Burghausen in Bavaria is well known for its Jazz-sessions and for the largest castle in Germany. My favorite building there on the baroque townsquare is the townhall on my main photograph ! the main attraction is the castle high above the town, it is almost large like a small village with lots of different buildings, churches, gardens and museums, all of them surrounded with a fortified wall, it really looks impressive ! Burghausen is directely at the bavarian border to Austria, about halfway between Salzburg and Braunau. Leave a Comment

Mechanisches Musikkabinett in Ruedesheim by globetrott, 4 more photos Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett in Ruedesheim is one of the largest collections of automatic music-instruments and musicboxes in Europe. Go inside, even when you will have not enough time to see the museum, the exhibits shown here on my page are shown in the entrance hall, BEFORE you get to the cashier. You will find Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett inside of Broemserhof ,a lovely castle with an interesting half-timbered facade, not far away from the famous Drosselgasse. I did not dare to put in some coins, but I may imagine that most of the machines are still working fine that way, and performances of these musicboxes are also part of every guided tour through the museum. The vintage-car, that you will see in my pics belongs to that museum and you will see it driving around Ruedesheim quite often ! The entry fee is 5,50 Euros and 3 Euros for students and children. Burg Lahneck is a really interesting castle, built high above the place, where the river Lahn flows into the river Rhine. The castle dates back to 1245 and you can visit it with a guided tour only. Tours are daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m. between easter and end of October. Unfortunately I did not go inside, as for the next tour I would have to have waited 1,5 hours :-(( Just a few meters from the castle, you may see a great restaurant with a lovely terrace facing the Rhine-valley and with a great view on castle Kapellen-Stolzenfels, at the other side of the Rhine-valley. There is also a camping-site close to Burg Lahneck. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Lahneck is in the village of Lahnstein, on the right bank of the river Rhine. Lahnstein is about 5km upstream from Koblenz Leave a Comment

Muenster-Maifeld is a small town that I found accidentally when driving from the Mosel-valley to Burg Eltz. The small town has around 8000 inhabitants and you will find a lot of interesting half-timbered houses and a church that looks a bit strange and very un-usual, also inside ! The church-tower looks more like a fortified castle-tower and the church has many great details inside as well, - see my photographs 3-5 . You may enter the church freely and without restrictions during the day, a large parking is next to it and free of charge ! --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Muenster-Maifeld is on the way from Hatzenport in the Mosel-valley to Eltz castle - about 12 km off the river Mosel. Schloss von der Leyen in Kobern-Gondorf by globetrott, 4 more photos Kobern-Gondorf is a small village in the Mosel-valley not far from Koblenz and it has some great castles to offer : One of them is in my main photograph, it is called " Schloss von der Leyen " , an old castle, and there was no other way to build a road, than to lead it through the innercourt of the old castle. You may get out of your car and take a look around that castle, it has plenty of great details to be seen. Not far from "Schloss an der Leyen" is another castle, Schloss Liebig (the small pic of my picture-combination). Karden-Treis or Treis-Karden is a small village about 25km downstream from Cochem in the Mosel-valley. My favorite building in Karden-Treis is this old building that dates back to the year 1562. At that time it was the seat of the "Schultheis of Kurtrier" Schultheis was an expression for a judge and "Kurtrier" was the old province belonging to the city of Trier. The house is situated next to the trainline and maybe for all the many vibrations every day the foundations of the building sank partly down a bit and you have the feeling the house is falling apart. Karden is situated on the left bank of the river Mosel / Moselle and it has its own train-station and also a bridge across the river to the village of Treis with 2 castle-ruins. see Karden-Treis on the link below ! Kröv is a tiny village at the left bank of the Mosel-valley and it has some great half-timbered houses, BUT mainly it is well known for a funny name for one of its great wines : Kröver N@ckt@rsch There is a little story about that funny name, explained on the bottle : Once upon a time the children of the village went down into the cellar in order to drink some wine ! They were caught, and their n@cked @ss had to pay for it .... a n@cked @ss is a Nacktarsch in German The word @rsch is really very rude, and you certainly should never, never use it ! but when you quote the name of the wine and bring it home as a souvenir, everybody is smiling and having fun also because of the funny label ! When driving through Kröv you will see many places, where the vintners have windows, where you can taste the wine and buy the bottles of the famous wine (see my 3rd pic) see Kröv here on the map by www.mosel-reisefuehrer.de or read more about it in my Kröv-page, the link is below ! POINT ALPHA is a small place (next to the small village of Geisa, about 40 km west of Eisenach), where the US-Forces had a watchtower and an army-camp directely at the DDR / GDR-border and next to the fortified iron-curtain of the East-Bloc. This camp was built at a place, where the US-Forces could easyly watch many activities going on in eastern Germany. Point Alpha is a museum nowadays and you will see a part of the iron-wall around the DDR there, you might see some of the cruel details, that many people have forgotten already, when some people in the former DDR are wishing back their "Good old times of easy life in communiste germany" You may see the dogs on a long leash that were fixed at those few places, where cartrafic was able to get through a stone-fence that would at all other places stop any attempt to break through by car. You may touch the iron-curtain, made of extremely strong fences and you may see the road made for the troops to drive along the borderline... While the area of the former iron curtain is to be seen freely and without restrictions any time of the day or night, the former US-camp is open for visitors only a restricted time : Drive from Eisenach to Point Alpha on the road B84 ! The US-camp-museum of Point Alpha is open April-October : daily 09.00a.m.-06.00p.m. November + March : daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. December - February :Tue-Sun 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. entrance-fee is 4 euros read more about it on my GEISA-Page Leave a Comment

Automobile Welt Eisenach is an interesting and rather new museum about the long tradition of the car-production in Eisenach. The first car was built there in 1899, it was the famous Wartburg-Motorenwagen with 5 HP. More pupolar cars that were built in Eisenach : BMW Dixi, the BMW Roadstar 328. After WW II BMW Eisenach had to change its name into EMW and finally Wartburg became the 2nd most popular car in DDR after the more popular Trabbi. I enjoyed that car-museum very much, one of my favorites was a so called camping-edition of a Wartburg, that was even exported to Great Britain ( my last picture) The museum of Automobile Welt Eisenach is open for visitors Tue-Sun : 11.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. entrance-fee is 3 Euros D-99817 Eisenach - Friedrich-Naumann-Straße 10 Leave a Comment Phone: 03691 77212Other Contact: Fax 03691 670945
