Sauerland is a very nice part...

Sauerland is a very nice part of Germany, as you can see in my travelogue. It is great for walking in summer and for skiing in winter, although the snowfall is rather unreliable. As these are the closest mountains (well actually, 'hills' would be the more correct term, I presume, but we call them mountains, anyway) to the Netherlands, there is usually a population exchange in summer: the Dutch coming here to walk around in the mountains, and the Germans going to the Netherlands to sit at the beaches. Apart from hiking there's not really a whole pile that you can do in Hesborn, but it's definitely off the beaten path!!!

Take the S-Bahn to Dachau from the main train station in Munich. It is a sobering experience that no visitor to Germany should miss. Be sure to take your own water if it is warm.For a more uplifting experience, go to Dinkelsbuhl south of Rothenberg. Cute and not nearly as touristy as Rothenberg. A good portion of the original moat is still there.

The International Mill Museum in Gifhorn, just East of Hannover, is a fascinating museum that is comprised of about 6 or 7 huge windmills from all over Europe (with more to come in the future) as well as many many windmill models. Also, just off the grounds, there is an odd Russian Orthodox church. Check the place out if you're in the area!

The Lüneburger Heide, or Luneburg Heath, is a beautiful area just South of Hamburg, which has been immortalized in the folksong, 'Auf der Lüneburger Heide.' There are many trails you can hike down, and if you are staying in Hamburg, you may want to explore this place.The Panzermuseum (Tank Museum) in Munster is way off the beaten track, but is a quite interesting museum with a huge collection of military equipment and paraphernalia.The Bahnhof, or Rail Station, in Uelzen was designed by Hundertwasser. At the time I visited it, there was also an exhibition of Hundertwasser prints.

The Sauerland:A hilly area about 100km east of Cologne and unfortuanately completly missed but many travellers, especially from overseas. Summer is great for walking, hiking, biking or watersports at numerous lakes. Their are great centers like Cologne or the busy sprawl of the Ruhrgebiet very near, but it's rural life and great scenery what it's all about here. A quieter part of Germany where you get the chance of seeing the country without running into thousands of other tourists.The picture shows the Oester Lake in my hometown. Good swimming spot, though the 'beach' is a bit steep an stony.
