Burghausen : Jazz & a great castle

by globetrott

Burghausen in Bavaria is well known for its Jazz-sessions and for the largest castle in Germany. My favorite building there on the baroque townsquare is the townhall on my main photograph !the main attraction is the castle high above the town, it is almost large like a small village with lots of different buildings, churches, gardens and museums, all of them surrounded with a fortified wall, it really looks impressive !Burghausen is directely at the bavarian border to Austria, about halfway between Salzburg and Braunau.

a funny carferry in Rendsburg

by globetrott

Schwebefaehre in Rendsburg is a really intersting kind of a car-ferry : It is in the middle of Rendsburg, where the Kiel-Canal is quite narrow and ships cannot stop in order to let the carferry pass by. So they needed a special construction of a very fast ferry, not touching the water at all, but hanging down from the train-bridge on long ropes, that way it can get across the Kielcanal within a very short time. This ferry dates back to the year 1913 and is 14 meters long and 6 meters wide, it will carry 4 ordinary cars or 1 large truck and plenty of pedestrians and cyclists / bikers at the same time.Schwebefaehre is in service daily from 5a.m. till 11p.m.every 15 minutes it will go at00 + 15 + 30 + 45 minutes after the full hour from South07 + 22 + 37 + 52 minutes after the full hour from NorthLike all the other ferries across the Kiel-Canal it is totally free of charge for cars and...

Molkerei - lousy crew in a special ambiente

by globetrott

Pf. Molkerei in Dresden dates back to the year 1892 and all of the walls of their shop and dairy are covered by beautiful tiles.I had found this lovely dairy in a brochure, and so I booked a tourbus, that would stop there in order to take a picture and taste some of their food and have a buttermilk....I entered the shop and in that very moment the lady at the counter started to scream NO Photographs !!!I simply turned around and gave up my plans to buy anything there and had some coffee somewhere else...I did not disturb anyone BUT had the feeling, that lots of customers in the shop were rather disturbed by that sceaming lady than by my camera. They had a sign at their door about photography, BUT the door was open, so I did not see it...In December 2004 I returned shortly before 06.00p.m. and took all of these photos legally from OUTside of the shop. And I also got the legal advice by a...

Glueckstadt - dont confuse with Gluecksburg

by globetrott

Glueckstadt is a lovely town, where you will get to, when driving west from Hamburg towards Brunsbüttl. The main sights of Gluecksstadt are the townsquare and the protestant church with great paintings and lots of lovely halftimbered houses in the citycentre. There is an artificial waterway running through the village - see it on my last picture - that way the goods could be transported in ancient times from the river Elbe directely to the stores and warehouses.Nowadays these canals are just a decoration without commercial purpose.Dont confuse this town with Gluecksburg, close to Flensburg, where you find a lovely water-castle !

Helmstedt and the Wall

by Sjalen

Here and there in Germany, little bits of the wall which split the two German nations during the cold war has been left standing, just to remind people of what it was like. One such place is outside Helmstedt which is itself quite a nice smalltown in the middle of nowhere if you want to escape the tourist crowds, and with a great beech forest ridge nature reserve. The wall memorial itself is in the village of Hötensleben and consists of a watchtower and bits of wall and barbed wire. To me who remember the real thing with barking German shepherds and people pointing guns from the towers it is an odd experience to walk around here on a sunny day with nothing stopping me...

Windeck

by Sjalen

I know a lot about German geography having spent time here since my childhood, but when my family mentioned Windeck I was lost as it is not particularly well-known outside the local region which is a shame. It is in fact a whole area in the hills east of Cologne and Bonn, and I have now been lucky enough to visit it and hope to go back as it is full of scenery, being positioned in the valley of the river Sieg which in turn is surrounded by volcanic hills with the odd "burg" on top. This is a great place for those of you who like hiking in forests or canoeing and at night you can book yourself into one of the countryside inns on the outskirts of peaceful villages such as Dattenfeld with its lovely church. If you are bound by public transport it gets a bit harder to get around here but there are some buses and the easiest way to get here is by train from for instance Cologne towards...

Rotenberg Chapel

by JREllison

Bus: No. 61 from the train station in Untertürkheim - Stop RotenbergOn 9 January 1819 Queen Katharina von Württemberg, daughter of the Russian Czar, unexpectedly died at the age of 30. Her husband, King Wilhelm I, had the ancestral hill top castle of the Württemberg Royal Family torn down and the mausoleum for Queen Katharina erected on top of that hill. Russian Orthodox church services are still celebrated today. The hill sides around the Chapel are covered with vinyards, city noise and hussel are far removed. This was a great place to enjoy the quite and solitude of the countryside.

Kassel...

by Colzy

The is a wonderful city on the River Fulda, located in the heart of Germany. There are many thingsto do in this wonderful town which boasts more than 63 % of parks and woodlands so there are some idyllic walks.Perhaps the most famous thing in Kassel is 'Herkules' which stands about 600m above sea level and has awesome 360 degree views. If you happen to time your visit to Kassel between April and November then you can witness the amazing Wasserspiel which starts from this point. On Wednesday and Sunday's at 2:30pm one can see the water cascade down the hill culminating in a 52m high fountain of water at the bottom in a very dramatic fashion.I was told that the ruler at the time sold something like 20 000 of its citizens to the British to fight in the American war of Independance and used the proceeds to build 'Herkules'. I cant exactly say that I agree with his method of raising cash but...

Wörthspitze

by Nemorino

Here at the Wörthspitze in Höchst, a district in the western part of Frankfurt, is where the Nidda River flows into the Main.It the background you can catch a glimpse of the two very different faces of Höchst. On the right there is a lovely Old Town (better than anything downtown Frankfurt has to offer) and in the center of the photo you can see the chimneys of an extensive industrial area where the Hoechst Chemical Company used to be before it was smashed by globalization. (What's left of Hoechst is now a part of Aventis, if I have understood correctly.)

Tip Photo
Höchster Altstadt

by Nemorino

The Old Town in Höchst has been lovingly restored. In the summer there are several outdoor restaurants that serve good food and drinks in a very picturesque setting. To get to Höchst by train, take the S1 in the direction of Wiesbaden or the S2 in the direction of Niedernhausen. From the central station, Höchst is the third stop, after Griesheim and Nied.
