One of Germany's most beautiful landscapes can be found along the Elbe river south of Dresden down to the Czech border.The area is called 'Saxonian Switzerland' because of its wonderful green meadows, pristine forests, creeks and gorges.One of the best views on the region can be enjoyed from the impressive Festung (Fort) Königstein.It's a worthwhile day trip from Dresden, especially if you have your own transport.
Güstrow is most famous (so i've been told because i'd never heard about it before) for its magnificent Renaissance castle, a wonderful place, indeed, especially with its fragrant lavender garden.But the whole town is extremely attractive and a great place to stop for a few hours en route between Rostock and Schwerin.
Yet another 'Hansestadt' and UNESCO World Heritage site, Stralsund is still a bit more edgy than Lübeck or Wismar, and this is exactly what's so charming about this town. The old red-brick port buildings have all been restored and now house clubs and cocktail bars, a very enjoyable quarter.Colorful, gabled houses, some still undergoing restoration, can be seen throughout the city center and the massive, imposing Nikolai church is visible for miles.Stralsund is also the jumping-off point to the beautiful island of Rügen, just 3km offshore.
North-eastern Germany's largest city has a very attractive city center with colorful gabled houses, old town squares and remains of the medieval city wall. Most of the center is pedestrianised.Rostock's beautiful university was founded in 1419 and is the oldest in northern Germany. Another beautiful building is the pink 12th century town hall on Neuer Markt.One drawback is that Rostock's Old Town doesn't have a lot to offer in terms of outdoor cafés and pubs (most of them are in the KDV quarter west of Kröpeliner Tor).
The Unterudkldingen Lake Dwellings Open Air Museum is one of the oldest outdoor museums in Europe. It sits on the shores of the Bodensee near Meersburg, both of which I visited on a daytrip from Lindau. The museum is a recreation of Stone Age and Bronze Age village that was at one time located at this location. The settlement was largely built on stilts over the waters of the Bodensee. There are very good tours of the dwellings themselves where the tour guides give excellent demonstrations of Stone Age tools. Unfortunately all of this was done in German but non-German speakers should be able to get the idea of what is going on. It was a beautiful morning during my visit and the whole place was very picturesque. The museum is very popular even though I doubt many foriegn tourist have ever heard of it. Line ups for the tour can be long.The museum is 5.50 Euros for adults.
The pleasant university town of Tübingen is one of Baden Württemberg's most beautiful and rewarding places to visit. Located just 35 km south Stuttgart it's an easy day trip from the capital (45min by train), but during the semester it's worth an overnight stay to check out one of the great student parties.Tübingen's beautiful historical center is along the left bank of the Neckar river, on a hill above town stands Tübingen's castle, which not only offers great views over the whole town, but is also used as a university faculty, now that's a great place to study!!
Quedlinburg, east of the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt is a relatively little known UNESCO World Heritage site with a perfectly preserved medieval center full of gorgeous half-timbered houses and cobbled streets.
The picture you see on the left is a good representation of Jena, home of the world famous Carl Zeiss optical technology.This town in Thuringia has a really weird mix of architectural styles : half-timbered houses stand next to modern shopping malls and dull GDR architecture. It all doesn't look very harmonious, but certainly interesting.
Literally translated the name means Danube breakthrough; this part of the Danube is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe. The Danube runs through a limestone canyon with verdant slopes and white sand beaches. There is no road along the river here, the only way to see it is on foot or even better by boat. There are regular boat trips between Kelheim and Weltenburg Monastery which take about 25min.Donaudurchbruch is located in Bavaria between Regensburg and Ingolstadt.
Schmalkalden is a lovely and well preserved medieval town with half-timbered houses and a nice castle in the beautiful verdant region of the Thuringian Forest.Despite its beauty i had never heard of this town before i visited, so i guess it's really off-the-beaten track.
