 | Germany Off the Beaten Path | Tips 51 - 60 of 540 | | Franziskanerkirche is my favorite church in Berchtesgaden and it was built in the year 1488 for the Augustinian-nuns and was changed to a franciscan church and monastery in 1695. In 1822 the monastery was given up and the building was first used by the bavarian ministery of justice and recently it became the seat of the National Park Berchtesgaden. Normally you may see the interior of Franziskanerkirche freely and without restrictions during the day, it is quite interesting to see the gothic construction with a row of columns in the middle of the church, deviding the church into 2 halfs, both of wich are equally decorated. Normally you would expect a large nave in the centre and columns at both sides, but here it is different ! Leave a Comment

Hessenthahl is a small village next to Mespelbrunn and it is famous and well known for its lovely pilgrim-church and the great altar-sculptures made by Tilman Riemenschneider. This church in Hessenthal-Mespelbrunn is a combination of 3 different churches and it does not at all look very special from outside. There is a small chapel with the famous sculpture of Holy Mary, the pilgrim-church dating back to the year 1293 and the modern parish-church of Hessenthal-Mespelbrunn that includes some of the famous wooden sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. The famous altar made by Tilman Riemenschneider in 1485 is hidden inside the modern parish-church, just opposite of the main entrance (see my 1st and 2nd pic !). I almost did not pay it any attention, until I saw it mentioned in the small booklet, that I bought for 2 Euros in the church. You may get inside the churches and chapels freely and without restrictions. Photography is no problem ! The church is almost at the beginning of the village, when you arrive by the Autobahn / highway A3 and leave at exit Weibersbrunn. Leave a Comment

The village of Geiselwind is about 200 meters off the highway A3, and about halfway between Wuerzburg and Nuernberg / Nuremberg. The exit is also called "Geiselwind" This village is a great place for a stop-over with a lot of lovely half-timbered houses, it is close to the highway, but still in quite a distance, so you will not hear any of its noises there. Take a walk through the village, plenty of these houses are quite old and perfectely restored. You will find 2 petrol-stations there, a super-market and various cheap hotels. Prices are low and so it might make sense to do your shopping there instead of the expensive petrol-stations along the highway. Freizeitland Geiselwind is one of the best-known recreation-parks in Germany or at least in Bavaria. You will see it from the highway A3 and it offers great events and fun for the whole family. There is an area, where you may see Flamingos, apes, storchs, parrots, owls etc. There will be merry-go-rounds for the smaller children and roller-coasters for the others. A whole day might not be enough to enjoy all of the attractions there. Freizeitland geiselwind is open mainly in summer : end of March till the end of october: 09.00a.m.-05.00p.m. May till August even till 06.00p.m. You may get in untill 1 hour before closing-time ! Go to Geiselwind when you have your birthday: NO entrance-fee for you visitors under 1,10 m are free visitors taller than 1,10 m pay 16 Euro taller than 1,40 m pay 19 Euros Leave a Comment

Inside the park of Linderhof palace you will find some special buildings that were favorite places of "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria : 1) Hundinghütte looks like a simple hut from outside, but inside it has a certain luxury. Hundinghütte is a remote little hut at the east-end of the castle-park. It was built at a small lake and King Ludwig very often spent the whole day and even some nights there, living the "simple life" like one of the persons in his beloved legends and epics. There is a huge artificial tree with a chandelier and a fireplace on a table , surrounded by benches covered with the skin of bears. (on the right, in the back of my 3rd pic ) Under the chandelier there are large horns that the king used to drink of. Gurnemanz-Klause (my 4th pic) is a small church that was built by a monch at a remote place inside the woods - according to one of the stories that King Ludwig liked so very much. So he decided to build such a small church inside the park as well and he used the area also for performances of special scenes of operas. And his servants sometimes had to remove all the snow, and plant flowers especially for this one performance, and make sure, no animals will eat these "early" flowers, before the king saw his performance there... On my last picture : This small church is 200 meters east from the castle. It was built in the style of Bavarian alpine churches, but much smaller than normally. You may not enter the church, but have a look inside through a window. __________________________Linderhof palace is about 17 Km west of Oberammergau and Ettal. There is a fee to park your car ( 2,- € a day ) and the parking is big enough for some hundred of cars. Leave a Comment

