Rottenbuch - a great church in Bavaria by globetrott, 4 more photos The Augustinian monastery of Rottenbuch was founded in 1073 A.D. and the church was rebuilt in the 15th century. During the 17th century all the signs of the gothic architecture were rebuilt and changed into a Baroque interior, and that's the way it still looks today. Rottenbuch is just a tiny village of a few buildings today and nobody would expect to see such a wonderful church there, but make a stop and see it for yourself : No restrictions to enter this church during the day, photography is no problem as well ! This church is overloaded with ornaments and paintings on all the walls and ceilings, and the gothic elements are to be seen only at a few places now. Johann Schmuzer and his son Franz-Xaver rebuilt the church in Baroque style from 1737-1745 ___________________ Rottenbuch is just a rather small village between Schongau and Oberammergau and just 20km from Wieskirche. Simply follow road Nr. 23 from Schongau and you will pass by the church, that you may see already from far away by it's funny spire. From OUTside the church looks just like any other church of a small village, BUT have a look INside as well !!! Leave a Comment

Landshut - great houses on the main square by globetrott, 4 more photos Landshut is a place that you really should not miss to to choose for a stop-over. On my photographs you will see : 1) the townsquare of Landshut with lots of lovely baroque buildings 2) Burg Trausnitz is an interesting castle high above the city of Landshut. The oldest parts of the castle are dating back to the year 1204 and for several centuries it used to be the seat of the bavarian dukes. You may visit the castle by a guided tour between April and September, daily 09.00a.m. -06.00p.m. 3) The townhall of Landshut consists of 3 different gothic buildings, that were combined by a neo-gothic facade in 1861. The most precious room of the townhall is the Rathausprunksaal , the ornate audience-hall where the bride and the groom of the historic wedding of 1475 had their first dance togeather. 4) Pappenberger Haus is another interesting building with a unique facade. The building - opposite of the townhall - was built in the year 1405 and is an excellent excample for a gothic house of a wealthy citizen 5) Halle der Illusionen (hall of illusions) is one of the many highlights of Burg Trausnitz. This wall is completely flat, but by the way it is painted with fine frescos you get the feeling to see 3-dimensional decorations, paintings, doors etc. _________________________From Munich you drive northwards on the highway in Direction Deggendorf and Passau. About 70 km north of Munich you take the exit for Landshut. There is a perfect system of big car-parks in and around the city and the best are the private parkings - there you pay 3 Euros for the whole day ( 5 Euros on sundays !) same price applies for motorhomes, and you may also stay there over night without paying an extra fee. Beware of the Parking-house !! inside it is really narrow streets and narrow parking-bays, and you have to pay them hour by hour!! Landshut has a trainstation as well ! Leave a Comment

Schloss Mespelbrunn is without doubt one of the most beautiful water-castles in Germany and at the restaurant next to that castle one of the most famous comedies of the german Filmindustry was filmed : Das Wirtshaus im SpessartSpessart is the name of the landscape around the castle , and the Spessart is mainly well known as Germany's largest area of woods, an area that was quite spooky in the old times with plenty of robbers waiting for their victims... These robbers are also part of the story of the movie "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart" Schloss Mespelbrunn was hidden in the wide woods of Spessart and it was that way completely "overseen" during WW I and WW II. The castle is privately owned and may be visited only with a guided tour ! Photography is forbidden inside the castle, this is why I did not take the tour. (and I was in a hurry anyway) The castle is open end of March till 1st week of November: Mon-Sat.: 09.00a.m.-12.00noon + 01.00p.m.-05.00p.m. Sundays and holidays: 09.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. the regular entrance-fee is 3,50 Euros and 2 Euros for students & children ___________________________Mespelbrunn is not far from Aschaffenburg, at the very north-west-end of Bavaria. When driving on the highway A3 between Wuerzburg and Aschaffenburg, you will have sign-posts for Mespelbrunn-castle already on the highway ! The exit is called Weibersbrunn and once that you have left the highway, you will have to go through wide woods and drive about 10km in order to get to the castle ! There you will have a big parking in a distance of 300 meters to the castle & the famous "Wirtshaus im Spessart". Parking-fees are 2 Euros per day / 3 Euros for a motorhome. Leave a Comment

