Visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber during their Medieval Festival. Imperial City Festival, three days in which historical groups meet to re-enact events extending over seven centuries. During this event, shepherds dance to demonstrate their joy for the end of the plague. Rothenburg is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Germany. The old city walls are still standing and you can actually walk around part of the city on the city wall's walkway. There are wonderful museums like the Kriminalmuseum, where medieval torture instruments are displayed.

On June 12th my wife and I took a comfortable Lufthansa jet to Berlin (Tegel airport) where we picked up a car we had reserved from Avis, though the car had been reserved through Auto Europe. We were supposed to have an Audi A4, but we got an Opel Vectra which was satisfactory, but did not feel safe being driven above 130kph (85mph). We had made most of our reservations over the Internet before going and this is something I would recommend. Just put the name of the town in a good search engine (I used Hotbot) and you should find the information you need. We reserved a place in Quedlinburg [pictured on the front page and at Schmiedehausen, Damm 16, telephone 03946/4344], Wittenberg (Pension Sternstadtchen, Rooseveltstrasse 10/11, telephone 03491/4201) and Lubbenau in the 'Spreewald' (Pension Am Stadtgraben, Bergstrasse 9, telephone 03542/3532). Before we left Germany to return home, we...

Not only was Berlin divided, but East Germany and West Germany were divided by a wall as well. By enlarging this picture, it is possible to see the wall as it makes its way through the German countryside, just this side of a village which is located in East Germany.

If you have some extra free time, I would recommand you to go to a really sympatic castle in Thüringen: Die Runneburg in Weißensee! (north of Erfurt) I've worked and lived there for a month and it was just fantastic! The castle, the exibitions and the catapult(still working!) are quiet impressive...[this is a part of the kitchen...]http://www.runneburg.de/

Between Duisburg and Dortmund seems to be a white spot for most visitors going to the Rhineland. In the so called ruhrgebiet once beat the industrial heart of Germany. You can still see the characteristic towers of the coalmines and the outlines of steelworks. However, the structural changes have left huge marks, lots of unemployment as well. On the other hand, the former industrial sites are turning into museums of industrial history or the scenes of theatre, jazz and modern dance.
The Rhön mountains between Hessia and Bavaria remind me a bit to the bieszczady mountains in poland. They are not mountains, rather big hills with dense woods and big seas of grass on the tops. I recommend a hike to the Kreuzberg - at the summit there is a monastery of Franciscan monks who provide shelter and food. They have a brewery as well and their beer is excellent, especially if you arrive slightliy panting after some hours of hiking on a hot summer day
Okay, Rothenburg is nice. But it´s by far not the only romantic little town. If you are in the area, why don´t you see the towns in Franconia, like Würzburg, Nürnberg, Bamberg etc. not all of them have maintained their complete historical face due to war destructions, but you´ll find the works of famous sculpturs like Veit Stoss (by the way, he also created the famous altar in St. Mary´s church in Cracow) or Tilman Riemenschneider, or the pictures of Albrecht Durer. And in September or October you might visit some 'weinfest' along the villages of the Main when the new wine has been harvested. The young wine is called Federweisser (be careful, its sour and you feel very bad if you have too much of it!!) and the traditional side dish is onion cake (Zwiebelkuchen or, as locals say, Zwiebelblootz). The wine in this area is very dry and has a characteristic 'earthy' flavor
Sometimes I get the impression that most of Germany aside from Heidelberg, Rothenburg at the Tauber, Neuschwanstein castle, Blackforest and Rhine are off the beaten track for most tourists. at least for those who booked some package tour of scenic Germany....
This Krankenhaus (hospital) was a welcomed sight. We found it in a small town along the Rhine River. My dad spent the night there and checked out the following morning. They provided us with an English speaking doctor and took good care. Did I say that she was a very attractive tall blonde? Well, she was!
