Here is a typical scene on the Main River, a short ways upstream from Aschaffenburg.The cycling trails along the Main River have been very much upgraded in recent years. They are now mostly paved, well signposted and generally free of automobile traffic.
The old stone bridge that crosses the Danube River at Regensburg is the bridge in Germany. It was built between 1135 and 1145 and is considered to be a masterpiece of medieval architecture. There are 16 huge pillars that span across the length of the bridge and the rapid flowing river beneath.
the river elbe runs across the northern part of germany.it is a nice place to go if you wanna hike or bike as it has a cycling trail running all along it.you will see some typical german countryside that way too.
We had gone here to see the pony and trap training ground but as no one was training we had a look around and came across these two " people " made from grass, weird or what??? All around were some kind of bunkers but were all being developed into bungalows, they looked nice but they were all exactly the same even down to the furniture inside. I think it will be called Clone City
This is the former Großmarkthalle (wholesale produce market) on the site of the future headquarters of the European Central Bank (ECB).They are planning a large complex of buildings, including three skyscrapers. The main market building, a huge historic building from the year 1928, will be preserved, renovated and incorporated into the new complex. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2005, and the bank plans to move in to the new complex in 2009.The ECB is now operating from rented offices in several buildings in downtown Frankfurt, particularly the Eurotower on Willy-Brandt-Platz, opposite the Frankfurt Opera.
Vianden is a little town just over the border of germany (actually located in east luxembourg). I wouldn't go too far out of the way to see it but it's definately nice if you're in the area. There's a ski lift that will take youto the top of a mountain with an incredible view of the town and a castle... a perfect place to drink a couple beers and let appreciation set in.Located West of Bitburg, Germany just across the lux border
Here is a typical scene along the Main River downstream from Wertheim. The things in the foreground that look like big mushrooms are actually moorings that the river barges can tie onto if they want to stop here for the night.
One of the more fascinating little museums in this part of the country, the School Museum in Lohr traces the development of schools and their function in society from the 19th century to the present. It includes an authentic classroom from the year 1910, and also has exhibits showing how the schools were used for indoctrination by the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s, and by the Communist government in the former East Germany.The museum is only open Wednesday through Sunday from 2 to 4 pm (14.00 to 16.00), so try to time your visit accordingly. Sendelbacher Str. 21, on the left bank of the Main River in Lohr.
Shortly before the town of Lohr we cross the 50th parallel. There is a red line painted across the bicycle route at this point, with the number 50. Beside the bicycle route there is a large boulder with a plaque, set up by the local chapter of the Social Democratic Party, listing some of the places in the world that are on the 50th parallel. Lohr is listed first, of course, followed by Aschaffenburg, Wiltz (Luxembourg), Arnstein, the southern tip of England, Schesslitz, Winnipeg (Canada), Prague, Krakau (Poland), Charkov (Russia), Tenurtan (Kasachstan), Ulangom (Mongolia) and Sachalin.Any questions?
The bridge in this photo is part of a recently built stretch of railway line called the Nantenbach Curve, connecting the old Main Valley line to the new high speed north-south ICE line. The InterCity Express train in the photo has just come from Frankfurt and Aschaffenburg. After crossing the curving bridge it will continue through several curving tunnels and join the new line to Würzburg. The Nantenbach Curve was opened in May 1994. It cost 410 million Marks at the time (about 210 million Euros) and speeds up the journey to Würzburg by twelve minutes.The river barge going up the Main River in the photo will also get to Würzburg eventually, following various bends in the river.
