* Dreilander Point - a little spot near Aachen where the borders of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium intersect. There's a concrete post in the ground marking the point, and we walked around it saying: 'If this is Tuesday, this must be Belgium, no Germany, no the Netherlands ... and so on!' And it was Tuesday when I was there! * St Nikolai Church in Hamburg. All that remains of this once beautiful building is the spire and some bricks. It is so sad to see what war can do to such a place. The display in the cellar of its history and what is planned for its future, is both eye-opening and tear-jerking. It moved me to tears. Bielefeld is not exactly popular with tourists, nevertheless I decided to include it in my travel guide. It is not so bad after all, though it is sometimes used as a synonym for a totally dull and boring city. It will never become a major tourist destination in my lifetime, but even a dull city can have its good sides! If you go there, look for - the Crüwell House (one of the few remaining renaissance buildings, due to WW2 bombings) - the Old Town Hall (not so old after all, built 1904) - Sparrenburg Castle (on a hill within the city limits - good view on the city) - Kunsthalle (art museum) - some interesting temporary exhibitions - the "Bauernhaus-Museum", an Open Air museum with old farm buildings and a windmill - the small zoo in Olderdissen. Apart from that, Bielefeld is - rather close to the region "Ostwestfalen-Lippe" and the cities of Bückeburg (great renaissance palace), Rinteln, Stadthagen and Havixbeck (nice Old Town). - to the the Arminius monument (dedicated to a Germanic tribal leader who battled the Romans, built in the 19th century), - to another impressive patrotic monument (Kaiser Wilhelm-Denkmal) in the city of Porta Westfalica - to the geological monument "Externsteine" and the surrounding National Reserve with good hiking possibilities. The most remarkable thing about Bielefeld seems to be the so-called "Bielefeld Conspiracy". There are people that claim that this city doesn`t exist for real. The reason is unclear to me, but there is an explanation that is because Bielefeld is barely recognizable from Google Earth.

Check out information on Heligoland which is a small island near Hamburg,Germany.I thoroughly enjoyed my trip there with my young son about 12 years back!It is a very cute, sailing town with duty free shopping, relaxed atmosphere.I loved the layout of the island. I also found the whole atmosphere very relaxed inspite of it being a duty free place. Not many know about it outside of Germany.

Former East Germany has also a lot of jewels that do not fit into the grey image that we have about that part of the country. Leave a Comment

Generally, travelers are too regimented and too afraid of wandering off the beaten path. For example, we celebrated Pentacost by joining a procession after Mass at a small Bavarian church in Rupberg. Then, after Mass we joined the parishioners at the annual festival--brats and beer and fellowship. Leave a Comment

Germany has great Pizza parlors, but pferroni is not pepperoni, it is a green pepper and the dark olives have pits in them. Beware!! Leave a Comment
