Baroque garden in Blankenburg

by margaretvn

Blankenburg is a little town near the Harz mountains with a number of half timbered houses and a 18th century castle high on the hill overlooking the town. There is a lovely Baroque garden which was laid out as part of a plan to find work to people with no jobs. The garden is lovely and it climbs up the hill towards the castle so as you walk through it you get lovely views. The old towen is small and is being well restored. Nearby is the Teufelsmaur (Devils wall) which is a really strange shaped sandstone cliff. It is 4 kilometres long with really sharp tops and it attracts many climbers. It can be seen from the road at several places and is a wierd unearthly sort of place - probably why it got its name.

The Hexentanzplatz

by margaretvn

Thale is a little town in the Harz with a cable car taking you to the Hexentanzplatz. This is a platform high above the town with wonderful views across the countryside. It is also the place where the witches fly to Sabath celebrations on Walpurgis Night (30 April- 1 May). You can climb up to the top as there are good walking paths - we did it the easier way and took the cable car up and walked down. there are several walks with different distances. The top is actually very touristy with lots stalls selling witches in every colous and size but if you ignore that there views are lovely. There are places to eat and drink before you set off walking. There is an open air theatre where concerts and plays are performed as well.

Quedlinburg

by margaretvn

Quedlinburg is another lovely little town with half timbered houses, which date from various times. The oldest is a little house - Wordgasse 3 which dates from about 1400. It is actually the oldest surviving timber frame house in Germany. The history of the town is closly linked to the convent that was established there by Emperor Otto I and his mum St. Mathilde in 936. On a hill above the town is the Stiftkirche St Servatius built 1017-1129. The crypt (which belonged to the previous church ) contains the tombs of Emperor Henry and his wife. The centre is a walking area and there are several very nice places for coffee. There is a cafe which is actually built in 7 houses!

Goslar

by margaretvn

Goslar is a lovely town which is close to the Harz Mountains. It has about 1800 half timbered houses (the largest number in one town in Germany). The town is a UNESCO world heritage site. It has a long history and for 300 years the Holy ROman Emperors of Germany resided here. The towns main source of wealth came from the zinc, copper and especially silver mines which are nearby in Rammelsberg. The Kaiserpfalz or Emperors palace is a stone building dating from 1005-1015 but largely rebuilt in the 19th century. The chapel and the Emperors Hall are lovely. There are some parts of the earlier defences which date back to the 1500's such as the very impressive "Breites Tor" or wide gate. The half timbered "Siemenshaus" on Schreiberstrasse (number 12) is beautiful.

Greifswald

by AndreSTGT

The small university town of Greifswald has an image problem. Among western German students it's a running gag to tell someone with bad grades that he certainly has to go to Greifswald because no other university will accept him. Being sent to Greifswald is the biggest fear a western German student has.I have no idea where these negative ideas about Greifswald come from, maybe it's because the town is in a very remote corner of Eastern Germany, maybe it's because there have been some problems with neonazis in recent years. I don't know, but i found Greifswald very attractive and enjoyable, if slightly too calm and provincial. As in other Hanseatic trading towns there's a beautiful large market square with colorful, gabled houses, plenty of nice cafés and it's only a couple of minutes to the Baltic sea, so in my opinion not a bad place for students (and visitors) at all.

The Deutsches Eck and the Statue of Kaiser Wilhelm

by Paul2001

I spent so much time traveling up and down the Rhine and Mosel valleys that I somewhat neglected Koblenz, the city that I used as my base for these excursions. There are is actually a fair bit to see in Koblenz. It can easily keep you busy for a day or two. Unfortunately much of what you see in Koblenz is recreated as the city was largely destroyed by the bombings of World War II. One of these recreated objects is this statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I, located in the Deutsches Eck. This city park is situated where the Mosel and the Rhine rivers meet and is a good place to collect your thoughts and to gaze at this interesting statue. The statue was originally created in 1897 and was the largest equestian statue in the world. It like the rest of Koblenz was blown up during World War II. What you see today was recreated in 1993.

Warburg is a historical town in suthern Westphalia, close to the Hessian border. Warburg is actually two towns in one: the lower and the upper towns, each one with its own marketplace and church. The picturesque climb between the upper and the lower area is lined with half-timbered houses.

Ludwigslust

Ludwigslust is a small town with an unusual appearance: it grew around a Barroque residential palace andthe main road that leads to it, spacious and lined with typical Northern German brick architecture, like the post office building pictured here.Ludwigslust is located in the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
