    Ettal - a great monastery in Bavaria
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ettal is a small village in the very south of Bavaria, close to Garmisch Partenkirchen, Schloss Linderhof and Oberammergau, and it is a perfect place to go to on a daytrip from Munich.
    In 1330 the monastery was founded and rebuilt in baroque style during the 17th century.
    Do not miss the great interior, with excellent paintings on the ceiling and the walls, and a lot of golden ornaments, that make this church really special.
    There is a big parking right in front of the monastery that may be visited freely any time during the day.

    There are more infos and pics about it on my Ettal-page - see the link below !

    Ettal is about 60 Km south of Munich, and 10 Km north of Garmisch Partenkirchen !

    Wernigerode....
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have visited Wernigerode quite a few times now and all have been amazingly enjoyable expriences. Wernigerode is situated in the Eastern part of the Harz mountains and is the northern terminus of the narrow guage railway which is such a treat. Taking the steam train to Mt Brocken (the highest peak in Northern Germany) is such a unique experience that can be enjoyed year round and the change in scenery between the two is truly remarkable.

    Wernigerode is also a quaint town where you can enjoy the half-timbered housing and it's wonderful castle which houses an interesting medieval museum. It is a town that is easily accessible and a joy to walk around as it is not so big.

    Alatsee - for the great landscape & Nazi-mysteries
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alatsee is a rather small alpine lake, about 7 Km west of Füssen and the only way to get there is by walking or taking a horsecarriage from Bad Faulbach in summertime.
    The water on the top of Alatsee is crystall clear and a tiny river is flowing through it, but in the depth of about 10 meters the water gets a different density and you will find plenty of old trunks of trees and leaves in the water there.
    Below these trees you cannot see anything in the water, but the lake has a depth of several hundred meter at certain places.
    I was working in the hotel there in 1990, and at that time Prof. Fricke came with his research-submarine to search for relicts of WW II and Nazi-treasures.
    All he found was lots of fake British Pounds, printed by the Nazis and finally thrown into the lake at the end of the war.
    There are some more infos about that lake and its history on the web-page below.

    Baroque garden in Blankenburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Blankenburg is a little town near the Harz mountains with a number of half timbered houses and a 18th century castle high on the hill overlooking the town. There is a lovely Baroque garden which was laid out as part of a plan to find work to people with no jobs. The garden is lovely and it climbs up the hill towards the castle so as you walk through it you get lovely views. The old towen is small and is being well restored. Nearby is the Teufelsmaur (Devils wall) which is a really strange shaped sandstone cliff. It is 4 kilometres long with really sharp tops and it attracts many climbers. It can be seen from the road at several places and is a wierd unearthly sort of place - probably why it got its name.

    Wolfenbüttel....

  • A steet scene in 'Wolfy' - Germany
    A steet scene in 'Wolfy'

    I am convinced that Wolfenbüttel is one of the loveliest but seemingly almost forgotten towns in Germany. It's motto is 'take your time' which I find funny because thats exactly what you tend to do when visiting 'Wolfy' (please note that this affectionate way of referring to the town is not common amongst the native population and is probably just some Australiana creeping into my text - sorry!!!) It emerged from WWII virtually unscathed which is a miracle considering the mess that was made of the rest of this area in Germany.

    Situated just about one hour south of Hannover in the state of Lower Saxony it is beautiful little town to visit. I highly reccommend a visit to get a feel of the 'real' Germany. You will not find loads of tourists and you will not hear a word of English spoken which allows you to literally soak up the culture. It is full of beautiful half-timbered housing and its library was once even referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.

    Wolfenbuettel was probably settled in the 10th Century although first mention was in document dated back to 1118. From 1283 it was the preferred residence of a succession of Guelphic Dukes before the Royal seat moved to Braunschweig in about 1753.

    The townhall of Fuessen
  • Tip Rating:
  • The townhall of Fuessen is another place in Fuessen that you should not miss, when you are interested in great architecture: it has a nice innercourt, but much more unique is the hall with great frescos that you will find when entering the big gate from the pedestrian area and walk straight ahead and enter the building there. Dont hesitate to step in, the whole building is used for administration-purposes and tourists are welcome there as well.
    Take a look at my 2nd pic, there is the entrance at the right, you step in there, walk to the opposite entrance inside the innercourt and that is where you will find these great frescos !

    State: Hesse(n);
    nearest airport: Frankfurt International.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you like Art Nouveau, you should make a short trip to Darmstadt and wander around on Mathildenhöhe, the town’s centre for beautiful architecture and exhibitions of this period.
    Landgrave Ernst-Ludwig has created a place for design early 20th century, which attracted a lot of famous Art Nouveau designers and architects. 4 exhibitions took place in these years, and luckily, most of the buildings have survived the heavy bombing of Darmstadt in WWII.
    A lot more Art Nouveau buildings are spread in town, a bit hidden for example the house in Moosbergstrasse (see pic), along Rhönring and in Martinsviertel.
    For visitors, which like to stay a bit longer, the town has nice parks, such as Rosenhöhe with a beautiful rose dome (see pic), a Russian Chapel also on Mathildenhöhe (as Alexandra of Darmstadt was married to Tsar Nicolas II).
    In the middle of town, there is a small rococo garden (Prinz Georg Garten) very beautifully kept by the gardeners, with an interesting garden house (pic).
    If you happen to visit Frankfurt (for private or business), it definitely pays to get on a train to Darmstadt for a day (20 minutes train drive).
    As I live here, I have quite a collection of infos so far. If you want to visit and need infos not yet given, just drop me a mail.
    From a car viewpoint high above the Saar river, between Saarbruecken and Trier, one can look out over the wooded promontory of the Montclair loop. Here you can see how deeply the Saar river has cut into the sweeping Hunsruck mountains. The river forms a deep horseshoe indicating the river loop was there before the slow mountain uplift occured.
    Germany is full of little gems to explore and discover. Here, in the hills just off the Frankfurt-Hannover-Hamburg autobahn, the E4, not far south of Kassel, is the little town of Homberg/Eftze. The town is crammed full of half-timbered houses, atmospheric charm and lies below the castle ruins above on the Homberg. Martin Luther spent some time up here at the castle and so can you.
