Wernigerode is yet another town at the foot of the Harz mountains and with hundreds of lovely half-timbered houses and a magnificent town hall, it was a major GDR tourist destination. Not least as you can travel up to Mount Brocken, the peak of Harz, by steam train from here.
Yet again a town mostly visited by the Germans themselves. A World Heritage site at that! Quedlinburg has more than 1200 half-timbered buildings and is the place where the first German Reich happened through Heinrich I who had a castle built here.
I find there turbines extremely useful & I feel sad that not all of the countries tend to use this source of energy. It doesn't only look cool, but it causes no pollution or anything. Anyway, the whole northern Germany is literally covered in these big but smarties.I read in the newspapers lately that Croatia's also started putting up some of these - nice! ;)
Stuttgart is a smaller city locted in Southwest Germany surrounded by forests and vineyards. It's also the capital city of Baden-Wurttemburg, and is known for its automobile companies, ballet and opera performances at the "Opernhaus." My host family in Germany took me to see a ballet here, it was really amazing. Outside the opera there is a very photogenic park with fountains and gardens, perfect for just an afternoon strole or to sit down and read for a few hours.Many people probably wouldn't think to pass by Stuttgart while visiting in Germany, but it may be fun. There is a historical car museum located here, as well as a zoo, lots of shopping and historical sites. (See my Things To Do tips)
The Stuttgart zoo was very impressive, a really nice outing. It's not only a zoo, but a botanical garden with all kinds of indigenous flowers, and other plants from all over the world. The was an aquarium with a very large variety of different fish and other aquatic creatures. They featured pretty much every kind of animal you can expect to find at a zoo... hipos, elephants, polar bears, tigers, etc.This zoo is one of the oldest in Europe, and very old-fashioned with all the oriental-looking buildings. I seem to remember a giant turtle as well... must have been about 3 feet tall! The zoo is located on Neckartalstraße Postfach 50 in Stuttgart. It's about 10 Euros entrance admission for adults, 5 Euros for children (prices may be reduced if you decide to go later in the day, or in the evening.)
This is the Main River just before it unites with the Rhine at Mainspitze, near the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden.By this time the Main has been flowing some 500 kilometers in a generally east-to-west direction, but with three large swings to the south and then back to the north.Starting at Bayreuth (yes, the one with the Wagner festival), it flows northwest for a while, then southeast to Bamberg, northwest to Schweinfurt, south to Kitzingen, then northwest by way of Würzburg to Gemünden (where two other rivers join it, the Fränkische Saale and the Sinn), then south to Wertheim (where the Tauber River meets it), then west to Miltenberg, north to Aschaffenburg, northwest to Hanau and then west past Offenbach and through Frankfurt am Main on its way to right here.
It was a lucky chance that I visited Burg Rheinstein in the Rhine valley. It is about 10 miles north of Bingen, not far from the famous Lorelei. Iy you are on B9, stop at the smal parking and walk about 10 minutes up the hill. You will not regret that it is a rather steep path, because the castle and the view on the Rhine valley is fantastic!
Koln and Dusseldorf are great cities that i travelled to. I enjoyed them. They seemed rich in culture and very old. I visited alot of churches and went shopping alot when in the cities, but also tried to understand the german culture.
