NATIONALPARK BERCHTESGADEN

High in the mountains above the Konigsee in the extreme southeast corner of Bavaria, is Germany's greatest national park. Here you can walk in the largest area of wild alpine terrain within Germany. The cable car on the Jenner allows hikers to gain ground the easy way. Climbing out of the Konigsee or Obersee or from the more westerly sited Wimbachtal entail a little more work. The vast Steinernes Meer/Rocky Sea is another example of the the high mountain karstic plateaus that can be found on the Untersberg - just north of Berchtesgaden - and both the Dachstein and the Todtesgebirge - to the east in neighboring Austria. This is some of the best mountain landscapes to be found in Germany.

    Fuessen - alte Stadtapotheke
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most people just go to Fuessen in order to see Neuschwanstein - castle, but that is a pity, because the town itself is worth exploring as well !Alte Stadtapotheke (the old pharmacy)has most probably the most beautiful fassade of Füssen. You will find it in the pedestrian area.
The design of the 17th century follows similar fassades in Italy and gives you the feeling to see real stones and structures - but in fact the walls are completely flat.
The interior is worth seeing as well, because of the old wooden furniture and you will see many things that are typical for an old pharmacy : see what kind of things are hanging down from the ceiling : in former times such old animal-bones were used in order to create remedies, or at least it was pretended that these rare items were needed for the secret recepees of their remedies.
Fuessen is in the south of Bavaria, a perfect daytrip by car or by train from Munich !

Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche is just a few meters from the townhall of Fuessen and it dates back to the year 1748. Take a look at its interesting facade and dont hesitate to get inside in order to see its ornate and interesting baroque interior. It was built by Franz Karl Fischer in the years 1748-49.
The fresco at the ceiling is quite interesting, showing the 4 continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America at each corner. In the centre : the 7 sacraments (see my 4th picture)
Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche was built as the church for the hospital and you will be able to enter it freely and without restrictions during the day !

Landshut is a place that you really should not miss to to choose for a stop-over.
On my photographs you will see :
    1) the townsquare of Landshut with lots of lovely baroque buildings
    2) Burg Trausnitz is an interesting castle high above the city of Landshut. The oldest parts of the castle are dating back to the year 1204 and for several centuries it used to be the seat of the bavarian dukes.
You may visit the castle by a guided tour between April and September, daily 09.00a.m. -06.00p.m.
    3) The townhall of Landshut consists of 3 different gothic buildings, that were combined by a neo-gothic facade in 1861. The most precious room of the townhall is the Rathausprunksaal , the ornate audience-hall where the bride and the groom of the historic wedding of 1475 had their first dance togeather.
    4) Pappenberger Haus is another interesting building with a unique facade. The building - opposite of the townhall - was built in the year 1405 and is an excellent excample for a gothic house of a wealthy citizen
    5) Halle der Illusionen (hall of illusions) is one of the many highlights of Burg Trausnitz. This wall is completely flat, but by the way it is painted with fine frescos you get the feeling to see 3-dimensional decorations, paintings, doors etc.
_________________________From Munich you drive northwards on the highway in Direction Deggendorf and Passau. About 70 km north of Munich you take the exit for Landshut. There is a perfect system of big car-parks in and around the city and the best are the private parkings - there you pay 3 Euros for the whole day ( 5 Euros on sundays !) same price applies for motorhomes, and you may also stay there over night without paying an extra fee.
Beware of the Parking-house !! inside it is really narrow streets and narrow parking-bays, and you have to pay them hour by hour!!
Landshut has a trainstation as well !

    Kassel...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Wasserspiel and Herkules - Germany
    The Wasserspiel and
    Herkules
    by Colzy

The is a wonderful city on the River Fulda, located in the heart of Germany. There are many thingsto do in this wonderful town which boasts more than 63 % of parks and woodlands so there are some idyllic walks.

Perhaps the most famous thing in Kassel is 'Herkules' which stands about 600m above sea level and has awesome 360 degree views. If you happen to time your visit to Kassel between April and November then you can witness the amazing Wasserspiel which starts from this point. On Wednesday and Sunday's at 2:30pm one can see the water cascade down the hill culminating in a 52m high fountain of water at the bottom in a very dramatic fashion.

