Hiking!Hiking is for fun. There are lot of superb views and tiny paths for hiking purposes in Bavaria. For daytrippers and beginners the recommendable and most enjoyable routes I have experienced are Kranzberg at Mittenwald and Waldberg at Rottach-Egern. If You have more time than 1 day and are experienced You can try Berchtesgaden and Garmisch-Partenkirchen regions.Buy a book (at Hugendubel in Munich) with road and hiking path maps. Don´t forget to have the right equipment (especially good shoes) and remember to be polite and greet all the wanderers – Grüss Gott!
Neuschwanstein Castle (i think i got it right).This was the most beautiful castle i saw in the country.The only bad thing? The winding uphill walk,which left me gasping for breath. Other wise its totally worth it.
Now, as I´ve mentioned before. Go to the Externsteine if you are into ancient culture, Wicca, Paganism, Druidism, Rainbow Gatherings or similar.You´ll find the Externsteine between Horn and Detmold, aprox. 30 min by car north of Paderborn.
While I’m sure you’ll have a beer in Germany, get to a wine tasting if you can. The ice wine was fabulous! We went in St. Goar and our wine guide looked just like a Beatle except his hair was white. He also could not seem to get his mind of sex so his slips of the tongue and our wine buzzes made for lots of laughter!
Bamberg certainly qualifies as 'Off the Beaten Path' for tourists - although many Americans know it well. There is a US Army base in town, so many soldiers and their families go home to the states with fond memories of this lovely town. I had only heard about Bamberg because a friend of mine was an Army brat and had grown up there. She was always saying how beautiful it was in Bamberg and boy, was she right! The architecture in Bamberg is superb! And sculptures, both modern and ancient are found on nearly every street corner & nook. The city straddles the Regnitz River quite literally: The Altes Rathaus (old city hall) sits right in the middle of it with footbridges connecting it to each bank. Bamberg is known for it's rauchbier (smoked beer), which is an aquired taste. However, I found the smokey flavor went well with the local sausages!
Between Weiden and Tirschenreuth is the small village of Ploessberg. Just a couple of hundred meters outside that village is the lake 'Großer Weiher' with a very nice and clean camping site. The lake is almost completely surrounded by forest, only approximately one fifth of the shore is lawn. The locals say, that the lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany (well, which locals at a lake don´t say that....lol)
Bad Nauheim: this little town near Frankfurt was where Elvis was stationed during his army days, and I remember passing by a small glass-encased lit display on the way to a rave. If you are a die-hard Elvis Presley fan, you should probably go here to 'reenact' his pedophilic seduction of Priscilla, but you might go to jail since the age of consent is probably higher now than it was 50 years ago

I actually haven't been there yet, because every attempt of mine to go gets thwarted by rain. * Dreilander Point - a little spot near Aachen where the borders of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium intersect. There's a concrete post in the ground marking the point, and we walked around it saying: 'If this is Tuesday, this must be Belgium, no Germany, no the Netherlands ... and so on!' And it was Tuesday when I was there! * St Nikolai Church in Hamburg. All that remains of this once beautiful building is the spire and some bricks. It is so sad to see what war can do to such a place. The display in the cellar of its history and what is planned for its future, is both eye-opening and tear-jerking. It moved me to tears.
