Walking around Nuernberg is always a delicious thing to do, you'll be delighted with it's architecture, streets, and also with musicians playing the flute, violin or any other instrument. I saw this guy wearing fancy clothes to accompany the old music he was playing, very nice!!!!!!!..... :o)
The town of Arnsburg has a lovely old centre - it is a climb up to get to it - and the ruins of an old castle where you can get great views of the areas. One great point - there are several coffee shope and ice cafes for a refreshing drink once you come down from the old centre!
The allied forces planned to bomb the dam over the Sorpesee on the same night in May 1943 that they bombed the Mohnesee dam and Edersee dam. They knew this dam would be more difficult to do as it is an earth dijk/dam. It was in fact damaged but did not break. It is a very pleasant walking area.
This is an open-air Industrial and Technical Museum. 60+ traditional buildings have been relocated here. The old industry in this region taps energy from the River Ruhr. The water-wheel, for example, had been used to burn furnaces for the making of iron and steel products like axels, nails, sickles, chains, etc… Here, handymen demonstrate the various kinds of equipment to mould the iron and steel products, perform the art of printing and papermaking, spinning, weaving, cigar-rolling, dyeing, mustard production, etc…The compound is large and there are few sheltered areas, can be HOT and sweaty in summer. As you will take a few hours to walk through, my suggestion : bring your own drinks and lunch.One can buy some of these local crafts and products at the end of this interesting museum.
The countryside is beautiful. Go the the German Alps and Bavaria. Easily my favorite part of my trip to Germany in 1989 was spending time driving and hiking through Bavaria. There are some stunning views and beautiful castles to enjoy.
This 9th century church is often overlooked amongst Regensburg's many interesting sights. Although the exterior is not all that remarkable, the interior which has been restored in the Baroque form, is breathtaking. The tomb that you see in this photo contains the mummified remains of St. Emmeram.
One of the largest medieval castle of Germany, it is very well-restored with some interesting medieval weapons and furniture in various rooms. Worth it to drop by if you are in the neighbourhood. Coal-mining is an old industry in the Ruhr region as well. A striking tower transported from a real coal-mining site sits by the museum. The museum is extremely thorough in the history and evolution of coal-mining equipment. There is even a coal-mine where tourists can descend to take a look. There are drilling machines, explosives, transportation carts, scrapping equipment, etc… In the museum, the evolution of shafts, drilling tools, transportation, etc… are all detailed out. The stalactite and stalagmite cave was discovered during the construction of a rail-line. The formations are about 300 to 350 million years old. All tours are with a guide. As the caves are rather well-lit, on the one hand, it feels less authentic than other cave experiences, but on the other hand, you can see the formations and structures very clearly.
