Frankfurt and the Main River from the east by Nemorino Here the Frankfurt skyline and the Main River can be seen from an unusual vantage point, namely from the railway bridge leading to Frankfurt East Station. Long-distance trains usually do not cross this bridge, unless they have to be rerouted for some reason. But some of the regional trains do cross here, for instance the Regional Express trains that run once an hour from Frankfurt to Hanau, Aschaffenburg, Würzburg and Nürnberg, and the local trains that serve the north bank of the Main between Frankfurt and Hanau. For a closer look at the twenty-two tallest buildings in the city of Frankfurt am Main, please click here to start the Frankfurt Skyline Countdown, which is now on my Land Hessen page. Quedlinburg by margaretvn Quedlinburg is another lovely little town with half timbered houses, which date from various times. The oldest is a little house - Wordgasse 3 which dates from about 1400. It is actually the oldest surviving timber frame house in Germany. The history of the town is closly linked to the convent that was established there by Emperor Otto I and his mum St. Mathilde in 936. On a hill above the town is the Stiftkirche St Servatius built 1017-1129. The crypt (which belonged to the previous church ) contains the tombs of Emperor Henry and his wife. The centre is a walking area and there are several very nice places for coffee. There is a cafe which is actually built in 7 houses! Leave a Comment

Wörthspitze by Nemorino Here at the Wörthspitze in Höchst, a district in the western part of Frankfurt, is where the Nidda River flows into the Main. It the background you can catch a glimpse of the two very different faces of Höchst. On the right there is a lovely Old Town (better than anything downtown Frankfurt has to offer) and in the center of the photo you can see the chimneys of an extensive industrial area where the Hoechst Chemical Company used to be before it was smashed by globalization. (What's left of Hoechst is now a part of Aventis, if I have understood correctly.) Leave a Comment

Ship repairs in Erlenbach by Nemorino In Erlenbach on the Main River there is a company call the Bavarian Shipbuilding Company (formerly Schellenberger) which has been building and repairing commercial river craft since 1652. The photo was taken from Wörth, on the other side of the river. Leave a Comment

The Old Town in Frankfurt-Höchst by Nemorino The Old Town in Höchst has been lovingly restored. In the summer there are several outdoor restaurants that serve good food and drinks in a very picturesque setting. To get to Höchst by train, take the S1 in the direction of Wiesbaden or the S2 in the direction of Niedernhausen. From the central station, Höchst is the third stop, after Griesheim and Nied. Two smaller rivers, the Sinn and the Fränkische Saale, flow into the Main here at Gemünden, a town of some 11,000 inhabitants. I have cycled through through here three times thus far, once along the Main from Würzburg and the other two times through the Spessart hills and down the Sinn Valley, as shown in the Off the Beaten Path tips on my Bad Orb page. Second photo: This part of the Main River, below Gemünden, as seen from the train in April 2007 -- with cyclists on the trail by the river bank. Leave a Comment

Justinuskirche by Nemorino This 1200 year old church on Justinusplatz in the Old Town of Frankfurt-Höchst is often used for chamber music concerts and recitals. The acoustics are perhaps a bit tricky, but intriguing. I can remember one concert in which the mezzo-soprano's voice sounded like it was floating up around the ceiling somewhere. But that didn't detract from the music, on the contrary. The church is open in the afternoons Monday through Wednesday from 12:00 to 14:00 and Thursday through Sunday from 15:00 to 17:00. The Main joins the Rhine at Mainspitze by Nemorino Here at Mainspitze the Main River comes in from the right, where the motorboat is, and joins the Rhine. The city of Mainz is over to the left, and the city of Wiesbaden is further up the Rhine on the right-hand side. The Mainspitze is well worth a slight detour while cycling, because of the great views and the very very fresh air. Leave a Comment

The Main River near Aschaffenburg by Nemorino Here is a typical scene on the Main River, a short ways upstream from Aschaffenburg. The cycling trails along the Main River have been very much upgraded in recent years. They are now mostly paved, well signposted and generally free of automobile traffic. Leave a Comment