I was told that the ruler at the time sold something like 20 000 of its citizens to the British to fight in the American war of Independance and used the proceeds to build 'Herkules'. I cant exactly say that I agree with his method of raising cash but it is a very impressive result!

Mespelbrunn - Das Wirtshaus im Spessart
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schloss Mespelbrunn is without doubt one of the most beautiful water-castles in Germany and at the restaurant next to that castle one of the most famous comedies of the german Filmindustry was filmed :
Das Wirtshaus im SpessartSpessart is the name of the landscape around the castle , and the Spessart is mainly well known as Germany's largest area of woods, an area that was quite spooky in the old times with plenty of robbers waiting for their victims...
These robbers are also part of the story of the movie "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart"
Schloss Mespelbrunn was hidden in the wide woods of Spessart and it was that way completely "overseen" during WW I and WW II. The castle is privately owned and may be visited only with a guided tour !
Photography is forbidden inside the castle, this is why I did not take the tour. (and I was in a hurry anyway)
The castle is open end of March till 1st week of November:
    Mon-Sat.: 09.00a.m.-12.00noon + 01.00p.m.-05.00p.m.
    Sundays and holidays: 09.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.
the regular entrance-fee is 3,50 Euros and 2 Euros for students & children

___________________________Mespelbrunn is not far from Aschaffenburg, at the very north-west-end of Bavaria. When driving on the highway A3 between Wuerzburg and Aschaffenburg, you will have sign-posts for Mespelbrunn-castle already on the highway !
The exit is called Weibersbrunn and once that you have left the highway, you will have to go through wide woods and drive about 10km in order to get to the castle !
There you will have a big parking in a distance of 300 meters to the castle & the famous "Wirtshaus im Spessart".
    Parking-fees are 2 Euros per day / 3 Euros for a motorhome.

Here is a typical scene along the Main River downstream from Wertheim.

The things in the foreground that look like big mushrooms are actually moorings that the river barges can tie onto if they want to stop here for the night.

Wieskirche is a rather large church, standing alone in the landscape surrounded by a few houses only.
It all started with a miracle in 1740 and since then lots of pilgrims come to this lovely church, that is even a bit over-loaded with ornaments, paintings and frescoes.
The church is open daily from 08.00 a.m. till 07.00 p.m.
There is no admission fee, but a donation is expected for the renovation of the church, and you may decide upon the amount by yourself, and put it into a large box at the entrance.
When driving by car from Munich towards Fuessen, you will pass by it, it is just 6 Km off the regular road.
_____________________Wies has a busstation directely at the church. Take BUS Nr. 9651 from FÜSSEN to Weilheim i.OB ( Weilheim in Oberbayern)
For the exact schedule you may have a look on this web-page and use the destination "Wieskirche" and NOT "Wies"...

The Linden-Museum in Stuttgart is one of the finest ethnology museums in the world. As this is a highly specialized subject that will not interest alot of people it does not seem to receive too many visitors. There were hardly any when I was there. This is a shame because the museum which features excellent exhibits on cultures throughout the world lives up to its billing. The museum is located in an attractive 18th century palace that is also quite interesting.
The museum is located at Hegelplatz 1 and is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and until 8pm on Wednesday. It costs 3 Euros to enter. Sadly the website listed below is only in German

Rottenbuch - on your way from Munich to Fuessen

Rottenbuch - a great church in
    Bavaria
    by globetrott, 4 more photos
    Send Photo to a Friend
The Augustinian monastery of Rottenbuch was founded in 1073 A.D. and the church was rebuilt in the 15th century. During the 17th century all the signs of the gothic architecture were rebuilt and changed into a Baroque interior, and that's the way it still looks today.
Rottenbuch is just a tiny village of a few buildings today and nobody would expect to see such a wonderful church there, but make a stop and see it for yourself : No restrictions to enter this church during the day, photography is no problem as well !
This church is overloaded with ornaments and paintings on all the walls and ceilings, and the gothic elements are to be seen only at a few places now.
Johann Schmuzer and his son Franz-Xaver rebuilt the church in Baroque style from 1737-1745
    ___________________
Rottenbuch is just a rather small village between Schongau and Oberammergau and just 20km from Wieskirche.
Simply follow road Nr. 23 from Schongau and you will pass by the church, that you may see already from far away by it's funny spire.
From OUTside the church looks just like any other church of a small village, BUT have a look INside as well !!!