Wieskirche is a rather large church, standing alone in the landscape surrounded by a few houses only. It all started with a miracle in 1740 and since then lots of pilgrims come to this lovely church, that is even a bit over-loaded with ornaments, paintings and frescoes. The church is open daily from 08.00 a.m. till 07.00 p.m. There is no admission fee, but a donation is expected for the renovation of the church, and you may decide upon the amount by yourself, and put it into a large box at the entrance. When driving by car from Munich towards Fuessen, you will pass by it, it is just 6 Km off the regular road. _____________________Wies has a busstation directely at the church. Take BUS Nr. 9651 from FÜSSEN to Weilheim i.OB ( Weilheim in Oberbayern) For the exact schedule you may have a look on this web-page and use the destination "Wieskirche" and NOT "Wies"... The Augustinian monastery of Rottenbuch was founded in 1073 A.D. and the church was rebuilt in the 15th century. During the 17th century all the signs of the gothic architecture were rebuilt and changed into a Baroque interior, and that's the way it still looks today. Rottenbuch is just a tiny village of a few buildings today and nobody would expect to see such a wonderful church there, but make a stop and see it for yourself : No restrictions to enter this church during the day, photography is no problem as well ! This church is overloaded with ornaments and paintings on all the walls and ceilings, and the gothic elements are to be seen only at a few places now. Johann Schmuzer and his son Franz-Xaver rebuilt the church in Baroque style from 1737-1745 ___________________ Rottenbuch is just a rather small village between Schongau and Oberammergau and just 20km from Wieskirche. Simply follow road Nr. 23 from Schongau and you will pass by the church, that you may see already from far away by it's funny spire. From OUTside the church looks just like any other church of a small village, BUT have a look INside as well !!! Leave a Comment

Landshut is a place that you really should not miss to to choose for a stop-over. On my photographs you will see : 1) the townsquare of Landshut with lots of lovely baroque buildings 2) Burg Trausnitz is an interesting castle high above the city of Landshut. The oldest parts of the castle are dating back to the year 1204 and for several centuries it used to be the seat of the bavarian dukes. You may visit the castle by a guided tour between April and September, daily 09.00a.m. -06.00p.m. 3) The townhall of Landshut consists of 3 different gothic buildings, that were combined by a neo-gothic facade in 1861. The most precious room of the townhall is the Rathausprunksaal , the ornate audience-hall where the bride and the groom of the historic wedding of 1475 had their first dance togeather. 4) Pappenberger Haus is another interesting building with a unique facade. The building - opposite of the townhall - was built in the year 1405 and is an excellent excample for a gothic house of a wealthy citizen 5) Halle der Illusionen (hall of illusions) is one of the many highlights of Burg Trausnitz. This wall is completely flat, but by the way it is painted with fine frescos you get the feeling to see 3-dimensional decorations, paintings, doors etc. _________________________From Munich you drive northwards on the highway in Direction Deggendorf and Passau. About 70 km north of Munich you take the exit for Landshut. There is a perfect system of big car-parks in and around the city and the best are the private parkings - there you pay 3 Euros for the whole day ( 5 Euros on sundays !) same price applies for motorhomes, and you may also stay there over night without paying an extra fee. Beware of the Parking-house !! inside it is really narrow streets and narrow parking-bays, and you have to pay them hour by hour!! Landshut has a trainstation as well ! Leave a Comment

Schloss Mespelbrunn is without doubt one of the most beautiful water-castles in Germany and at the restaurant next to that castle one of the most famous comedies of the german Filmindustry was filmed : Das Wirtshaus im SpessartSpessart is the name of the landscape around the castle , and the Spessart is mainly well known as Germany's largest area of woods, an area that was quite spooky in the old times with plenty of robbers waiting for their victims... These robbers are also part of the story of the movie "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart" Schloss Mespelbrunn was hidden in the wide woods of Spessart and it was that way completely "overseen" during WW I and WW II. The castle is privately owned and may be visited only with a guided tour ! Photography is forbidden inside the castle, this is why I did not take the tour. (and I was in a hurry anyway) The castle is open end of March till 1st week of November: Mon-Sat.: 09.00a.m.-12.00noon + 01.00p.m.-05.00p.m. Sundays and holidays: 09.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. the regular entrance-fee is 3,50 Euros and 2 Euros for students & children ___________________________Mespelbrunn is not far from Aschaffenburg, at the very north-west-end of Bavaria. When driving on the highway A3 between Wuerzburg and Aschaffenburg, you will have sign-posts for Mespelbrunn-castle already on the highway ! The exit is called Weibersbrunn and once that you have left the highway, you will have to go through wide woods and drive about 10km in order to get to the castle ! There you will have a big parking in a distance of 300 meters to the castle & the famous "Wirtshaus im Spessart". Parking-fees are 2 Euros per day / 3 Euros for a motorhome. Leave a Comment

The townhall of Fuessen is another place in Fuessen that you should not miss, when you are interested in great architecture: it has a nice innercourt, but much more unique is the hall with great frescos that you will find when entering the big gate from the pedestrian area and walk straight ahead and enter the building there. Dont hesitate to step in, the whole building is used for administration-purposes and tourists are welcome there as well. Take a look at my 2nd pic, there is the entrance at the right, you step in there, walk to the opposite entrance inside the innercourt and that is where you will find these great frescos ! Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche is just a few meters from the townhall of Fuessen and it dates back to the year 1748. Take a look at its interesting facade and dont hesitate to get inside in order to see its ornate and interesting baroque interior. It was built by Franz Karl Fischer in the years 1748-49. The fresco at the ceiling is quite interesting, showing the 4 continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America at each corner. In the centre : the 7 sacraments (see my 4th picture) Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche was built as the church for the hospital and you will be able to enter it freely and without restrictions during the day ! ____________________Fuessen is in Bavaria, a great and easy full-daytrip from Munich by car or by train Leave a Comment
