One week in Germany - east of the Harz

by Leipzig

The Harz is the northernmost German mountain region. With the granite summit of the Brocken the Harz rises up to 1142 metres (4477 feet). Harz means spruce forests, rock fields and moors as well as picturesque towns. Here you find more than 500 kilometres of well-prepared cross-country courses and Alpine sport is possible as well in the winter. It is all over the year an ideal place for hiking and recreation. Our journey begins in Quedlinburg. The town is situated on the east side of the Harz region. The center with its half-timbered houses belongs to UNESCO World Heritage. Near Thale take the cable railway up to the Hexentanzplatz (Witch's Dance Square). It is 454 m (1490 ft) above sea level and offers you an excellent view down the valley. Now get the bus to Schirke and take the steam locomotive up to the highest point - the Brocken. This mount is the windiest place of Germany....

One week in Germany - follow the Saale River

by Leipzig

The Saale Valley has always attracted kings and dukes to built their lodges and castles here. Still today you can see numerous castles along the river. The river has formed terraces and steep cliffs over the past 10,000 years. Long cycle routes and hiking tracks can be found here. Here you have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Goethe and Schiller, who loved to spend their holidays here. The journey starts where the Saale River springs - in the Fichtel Mountains, south of Hof. This lovely old city in the very north eastern corner of Bavaria attracts visitors with some nice restored old houses. Main attraction is for sure the St Michael Church in the centre. Beyond the border to Thuringia you come across one of the most popular swimming places of this region, the Bleilochtalsperre, Germany?s largest dam. The Museum of Water Power in Ziegenr?ck or the centre of Lobenstein worth a...

One week in Germany - Sound of Music Tour

by Leipzig

The journey begins in the “City of Music”, Leipzig, Wagner's and Mendelssohn’s birthplace and workplace of Schumman and Bach. Start with the big churches in the centre of Leipzig, St. Thomas and St. Nicholai. Don’t miss the Bach Museum, just next to the St. Nicholai-Church. If you have some luck you can hear the world famous St. Thomas Boy Choir singing. Go to the home of Felix-Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Follow the steps of the famous poet Schiller and have a coffee in one of world’s oldest coffee house, ”Zum Coffe Baum” or do it like Goethe and drink a wine at “Auerbachs Keller”. Take the train to the Vogtland - the so-called "Saxon Music Corner". Start your visit in Zwickau*, birthplace of Robert Schumann. Klingenthal, not far away attracts with the accordion manufacture. Take the bus or train to the town of Markneukirchen. Here you can see tradional handcraft. Craftsmen make wooden and...

Hannoversch Münden

by DanielF

Germany is full of picturesque little towns full of typical half-timered houses. Although Bavaria gets all the fame, they are actually scattered all around the country. Hannoversch Münden is one of the most interesting ones. It is located in Lower Saxony, between the cities of Kassel and Göttingen. This is a picture of the Renaissance Town Hall of Münden in a snowy day. You can see more pictures in the travelogue.

Wine country along the Nahe River

by mtncorg

The Nahe River valley is an often overlooked part of Germany that serves up some very fine scenery and wines. The river flows into the Rhine at Bingen, the town where the 'Rhine Canyon' begins. The main center for the Nahe valley is Bad Krueznach and the best time to be here is for Jahrmarkt - the third week in August. Plenty of amusements to keep you occupied and a large vinters tent - think the size of a Munich Oktoberfest beer tent. There are a dozen or more local vinters pouring their creations inside, just be careful you know how to walk home afterwards. Just downstream from Bad Kreuznach, the river flows through some spectacular canyons. There are some very nice parks and paths to wander along passing by some open-air vaporizers called salinenthals. About 5 km downstream is another kurtown, Bad Munster am Stein/Ebernburg. This town is set in a deep canyon amongst castles and...

NATIONALPARK BERCHTESGADEN

by mtncorg

High in the mountains above the Konigsee in the extreme southeast corner of Bavaria, is Germany's greatest national park. Here you can walk in the largest area of wild alpine terrain within Germany. The cable car on the Jenner allows hikers to gain ground the easy way. Climbing out of the Konigsee or Obersee or from the more westerly sited Wimbachtal entail a little more work. The vast Steinernes Meer/Rocky Sea is another example of the the high mountain karstic plateaus that can be found on the Untersberg - just north of Berchtesgaden - and both the Dachstein and the Todtesgebirge - to the east in neighboring Austria. This is some of the best mountain landscapes to be found in Germany.

Kamp-Lintfort

by mtncorg

Like many German towns, Kamp-Lintfort comes from the almagation of two villages grown together. Kamp was the original village, growing up next to the monastery - kloster - that had been established on the little hill, Klosterberg. Lintfort came about in the 19th century with the development of the coal mine industry. The two towns are very different in their outlook, with Kamp being an aggregation of much older houses and much quieter. Lintfort was developed as a company town. The mine elevator serves as the 'church spire' for this half. The mine is still going with the elevator going over a kilometer deep into the earth. Originally, sections of the town were divided into the area where the normal workers, die Bergwerkers, lived and the much larger and grander area where the Beamte, the mine officials, lived.

CLOEF BELVEDERE

by mtncorg

From a car viewpoint high above the Saar river, between Saarbruecken and Trier, one can look out over the wooded promontory of the Montclair loop. Here you can see how deeply the Saar river has cut into the sweeping Hunsruck mountains. The river forms a deep horseshoe indicating the river loop was there before the slow mountain uplift occured.

HOMBERG/EFTZE

by mtncorg

Germany is full of little gems to explore and discover. Here, in the hills just off the Frankfurt-Hannover-Hamburg autobahn, the E4, not far south of Kassel, is the little town of Homberg/Eftze. The town is crammed full of half-timbered houses, atmospheric charm and lies below the castle ruins above on the Homberg. Martin Luther spent some time up here at the castle and so can you.

Bad Durkheim are for the wine lovers

by terps94

You dont have to be wine connosieur to enjoy the winefest in Bad Durkheim. This village is part of the Deutsch Winestrasse and located in one of the biggest wine producing region in Germany. During the month of August they have one of the biggest winefest in Rhineland-Pfalz. You can taste the new wines of the season and if thats not enough for you they also have different rides on the fair grounds. I recommend that you try the rides first before you start sampling the wine.
