One week in Germany - The tracks of Goethe

by Leipzig

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is maybe the most popular German poet. To get inspiration he travelled a lot. The most famous route through Germany is today named after him. The "Goethe Route" starts in the city of the his birth, Frankfurt am Main, today the economic centre of Germany. Highlights are places like St Paul's Church or the "Roemerberg". The journey goes eastwards through the scenic region called Rhoen to Fulda, where Goethe spent most of time as teenager. Eisenach, one of Germany's cultural centres - not at least due to Martin Luther and the Wartburg Castle. Passing through Erfurt, where Goethe met Napoleon for the first time in October 1808. Erfurt has one of the most beautiful historic centres. East of Erfurt is Weimar, Germany's cultural capital. Goethe lived here from 1775 until his death. A must see in this town is Goethe's summer-house where he wrote "Iphigenie". A few...

One week in Germany - be active in your holidays

by Leipzig

Thuringia is called "the green heart of Germany". Most popular is the Thuringia Forest with its gently rolling hills, mountains and steep valleys. One possibility to explore the beauty of the region is to hike the famous hiking trail, the 170 km (105 mi) long Rennsteig. It starts in Hoerschel, a small town on the Werra River and goes to Blankenstein on the Saale River. Besides vast forests you can see swampy highlands, rural villages, steep cliffs, springs of rivers, lakes and mountaintops. Highest peaks along this route are the Grosser Beerberg (982 m), Schneekopf (978 m), Grosser Finsterberg (944 m) and Grosser Inselsberg (916 m).

One week in Germany - life 1000 years ago

by Leipzig

The Southern Romanesque Route goes through towns and villages shoing monasteries, cathedrals, churches and fortresses or the Romanesque period (-> read General Tips for more info about this period). Most parts of this Road are located in Saxony-Anhalt. Highlight is the state capital, Magdeburg, with the Monastery of Our White Lady, built 1017. South of the town is Hablerstadt with its two ecclesiastical buildings, the Gothic cathedral and the Church of Our Dear Lady. Quedlinburg's entire centre is listed as UNESCO World heritage and shows architectural styles of the past 1000 years. The Romanesque church of St Servatius with the cathedral treasure at the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) is the main attraction of the town. Not less beautiful is the medieval town centre with its half-timbered houses from seven centuries. The next stop is Querfurt with the Querfurt Fortress, one of Germany's...

One week in Germany - Discover Germany's history

by Leipzig

Thuringia, the green state in Germany's heart with a very rich history. Starting in the very east of the state, in Altenburg, cradle of Germany's most popular card game - Skat. The former royal seat looks back on over 1000 years of history. As the town did not suffer from bomings the centre is almost completely in old style, spanning many centuries. West of the town, around Jena is the so-called Silicon valley" of Germany. Jena's university had some famous teachers, like Friedrich Schiller and is still today a popular place to study. Weimar, west of Jena, has been Germany's cultural centre and became European City of Culture in 1999. Goethe, Schiller, Bach and many more famous German acted in this town. Erfurt, the state capital, has one of the best preserved medieval town centres in Germany. South of Erfurt, in the Thuringia Forest is the little town of Paulinzella. This town with less...

One week in Germany - Drinking like the Romas did

by Leipzig

The German Wine Road extends for 85 kilometres from Bockenheim near Worms the Alsace border. This region is one of the warmest and sunniest place in Germany. Ideal for an excellent wine. Worms is the second oldest city in Germany. Founded by the Romans it later became popular according to the Nibelungen legend. Romans were the first who discovered this region to produce wine. Near the town of Bad Dürkheim, 20km west of Ludwigshafen a Roman vineyard, called "villa rustica" was found. The road goes via Neustadt, Bad Bergzabern to Wissemborg, France.Highlights on this road are the annual wine festivals. Most towns elect the "Queen of Wine" in fall and celebrate the festivals with a procession.Don't miss to visit some smaller towns off the wine road. Speyer for example, 22 kilometers east of Neustadt attracts with a well-preserved Romanesque cathedral.

Meissen

by DanielF

Meissen is probably the best preserved of the historical Saxon cities and the most reputed china manufacturing point in Germany. Only its location on a hill overlooking the Elbe is stunning and the wealth in monuments and interesting places make of it an ideal destination for a daytrip or even for a short stay.

Celle

by DanielF

The whole old area of Celle, in Lower Saxony, is composed of rows of half-timered houses decorated in bright colours. The small town has also a perfectly restored Barroque Schloss. Everything looks so neat and aseptic here that some people might think it is all staged.

Alsfeld

by DanielF

Located in Northern Hesse, the small town of Alsfeld has an interesting old area where the Market Square gets all the attention. The City Hall, Church tower and half-timbered houses make a really picturesque scene.

Freudenberg

by DanielF

Freudenberg does not have any particularlyremarkable building. It is the attractive homogeneity in black and white of its half-timebered houses that has made it popular as one of the most beautiful Fachwerkstädte in Northrein-Westphalia.

One week in Germany - the pearl of the Baltic Sea

by Leipzig

Ruegen is Germany's biggest island. I recommend to do this trip by bike. Start in Stralsund. The old hanseatic town is the Gate to Ruegen, due to the only bridge. Don't miss to climb up the tower of St. Marien Church and visit the typical Haseatic centre. Cross the bridge to Ruegen and follow the major road to Putbus, the last European town built in classical style. Don't miss to see the huge Schlosspark. Now you have the opportunity to take the "Rasender Roland" (a steam locomotive operating between Putbus and Goehren) or to go on by bike. This seaside resort is not very crowded by tourists and has a great sandy beach. Sellin is well known for the Wilhelm Street and the Sea Bridge, setting of many movies. Binz has always been a popular seaside resort. It attracts with beautiful houses and a great sandy beach. Cycle on along the coast to Sassnitz. At the harbour you find a lot of fishing...
