Osterbrunnen - Easter Fountains

by Kathrin_E

Decorating the fountains for Easter is a custom that is most popular in Franconia. The fountains are decorated with green garlands and painted eggs. The largest and most famous Easter fountains can be found in Bieberbach and Heiligenstadt. In recent years the custom has been spreading to other parts of Bavaria and other regions in Germany, for example Saxony, Palatine, Saarland. They have in the meantime also appeared in some villages around Karlsruhe, where my photos have been taken. This rather young custom was created in the late 19th/early 20th century. Do not believe anyone sho tries to tell you that it has pagan, pre-Christian Germanic or Slavic origins in a cult about springs. It does not. This misinterpretation is, just like the equally wrong interpretation of the carnival/Fastnacht as a pagan tradition, a child of the 1920s when Germanic mythology was so much en vogue....

Trabbi & more in "Ostmobil / Dresden"

by globetrott

"Ostmobil" is an excellent collection of old Trabbis and other vintage-cars made in the former GDR / DDR. This collection is shown in the 1st floor (USA:2nd floor) of a shoppinghall in Dresden., called Neustädter Markthalle, that looks nice already by itself with a great architecture.BUT my best memory was the great collection of Trabbants - a part of them is shown on my picture-combination :Lets start on top : "Villa Sachsenruh" on the left is a Trabbi with a tent on the top and it shows the Trabbant from the movie "Go Trabbi go!" - a movie , made shortly after Germany was re-united and it shows such a Trabbi going to Rome.On the right : Trabbi and Camper LC9, beeing just 220 kg in order to be able to be torn by a Trabby. On the righ below : The tarbbi of NVA, the army of the DDR And finally on the left :Trabbi P60 Pick Up. It was planned that way in 1960 by Dr.W.Lang, the constructor of...

Currency Exchange

by Weissdorn

Exchaging currency is nearly obsolete in Germany, since the implementation of Automatic Teller Machines (ATM). Yes, you can sell Dollars, Pounds, and Rupees at major banking offices, but it takes too long, and it can be expensive. You will only find currency exchange booths at airports or major train stations. To be honest with you, it's a drag to cash a traveller's check. You can only do this at a bank. And outside cities it may take awhile. Most restaurants won't accept anything other than cash. Most stores prefer the Eurocard or ATM giro account card, and occassionally accept Visa, AE, Mastercard or Diner's. The Discover Card is too exotic - nobody will accept it. The same applies for credit cards for filling stations (cash Eurocard or ATM giro account cards - some will take major credit cards). So, how di I get some money, when I am the middle of nowhere?ATM is the magic word....

Altbier in Cologne and Düsseldorf

by elbe

If you go to Düsseldorf you have to know that the city is the "Altbier"-area. Altbier is considered Germany's oldest beer style. It's a dark beer especially brewed in the area around Düsseldorf. Never ever order a Kölsch (from Cologne) in Düsseldorf - the waitress may beat you up ;-) - that could also happen if you order an Altbier in Cologne.Cologne and Düsseldorf have an old competition about the importance of the cities. Cologne is bigger and more famous in the world than Düsseldorf which is more poshy and the capital city of the county Northrhine-Westfalia. Probably this "battle" will never end. So never order an Altbier in Cologne or a Kölsch in Düsseldorf.

German Handwriting

by tini58de

Until 1941 the Sütterlin script or German Handwriting was taught in German schools. Many of the older generation still write this way and I can still remember trying to figure out my great-grandmother's letters....Old documents are usually written in this old handwriting, so it can come in quite handy, if you are capable of reading it.The website mentioned below has some good description and some exercises, if you want to learn it!

Local festivals

by tessy

I think nearly each town or village, even if it's very very small, has at least one festival. Usually, the local clubs organize that festival to earn some money. We were lucky when we made a biking tour in the Neckar valley and arrives in Hirschhorn the day, they celebrated the Bachspitzenfest. It was a lot of fun: There was a race of little plastic ducks and the other day a "Floesserstechen". Sorry, don't knoiw the english word. 3 people are in a boat, one has to pull one of the other boat into the water!

What's so bad about it?

by Nemorino

A glance at a map of Germany will reveal that there are hundreds of place names that start with the word "Bad", and you have probably guessed that this does not mean all these places are bad in the sense of awful or terrible. The German word Bad means bath, so these places are all spas. They all have naturally occurring mineral springs which are alleged to have medicinal or curative properties of some sort, so these are places where people come to "take the waters".In the good old days before the German economy started going to hell in a hand basket, any self-respecting German above the age of, say, 32 would try to develop some vague illness which would allow him or her to go off on a three or four week Kur at the expense of their health insurance. That's why lots of German towns attempted to get the word Bad in their names, so they could get a chunk of this lucrative business.Bad Orb...

Cheers! Prost!

by antistar

Germans take their beer very seriously, and that includes the rituals surrounding the drinking of it. I've never toasted the health of my fellow drinkers as often as I have in Germany, and I quickly learned my slack English toasting wasn't up to scratch. There are some strict rules to toasting in Germany, and while you will be forgiven at first, you'll eventually be expected to learn.First of all you must clink your glasses together, say "Prost!" very loudly, and then take a swig of beer immediately. This last bit is very important: putting your glass down on the table and not drinking is bad manners. It's also important to retain eye contact with the person you are toasting with. The English way of staring at the floor or the beer is not acceptable. If there is more than one person in the toast, pick one person and hold eye contact with them.Failure to maintain these customs is supposed...

German CULT TV series - how we grew up :-)

by Trekki

This is about TV series with which we grew up, especially my generation (born 1959 +/- several years). It might make it easier to understand why we are how we are and why we can't take many things of the new-kids-on-the-block generation as serious as they want us to take them serious :-)The most important of all: Raumschiff Orion or Starship Orion:Orion HomepageOrion on youtube:Orion trailer, especially the fantastic dance down in Starlight Casino (the dance is being called Galyxo and is being seen at approx. 1:20 in the video),Launch of a lancet..Then there is famous Augsbuger Puppenkiste: with some examples on youtube:1) From Jim Knopf & Lukas, der Lokomotivführer:Jim Knopf song (this song is REAL cult here, also among the grown-up kids, lol). There is a neww version of this song of 1995 by Dolls United, very much whacks on youtube, but in a really groovy rap version:Eine Insel mit 2...
