from the town of kassel you have a hiking trail going north along the river fulda.i spend one day hiking 40 kilometers walking along the river and it was terrific.the hiking trail can be used by cyclists aswell and it´s paved almost all the way.
The Barbara Baths are an older and smaller set of Roman baths when compared to the nearby Imperial Baths. They were built in the 2nd century A.D. Actually little of the original site still exists and unless you knew what you were looking at I do not think that you would guess that they were Roman baths. The baths were quite large in there day but were torn down to make way for a castle which has also been demolished. All that remains today are the tunnels and trenches were water and steam flowed through. I understand that the baths are technically closed which might be why no one asked me for admission onto the grounds. I suppose I was trespassing but I did not see a security guard around to tell me that my prescence was prohibited. It took sometime to wander around the tunnels.The Barbara Baths are about a half of kilometer west of the Imperial Baths next to a synagogue.
Here the Frankfurt skyline and the Main River can be seen from an unusual vantage point, namely from the railway bridge leading to Frankfurt East Station.Long-distance trains usually do not cross this bridge, unless they have to be rerouted for some reason. OK, it isn't that far off the beaten path. But if you're looking for a quick day trip from Berlin to see a smaller, quieter German city, Potsdam is great. It's about a 30 minute train ride from Berlin's main subway station. Highlights include the Sansouci Gardens, Schloss Sansouci and the historic town center.
Fritzlar has a lovely old centre with half-timbered houses around a market square, a lovely Dom (cathedral) from 1118. This was actually built on the site of an earlier church (dating from 724). While walking around Fritzlar do not miss the Rathaus (townhall)- its lower floors date from the 12th century and the upper floors are from the 15th century. It is not far from the Dom.
This large lake has a huge dam on it. The dam was built in1908-1912, it was bombed in May 1943 by the allied "dambusters". 110 million cubic litres water flooded the area with catastrophic results - 1200 people died. The dam was repaired within the year. You can drive around the lake where there are several small beaches and lots of cafes and restaurants.A nice walk which is easy and not long is to park in the parking lot at the Mohnesee dam itself (costs 2 euros) and then walk across the dam, down the side of it and around the end of the lake and up the other side of the dam back to the parking lot. From the dam wall you get lovely views of the countryside and form below you can see just how high the dam is.
We wanted to do something different this trip to Germany and crossing the Bodensee by boat was one of our choices. So we first made a return trip to Stein am Rhein, a nice little town on the northern border of Switzerland. ( visiting this neat place is a whole different story) Then we stayed overnite in a Gausthouse back in Germany. The next morning we set out for our ultimate destination Bad Wiessee. We drove to Konstanz and caught the ferry to Meersburg. A very nice break for us from driving. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was great. If you have the time we sugest you try it.
This street, Mainkai, runs directly along the left bank of the Main River in the town of Marktheidenfeld, and has several small hotels, pensions and restaurants. Second photo: There is no internet cafe in Marktheidenfeld, but here in the new city hall there is a public internet terminal that anyone can use for free. The time limit is fifteen minutes if other people are waiting, and the woman at the tourist office sees to it that the local kids don't monopolize the terminal if tourists are waiting to use it.
I have managed to visit several Catholic churches, cathedrals and monasteries during my stays in Germany.It was very impressive to attend a mess at St.Paul's Cathedral in Altenkirchen, Westerwald and at the cathedral in Horhausen in the same county.I remember each of my visit to those places very well.
An old city which has seen a lot of Germany's medieval history but sees few international tourists. I guess the reason is that Braunschweig was damaged in WWII so it has quite a modern centre, but there are still plenty of historic buildings scattered in it with great historic and architectural value such as Henry the Lion's castle, the great cathedral interior and not least the famous art museum with its Rubens and Rembrandts which is from the 18th century and Germany's oldest museum!
