Bielefeld

by MichaelFalk1969

Bielefeld is not exactly popular with tourists, nevertheless I decided to include it in my travel guide. It is not so bad after all, though it is sometimes used as a synonym for a totally dull and boring city. It will never become a major tourist destination in my lifetime, but even a dull city can have its good sides! If you go there, look for - the Crüwell House (one of the few remaining renaissance buildings, due to WW2 bombings)- the Old Town Hall (not so old after all, built 1904)- Sparrenburg Castle (on a hill within the city limits - good view on the city)- Kunsthalle (art museum) - some interesting temporary exhibitions- the "Bauernhaus-Museum", an Open Air museum with old farm buildings and a windmill- the small zoo in Olderdissen. Apart from that, Bielefeld is - rather close to the region "Ostwestfalen-Lippe" and the cities of Bückeburg (great renaissance palace), Rinteln,...

Schloss Lieser - Lieser Palace

by MichaelFalk1969

Off the beaten path indeed: We found Schloss Lieser by accident - when I saw it first time, I thought it just looked "haunted" (which is why I made a black&white picture to add to the athmosphere) and made a photo stop. It is a neo-renaissance palace from the late 19th century in the little town of Lieser, a suburb to Bernkastel-Kues (Mosel area). The palace is not open to the public - there are no guided tours (to the best of my knowledge), and it is in a state of repair. The exterior can be visited though. In my opinion a good location for "Malfoy Manor" whenever Harry Potter (7th Book) is going to be filmed.

Gemünden

by Nemorino

Two smaller rivers, the Sinn and the Fränkische Saale, flow into the Main here at Gemünden, a town of some 11,000 inhabitants.I have cycled through through here three times thus far, once along the Main from Würzburg and the other two times through the Spessart hills and down the Sinn Valley, as shown in the Off the Beaten Path tips on my Bad Orb page.Second photo: This part of the Main River, below Gemünden, as seen from the train in April 2007 -- with cyclists on the trail by the river bank.

St. Gereon Church in Colgone

by Paul2001

I did not have enough time to cover all of the twelve great Romanesque churches in Cologne's altstadt. I should have given the city at least another full day's worth of touring. Out of the few of the Romanesque churches that I visited, I think that the most impressive was St. Gereon Church. St. Gereon is arguably the oldest church in Cologne. It began it's life in the 4th century as an oval shaped chapel. Additions were added over the centuries but most notably in the 11th and 12th centuries when the two spires and the 4 story decagon were built. This makes for a brilliant structure that is very pleasing to the eye. The interior is a graceful but sparse. Unfortunately, St. Gereon was largely destroyed during the Second World War by Allied bombing. It the reconstruction was superbly done but it does feel a bit too "new". You just cannot bring back to life the centuries history that were...

This was taken from my favorite "biergarten" in Simmozheim, "Moenchwasen". Unfortunately the beauty of this picture has been ruined with this pilon from the petrol station... But when we sit over there, neither one of sees this trivia. Both Zeljko and me enjoy the sight of the nature before our eyes.

Strawberries

by Beograd

This year we have collected a lot of delicious berries in the forest. We ate forest strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. WARNING: This part of Schwarzwald ( I do not know if it applies to the whole Schwarzwald) has a big problem with some sort of worms which seem to be extremly dangerous if you happen to consume it through berries abnd mushrooms. Even children in schools are tought not to eat anything that grows on the ground. Still, these jewls from forest are eatable if they are cooked or should I say processed.

Spreewald

by nepalgoods

About 100 kilometres from the German capital city Berlin, the Spreewald region stretches over a total area of more than three thousand (3,173) square kilometres, split into the Lower and Upper Spreewald. In its core, 75 km long and 15 km wide, is the area designated by UNESCO in 1991 as the Spreewald biosphere nature reserve. This landscape of lowland and water meadows, unique in Central Europe, developed around 20,000 years ago in the Ice Age. The landscape was named after the Spree, a river with a 970 km long network of waterways winding through extensive meadows, forests and scattered settlements.Several thousands of animal and plant species, many of them very rare and on the list of endangered species, can be found in the Spreewald. Hundreds of butterfly species, numerous dragonflies, mussels, snails and slugs, batrachians, fish, mammals, and birds have their home here. For example,...

Get out of the city

by turnip2000

Head toward smaller less known gems in Germany and you will not regret it. Though Munich, Heidelberg, Berlin, etc. have much to offer, Germany is more than lederhosen, the "wall" or a "mass" of beer. East Germany and the northern part of the country have especially small gems to offer. Here is a small list which I suggest:Worpswede (outside of Bremen)Meissen (16 miles north of Dresden)Cochem (Mosel region..wine!)Dinkelsbuehl (romantic road)Quedlinburg GoerlitzBeilstein an der MoselDettelbachand many many more..
