Soest

by DanielF

Soest, in the State of Northrhine-Westphalia, is the best preserved walled city in Northern Germany. The streets of the old town are disposed in concentric circles around the main square where the most noble buildings of the town stand: the town hall and the two main churches, build in a characteristic greenish stone.

Tip Photo
Hamelin

by DanielF

Hamelin is a town in Lower Saxony that holds the rare honour to have been the real playground of a worldwide known fairy tale. As it happens with other well known litterary characters, the Rattenfänger has come to life in Hameln for the sake of tourism. Now you can even visit his own house.

Bernburg

by DanielF

Bernburg, in the State of Saxony-Anhalt, is scenecally located in the banks of the Saale river, South of Magdeburg. It has all it is needed to qualify for a protoypical German town: a castle, a market square and half-timbered houses.

Lemgo

by DanielF

Lemgo is a town in Easten Westphalia which is famous for its colourful old town and its Renaissance castle, which is one of the best examples of the Wesser-Renaissance style. This picture shows the Town Hall in Lemgo.

Lueneburg

by DanielF

Lueneburg, in Lower Saxony, is one of the most interesting North German towns. Its different neighbourhoods are all full of character and offer a great diversity in such a small place.Lueneburg also gives its name to the Lüneburger heide, a natural Park or marshes, meadows and fields which covers a large part of the Northen German plain.

Small towns

by DanielF

Small towns generally show the face of Germany that a tourist wants to see. Their lack of economic or strategic importance saved them in many cases from the devastating bombings that ruined all the big cities in the last war. They now boast a rich architectural heritage and an old Europe atmosphere that the larger cities have lost in many cases. Only a handful of these small towns get all the attention, leaving the rest at the entire disposal of the most inquisitive tourists.I will progressively list below some of the German little towns that I have visited (in alphabetical order).

Noerdlingen

by DanielF

Nördlingen is one of the towns on the romantic road, but far less visited than Rothenburg. It is a walled city with a well preserved historical area. It is possible to walk on the city walls for breathtaking wiews of the town rooves.Nördlingen is located in the Free State of Bavaria, close to the border with the region of Swabia, in Baden-Württemberg.

Two weeks in Germany - The very north of MeckPom

by Leipzig

If you want to do this journey by bike you should calculate two weeks. The journey starts in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania's capital: Schwerin. On an island in Lake Schwerin is idyllically situated the fairytale castle, the landmark of the town. One of the most beautiful castles in Germany. After visiting the museum and the city centre you take the train to Rostock, the largest town of the state. After a walk through the beautifully restored centre you can take the bus to Warnemuende. This seaside resort is a popular destination for tourists because of its white sandy beaches and the beautiful buildings, especially the lighthouse and the "Teepott", with its unusual roof. It is just a must to take a round trip by boat. Price for a one hour trip is about six Euro. The following passage of the trip is ideal for cycling tours. With the bike east go along the coast and stop in towns like...

One week in Germany - the tour of architecture

by Leipzig

The journey starts in Heidelberg with its castle ruin and the living historic centre. Heading north to Darmstadt with the a 16th-century Town Hall and the Jugendstil (art nouveau) artists' colony. Next stop is Wuerzburg with its historic buildings of the Romanticism, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo. The major sights are the Residenz Palace that today is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, and Marienberg Fortress, dominating the skyline and overlooking the beautiful Old Town. Follow the Main River to Bamberg and its almost intact old town centre that is added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. North of Bamberg is the enchanting town of Coburg. The first you see here is the Coburg Fortress towering high above the town. Next destination is Erfurt, Thuringia's capital with its beautiful historic town centre. West of Erfurt is Eisenach with the world famous Wartburg Castle....