The townhall of Fuessen is another place in Fuessen that you should not miss, when you are interested in great architecture: it has a nice innercourt, but much more unique is the hall with great frescos that you will find when entering the big gate from the pedestrian area and walk straight ahead and enter the building there. Dont hesitate to step in, the whole building is used for administration-purposes and tourists are welcome there as well. Take a look at my 2nd pic, there is the entrance at the right, you step in there, walk to the opposite entrance inside the innercourt and that is where you will find these great frescos ! Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche is just a few meters from the townhall of Fuessen and it dates back to the year 1748. Take a look at its interesting facade and dont hesitate to get inside in order to see its ornate and interesting baroque interior. It was built by Franz Karl Fischer in the years 1748-49. The fresco at the ceiling is quite interesting, showing the 4 continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America at each corner. In the centre : the 7 sacraments (see my 4th picture) Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche was built as the church for the hospital and you will be able to enter it freely and without restrictions during the day ! ____________________Fuessen is in Bavaria, a great and easy full-daytrip from Munich by car or by train Leave a Comment

Most people just go to Fuessen in order to see Neuschwanstein - castle, but that is a pity, because the town itself is worth exploring as well !Alte Stadtapotheke (the old pharmacy)has most probably the most beautiful fassade of Füssen. You will find it in the pedestrian area. The design of the 17th century follows similar fassades in Italy and gives you the feeling to see real stones and structures - but in fact the walls are completely flat. The interior is worth seeing as well, because of the old wooden furniture and you will see many things that are typical for an old pharmacy : see what kind of things are hanging down from the ceiling : in former times such old animal-bones were used in order to create remedies, or at least it was pretended that these rare items were needed for the secret recepees of their remedies. Fuessen is in the south of Bavaria, a perfect daytrip by car or by train from Munich ! Leave a Comment

Alatsee is a rather small alpine lake, about 7 Km west of Füssen and the only way to get there is by walking or taking a horsecarriage from Bad Faulbach in summertime. The water on the top of Alatsee is crystall clear and a tiny river is flowing through it, but in the depth of about 10 meters the water gets a different density and you will find plenty of old trunks of trees and leaves in the water there. Below these trees you cannot see anything in the water, but the lake has a depth of several hundred meter at certain places. I was working in the hotel there in 1990, and at that time Prof. Fricke came with his research-submarine to search for relicts of WW II and Nazi-treasures. All he found was lots of fake British Pounds, printed by the Nazis and finally thrown into the lake at the end of the war. There are some more infos about that lake and its history on the web-page below. Leave a Comment

Ettal is a small village in the very south of Bavaria, close to Garmisch Partenkirchen, Schloss Linderhof and Oberammergau, and it is a perfect place to go to on a daytrip from Munich. In 1330 the monastery was founded and rebuilt in baroque style during the 17th century. Do not miss the great interior, with excellent paintings on the ceiling and the walls, and a lot of golden ornaments, that make this church really special. There is a big parking right in front of the monastery that may be visited freely any time during the day. There are more infos and pics about it on my Ettal-page - see the link below ! Ettal is about 60 Km south of Munich, and 10 Km north of Garmisch Partenkirchen ! Leave a Comment

Pilsum Lighthouse by MichaelFalk1969 This 11 meter-high lighthouse near Pilsum and Greetsiel in the Krummhörn region (Frisia) was built 1891 and in active service until 1915. The lighthouse was then abandoned but remains one of the icons of the region. It is often used in advertisements and was also a film location for the movie "Otto, der Außerfriesische", starring famous German comedian Otto Waalkes. It is also possible to have a civil wedding ceremony in the top of the lighthouse !

Harbour - Greetsiel by MichaelFalk1969 Greetsiel is a picture-perfect small harbour town in Frisia (the utmost northwestern part of Germany, near the Dutch border). Up to 30 crab-fishing boats are moored in the harbour. The Old Town is very small and contains lots of tiny frisian-style houses. Two historic windmills (built 1706 and 1856) complete the idyllic, laid-back athmosphere of Greetsiel. Only 2 km from the city centre the famous Pilsum lighthouse, painted with yellow-red stripes, is one of the iconic sights of the region. Bycicle Rental is recommended, as the area around Greetsiel is very flat and one can spend hours cycling along the sea or through the small idyllic hamlets of the Krummhörn region.
