Very famous are the Frank O. Gehry buildings at the Düsseldorf habour. With this buildings the habour area got its first intersting architecual buildings. After that many architects planned innovativ and crazy buildings there - which were discussed very controverse not only by the inhabitants of Düsseldorf. Many creative agencys have there offices in this area and made it a "place to be". Now there are a lot of restaurants and bars where people come to see and to be seen.
An area which not many tourists find is the habour quarter. Close to it you find the Gehry buildings, WDR broadcast, the Norhtrhine-Westfalia Parliament, the "City Gate" in which the city hall has it's place and of course many other architecual interesting buildings. If the weather is fine it's a really nice route for a walk around.You can reach the quarter with walking distance from the Oldtown, with the tram 708 or bus 725 from the main station to Franziusstraße.
Why does everybody go down the Rhine? The Mosel is at least as beautiful if you ask me. Along the river there is vineyards on both sides and you will see castles and beautiful landscapes, too. There are less tourists here and it's a wonderful area. And the wine is to die for ;-)
I found this place by accident almost. I had never heard about it before I moved to Düsseldorf. Zons is a part of Dormagen at the river Rhine, just south of Düsseldorf. It's a very small place but here you feel like somebody dropped you in a different century. Medieval houses and lanes, a windmill, castle walls etc.You can see more pics on my half-finished Dormagen page.
This part of Germany, stretching from Dortmund in the east to the Rhine in the west, is the most industrial part of the whole country. I think it is completely underrated, people just do not go there. It is beautiful though, lots of nature and industrial culture like coalmines or factories. Another big advantage of this area that you drive just for a little while and you are in completely different cities. Cities that belong to this area are Essen, Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and many more.
If you are interested in the German/East German history you have to go to 'Gedenkstätte der Deutschen Teilung' at Helmstedt (at the Motorway A2 between Hannover and Magdeburg at the ex-borderline).It's the ex checkpoint between the Federal Republic of Germany and German Democratic Republic. You can have a look into the building and you can feel a bit what it was like to go through there when Germany was still devided into two parts (which I did a few times so this still makes shivers run down my spine). A really depressing place but a must I think.
Just a few miles out of Osnabrück you will find the area where the Varusschlacht (Varus Battle) between the Romans and the Germans took place in the year 9. In April 2002 an excellent museum was opened here which shows the whole story of the battle in a very exciting and creative way. There's a viewpoint on top of the museum tower and you can walk into the field where the battle took place probably. I'll soon add a travelogue to this page as I was really impressed by the whole place so I have to show you more!!! Play Minigolf. Every place has at least one Minigolf course and as soon as the sun is out we love to play it here in Germany. Prices are 2-4 € for 18 holes, it depends on the condition of the course and where it is.
now and in the past many multi country tours stopped along the rhine because most tours started in england or holland and included italy and switzerland. the lest expensive way and the fastest way to get to italy by land WAS and STILL is to travel down the autobahn that runs near the rhine in germany. better way is south through france and then east to italy.if you miss the rhine it is no great lost . the tour operators build up the stop on and the trip along the rhine becuase they do not want to admit that they are using this route to save money and time. believe me ,i spent a total of eight months traveling europe between 1977 and 1984 and also lived in towns on the rhine for eight months in 1977.
