not built as an extermination camp (like Auschwitz), more than 50.000 people died in Buchenwald. A large number of them died due to incredibly hard labour. Others became victims of SS cruelties or medical experiments. In its 8 years of existence, more than 250000 people were imprisoned in Buchenwald. The camp was liberated by the US army on April 11th, 1945. What is hardly known, however, is that it continued to serve as a prison until 1950. The Soviet occupation forces imprisoned 28000 people here of which 7000 died. Buchenwald was then closed and widely torn down in 1951. In 1958, the GDR government opened the memorial Buchenwald which still exists today. Theaterplatz, Weimar by antistar Central to the Theaterplatz is the monument to Goethe and Schiller, the two great literary giants who made the city their home. The theater behind the statue, the Deutsches Nationaltheater, was founded and directed by Goethe himself, although the current Neoclassical building is actually a modern replacement for the one that was destroyed during World War 2. The Theaterplatz also hosts the Bauhaus Museum, opposite the theater. Leave a Comment

Jakobskirche, Weimar by antistar To the north of the city, slightly away from the main sights, is Jakobskirche. This Baroque church is wonderfully peaceful, and famous for its role as the wedding place of Goethe to Christiane Vulpius. His wife is buried here, along with another of the city's luminaries, Cranach. Leave a Comment

Friends of mine walking along Schillerstraße by King_Golo As usual on my pages, you also find a tip here that tells you to enjoy the town by just walking around! Weimar is a great town for that - all of the sights are within walking distance of the centre (except Buchenwald memorial). The area around market square and theater square (Markt / Theaterplatz) is full of obvious and hidden beauty, be it the houses, the fountains or the street artists who are disguised as Goethe or so. So do it - just start walking through Weimar and you won't be disappointed! Leave a Comment Address: everywhere in the centre

Goethe's garden house by King_Golo This beautiful park used to be Goethe's favourite place to be in Weimar - here, he met his later wife Christiane Vulpius. Moreover, he designed parts of the park himself. The main sight in the park surely is Goethes Gartenhaus (Goethe's garden house) where he also lived for several years. It's a pretty plain house overlooking a large lawn. Unfortunately, we didn't make it inside as they had just closed it. Best to come before 6pm... Leave a Comment Directions: Park an der Ilm

Memorial plaque at Buchenwald by King_Golo You should plan enough time for a visit at Buchenwald. The complex is gigantic and it takes a lot of time to see everything. Even for partial visits only you need at least 2 hours. Your first step at Buchenwald should always be the info point next to the former SS barracks. Here, you can get a leaflet with useful information and audioguides for in-depth explanations. There is also a bookstore. From the info point, several signposted paths lead through the memorial site. We mainly followed the one leading to the prison camp which is where photos and relics of those dark years are exhibited. See the following tips for details. Bauhaus-Museum, Weimar by antistar I think I first heard of the Bauhaus movement as a teenager, when I used to listen to the Arthouse Goth band Bauhaus 1919. Coming to Weimar then, meant the Bauhaus University and museum were prime draws for me. The museum itself is actually quite small, but packs in an amazing number of exhibits for its size, and is definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately you aren't allowed to take pictures inside the museum (a great disappointment for me), hence there is only a shot of the entrance here. Leave a Comment
