Weimar Castle

If you are interested in art and architecture, then the Castle is for you.
You can see both the architecture of the 18th century and the rich collections housed in the Castle: pictures, coins, drawings, etc.
The castle was erected in 1789 and its fourth wing was completed in 1914.
A lot of things are connected with the classisism here.

The Duchess Anna Amalia Library houses a major collection of German literature and historical documents. The library contains almost 1 million books, 2000 medieval and early modern manuscripts, 600 ancestral registers 10 000 maps and 4000 musical scripts.

The treasure of the library is its famous Rococco hall where you can retrace Goethes footsteps.

Don´t miss it. Would be a pity.

Don´t miss this beautiful situated summerhouse of Goethe.

It is located in Ilmpark and you can see Goethes travel bed there which was very modern in his times.

Bought for Goethe by the Duke, the poet lived here until moving to the house on Frauenplan. A place of refuge for Goethe.

National Goethe Museum

Here you can visit an exhibition and Goethes residential house.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived in this Baroque house for almost fifty years.

In June 1782 Goethe moved into this house at Frauenplan because his summerhouse situated in Ilmpark (check summerhouse tip) had become to small for his collections.

One of the treasures is Goethes original carriage in the remise.

Don´t leave Weimar without seeing the National Goethe Museum.

If you haven´t seen it, you haven´t been to Weimar

Opening hours:

April-September

Tue-Sun: 9am-6pm
Sat: 9am-6pm

October-March

Tue-Sun: 9am-4pm

Closed Monday

Please note that for reasons of conservation, the number of visitors is limited.
Best way is to buy your tickets the day before or 2 hours in advance. You may wait an hour after purchasing your tickets. If that´s the case have a cup of coffee or tea in the Lavazza next to the museum.

A multimedia adventure-museum with waxworks, stages, videobeaming and 3D-effects gives you a pictographic survey of the history of Weimar. It is a stunning and entertaining time travel through five millenia, with encounters with greatnesses of minds as Goethe, Schiller, Luther and Duchess Anna Amalia.

Great for starting to explore Weimar and a gorgeous introduction to this overwhelming city.

It's also one of the must-see activities in the city.
The park itself is very attracting, relaxing and inspiring.
I can understand why Johann Wolfgang von Goethe always preferred to stay in this quiet place...

In this house Fridrich Schiller lived in years 1802-1805 since his death. He wrote here his last great dramas: "Messina" and "Wilhelm Tell". Now this is the seat of German Schiller Society and there is too the Schiller Museum. The house (1777) is the oldest building on the street, wich is now a pedestrian zone in Weimar.

The Town Church St. Peter and Paul is called too the "Herder Church", becouse Johann Gottfried Herder worked here as general superintendent 26 years longe. You can see in front of the church his monument. The church was built in years 1498-1500.
