Great War and WWII history in Bitburg, Germany

by 850prc

The northeastern town of Bitburg contains several military cemetaries, containing the worldly remains of combatants from both World Wars 1 and 2.As a point of history, it's an interesting place to visit. One of the cemetaries (the one I've pictured) is the one that stirred up so much controversy when it was visited by US President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s. People took issue with the inclusion, among the dead at the cemetary, of members of the Waffen SS.I believe that a visit is time well spent. Historically speaking, it's another chance to be closer to and understand the immense nature of the 20th century's two huge conflicts in Europe.

Funky Nassau

by 850prc

Many of you may remember the 1970s hit song "Funky Nassau". Well, they were of course singing about the Nassau in the Bahamas. "Nassau's gone funky, it's got a whole lot of soul". Well, there is a Nassau in Germany, too. It's about 100 km beyond Limburg an der Lahn, if you're moving towards the Bitburg area. I don't know if it's got "a whole lot of soul". And it's probably more friendly than funky. But, if you need an overnight on the road, it's a pretty nice little town. There are a few local sites, and several decent little gasthauses for meeting your feeding needs. But, most of all, I found the residents to be friendly and accomodating. The best story I have involves an evening meal. My son and I got into town pretty late, at a point that eateries were about to close. We found a place that indicating a 10:00 pm closing time. It was about 9:59, and we walked in. I expected to get a cold...

St Gangolf Church in Trier

by Paul2001

There are so many interesting churches and sights that it is easy to overlook this marvelous church. St Gangolf Church was begun in the 15th century and has a largely late Gothic interior. The tower is exceptionally interesting and seems to dominate the Trier skyline. It stands 62m high and towers over the Hauptmarkt.

Air-Balloon Watching

For the first time in my life I could watch a real air balloon rising into the air during my stay in the city of Balingen. Such balloons often fly there with the altitude of up to 1 km. Very breath-taking! I am sorry I didn't experience that - too expensive ( more than 100 Euro!).It was an unforgettable spectacle just to watch it

Alpine beauty near Berchtesgarden/Obersalzburg

by 850prc

Pencil in a little extra time for your next car trip between Salzburg, Austria and Munich. Stop in the Berchtesgarden/Obersalzburg area of southern Germany. Park your car and just go walking. The air is crisp and fresh, the scenery gorgeous, and the relaxation will do you good. Can't remember the name of the small cafe we found in the area, but they had a wonderful plumcake, which topped off our afternoon walk in style.

Nördlingen makes a great day...

by lenoreva

Nördlingen makes a great day trip. Located both on the 'romantic road' and on the edge of a meteorite crater that measures 25 km in diameter, Nördlingen is full of intersting things to do. The town still has many buildings from the middle ages - the historical city walk takes you from atop the outside city walls, past the great cathedral made out of Suevit (a special type of meteor rock in the area), and through many cute alleys. Highlights include: the tower 'Daniel' - climb up 900 steps (just kidding, only 350, but seems like 900!) to reach the top of the cathedral tower and take advantage of great views of the town and surrounding countryside (pictured).

Hackescher Hoefe

by hubertt

Hackescher HoefeThis beautiful set of early 20 century building is often not mentioned in guides. Labirynth of restaurants, backyards, cafes, fountains and halls will show you the most luxourious buildings in Berlin. Have a look and notice the ceramic walls on one of the building. (How to get there? Get off the SBahn on 'Hackescher Markt' station).UPDATE: Lately they added a new entrance and a new "Hof": Rosenhof - it's really beautiful!

Rural Area in Western Germany

by srd130

Once I drove from Munich to Luxembourg using Autobahn #8. Before getting to Luxembourg, there is a rural area between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. Me and my girlfriend at the time got off an exit here to find a hotel. These towns here are very small, it seemed that every few kilometers off the main road there was a village of a few hundred people. We eventually came across a bar/guesthouse just ouside of Pforzheim. The owner was such a nice guy, this place really made me feel like home. I don't remember the exact name but there is about one in each of these villages. If you are in the area, I would suggest getting off the highway, and aimlessly drive around these small towns and stay in a guesthouse. I got to meet really nice laid-back Germans. The people were welcoming too. I was with a Taiwanese girl and they were equally welcoming and kind to her, which some wouldn't expect in a rural...

Lake Müritz

by Weissdorn

Many who have been to Germany before, have seen Lake Constance (Bodensee), but few have see this lake, the second largest lake in Germany, and one of the largest lakes in Europe. Lake Müritz is in the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (former East Germany), and is a 117 square kilometer lake, situated in the middle of a national park between Berlin and Rostock. The lake offers a number of recreational activities, such as watersports, including sailing schools, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and swimming. You can even rent a house boat here, and you don't even need a license for it. They also have horseback riding, hiking, camping, bird watching trips and mushroom gathering trips. There are also 200 km of bike paths for mountain biking, or you can rent bikes from the national park.
